I find it very interesting.

Years ago, during McCain's 100% pro-life days, he was asked what he'd do if his 15 year-old daughter came home pregnant. His reply: "That would be a family decision" which would indicate to me that even if you're pro-life, abortion is still an option if it's your own daughter.

As I have pointed out many times, hypocrisy is one of the conerstones of conservative ideology.

Years ago, during McCain's 100% pro-life days, he was asked what he'd do if his 15 year-old daughter came home pregnant. His reply: "That would be a family decision" which would indicate to me that even if you're pro-life, abortion is still an option if it's your own daughter.

As I have pointed out many times, hypocrisy is one of the conerstones of conservative ideology.

Dan Quayle said something very similar in 1992.

"I would counsel her and talk to her and support her on whatever decision she made."

Oh, the horror. After the party slapped him down a bit he changed the stance to declare she would indeed have the child.

Seriously, I'm hard pressed to see how the 17 year old daughter getting pregnant has any political effect. That's what 17 year old daughters do. I can't imagine a single past or present mother of teenagers who isn't thinking, "There but for the grace of God . . ." This is a sympathy thing, isn't it? Not quite in the same league as a Downs baby, but sympathy nevertheless.

And you're missing the point, perhaps on purpose.

None of us are blaming the daughter or even Palin (well, with the exception of JBJ, of course).

But we are indeed enjoying the hypocritical conservative right furiously wriggling as they try to figure out the best positive spin to put on this situation.

They've been slamming unwed mothers for years. It's the fault of a non-Christian home, isn't it? Or it's because of sex education in schools. Or divorce. Or it's due to the permissive lifestyle, to mothers working outside the home, to the fact that abortion is still legal, you name it.

It is somehow the fault of liberals, or has been, for years.

But they can't pin this one on liberals, no matter how hard they try.

I've always despised the expression "getting [one]self pregnant. Your average 17YO girl, if it was something that you could accomplish without the input from someone else, believe me, no one would do it.

And the one teenage girl who DID get pregnant without human input, didn't really have any choice in the matter; she was told, You WILL do this.

Others have noted how it will spin. In addition, McCain will have answer whether he knew in advance, which he will say he did, and why he didn't think it a deal breaker in the conservative right context.

And if he didn't, even if because she just told mommy on Saturday, it will greatly undermine trust in his ability to have a handle on what's what. Though that can be mitigated to some extent by how he handles things.
