Sarah Palin

AMICUS

The local paper is in angst about Ms. Palin. Historically they never bother to mention the VP candidate, so their Op-Ed Global Whining tells me the Palin surprise was a swift kick in the balls. They were expecting an old GOP hack or Lieberman. With Palin, Bambi's game-plan exploded in his face....certainly his coronation speech is now forgotten.

Where is all the shreads of evidence where Obama is so great. Not the stump speeches and rhedoric he talks, but the evidence on how he's going to help America first. I know the negatives and I don't like it. I have yet to see the good things he has done.

I saw where he took the American Flag off his Planes tail wing. I didn't like it
We all know he doesn't wear a flag lapel pin. Didn't want to upset who?
Puts hand on heart sometimes when saying the pledge of alligence. He said so himself. Why not all the time?

To me these are not small things if you want to be the leader of our country. I believe if any American should show patriotism, it should be our President and Congress and house of Reps.

To some of you this doesn't mean shit. To me it means alot and I hope it does to others who want a President who is proud of our country and our flag.

Enough said. back to the humor thread.

It's nice to hear someone mention the important parts. :D

By the almost hysterical reaction of the Obama side I wonder who is really desperate?

The trump card has been played and the Dems are very worried, as they should be.

I'm not hearing any hysterics from anyone, gents. :)

I'm pleased with the choice.

At heart, this country is more sexist than racist.

It's one of the reasons I couldn't go with Hillary - no matter what her politics, I never felt she'd never actually be elected because of too many sexist good ol' boys out there (from both parties).

Ami is quite clear on what he feels the duties of the "fairer sex" should be.

And a woman being his president certainly isn't one of them. ;)

I think that liability, the possibility of her becoming president soon due to McCain's age, will prevent many of the GOP from voting for her. I don't believe they'll switch parties, they just won't vote at all.

And their belief that Clinton fans will automatically switch over just because she's a woman is ludicrous, although it's apparent that was part of the thought processes behind choosing Palin.

So I'm just fine. I'm calm, I'm smiling. Perhaps even grinning.

No hysterics at all.

:rose:

Rox, I've read this several times and I still don't understand what you are trying to say.

I don't think 80% share any position other than maybe that Bush is doing a lousy job. As for the rest of it, I can't figure out what you are trying to say.

Actually, I think that at least 80% think that Congress is doing a lousy job. W is not approved of either, but not by such a a big margin.

Sarahh, that won't keep anyone in the GOP from voting. You will see fewer hardline Clinton supporters at the polls before you see fewer conservatives.

Personally I hope we see more than a 50% turnout for a change

I would love to see everyone get off their asses and vote.

But there has been a huge surge in voter registration, especially among younger voters.

This will be good.

:)

A woman's worst enemy is always other women. You can persuade a man to vote for anything or anybody, but women are never deceived by men, and especially never by women.

Kids never vote. The registration is bullshit; its one thing to stop at the dorm entrance and sign-up, and a horrible inconvenience to wait in line to vote. Kids dont wait in line.

And what right thinking sister wouldn't do the same for her sister, if she had it in her power?

From what I've heard of her, she is a very admirable and likeable person. I just don't want her where she might be in a position to choose the supremes that'll limit the rights of my daughter and my granddaughters, should I ever have any, to make their own reproductive choices.

Oh, and DG?

How many of them were force to hear religon in school?

Me me me!

I'm a tad older than a lot of the people here and I remember: hell yes, we got religion in school. I didn't mind getting Bible stories in the reading part of grammar school, but I sure as hell resented having to stand up and mouth along with the "devotional" we had to go through before we could file out for lunch. Now it just happens that if I go to a dinner meeting with my church circle, we say grace at the table, but that's voluntary and these people are my friends. I don't think kids should be forced to go along with a formulaic prayer in school any more than they should be forced to do so at work.

i agree

with sarah.

no cause for alarm. the dems just need to mind their manners, and the almost miss alaska will implode .... or be irrelevant.

i agree this is a 'hail mary' pass by mc cain. an attempt at invoking change and making the ticket look 'maverick.' it aint.

i think, overall, i'm pleased, since the rep'n strategists are obviously very desperate. they've sidelined romney and appear to have given up on centrists and independents. it's straight karl rove. pull the busses up to the churches and drive the congregation to the polls to vote for 'values.' (this occurred in some cases.)

it's possible mccain is still a bit maverick and is just kissing falwell's ass to get elected. who knows. otoh, when you make deals with the devil, it can haunt you. for example, he couldn't pick lieberman. suppose a supreme ct vacancy arose, could he pick a centrist or maverick, *having made his pledges to the far right*?

the Repug platform says NO choice for women, even after rape. if mccain has pledged his soul to that, his govt would not be maverick at all, rather, theocratic.

Naw, I dont think Palin is enough to sell conservatives on McCain. I like Palin, but Johnny is still too greasy for me.

All three of these things have been proven to be complete and total fabrications. Check with an independent source please.

*sigh*

Look, if you have legitimate reasons to go against Obama, great. You could be pro-life. You could be someone who honestly believes that his inexperience is an issue. (but if you do, you need to wonder about Palin.) There could be any number of disagreements you could have with the true things about him.

But PLEASE quit repeating this falsified bullshit. You are enabling the fucking hatemongers.

1. Rox's claim that Palin has an 80% approval rating because she's in favor of limited government is total BS. Palin's 80% approval rating is based on her looks and her personality.

2. The fact that Obama graduated law school (and was president of the Law Review while he was there) but then, instead of taking a cushy corporate job, went back to Chicago to work with the poor makes him more qualified than most of the yahoos in Washington. Plus, he's incredibly smart.

3. In the big scheme of things, #1 will pull more weight than #2 (thanks to Fox News, and people like DG, who buy into Right Wing propaganda hook, line and sinker.)

Ain't our country great? We're a democracy ruled by ignorance and fear. But at least we're Free!

DEEZIRE

Anyone can get a law diploma. Lotsa stupid people are lawyers.

I dont know why it is that people think a law diploma qualifies you to do anything other than chase ambulances. Lawyers cant repair cars, or unstop toilets, or mend broken bones, but we act like a law degree is good for just about anything.

I don't know who you are but I'm not big on being called a liar.! I did check my so-called sources. I went to snoops and they explained each one of these as true with the pictures and text. It's a remodeled American Airline plane with the American flag on both side of the tailgate. He had them removed and replace with his insignia.

The lapel pin, is also true. Go look it up yourself since you think you have all the answers.

That's also why I also said he doesn't aways put his hand over his heart. It's his quote, not mine.

As I said in my quote; These are little things to some people but they mean a lot to me. You can kiss his ass and do what you want with him. Put his picture on your wall and say what a great man he is and say your prayers to him each day. I've received a lot of info about hime that I don't pass along.

Think about his 57 state error. You probably jumped on Dan Quale for mis-spelling potato.

"Every year from 1999 to 2005 the organization of the Islamic conference, representing the 57 Islamic states, presented a resolution to the United Nations Commission on human rights called 'combating'." (What 57 islamic states!!! Interesting)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organisation_of_the_Islamic_Conference

Barack Obama also made the statement with pride. . ."we are no longer a
Christian nation; we are now a nation of Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, . . . "

So you're probably not a christian and probably don't care. But for those of us who us who are, it might mean something.

Hell, even his wife said she didn't like America till he ran for office.

We'll all get the same Health care as the senate. People really believe this? At what cost if it was even possible.

I've said all I'm going to say about him. If he wins he will be like your fairy GodMother and grant all your wishes. Me? I'll just get older and shake my head wondering how much worse can it get before I die.

I won't argue your facts, DG. You'll notice I didn't attempt to argue the last time you posted information from a site most people realize is seriously slanted in their approach to the truth.

But here are the selections from Snopes you boasted about. You'd better do a bit of reading, since they paint you misinformed again.

Did you go to Snopes . com or somewhere else?

About Obama saying pledge - http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/muslim.asp

About Obama's church being Muslim - http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/church.asp

About someone claiming Revelations describing Obama as the antichrist - http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/antichrist.asp

The email about Obama's 50 Lies - all proven as false - http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/50lies.asp

The reference to Obama saying 57 states - http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/57states.asp

The reference to Obama not having his hand over his heart - there are photos of him with his hand over his heart, and one where he did not - for heaven's sake this is silly! http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/anthem.asp

The lapel pin? Here is a false email circulating pretending to be Obama - http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/stance.asp

I don't give two hoots if someone wears a lapel pin with a flag. I don't own one, neither does my dad or my father in law and both are veterans. My father in law has a purple heart, for heaven's sake, and he doesn't wear a lapel pin. What on earth should that matter? Are you telling me my father isn't a patriot? That my dad in law lost his foot in battle but his opinion and loyalty to the flag mean nothing because he doesn't wear a lapel pin?

That's political nonsense, DG.

In this country we have the right to choose to display our patriotism in different ways. We have. That is America. Freedom.

And as to the point about being Christian. Does it matter if someone isn't Christian? I mean really?

Obama has sworn time and time again that he is not Muslim. (And Snopes does back him up on this.) All these "rumors" that have been sent about in emails - I wonder by whom? - have been proven false.

But even if he were Muslim, why would that matter?

Only Christians should be allowed in this country? Only Christians are important?

And which specific Christian faith is the true one? They all seem to interpret the Bible differently.

America was founded on the very idea that our religions should be private. We shouldn't be forced to alter our beliefs to suit another. We should be allowed to practice our beliefs without duress.

I am so tired of fear being touted as fact. You'd better watch out what happens if this person is elected!

You know what? I'm afraid now because of who was already elected. We're in a mess and it's getting worse.

That's true fear. And it has nothing to do with whether or not he wears a lapel pin.

It's amazing to me how people get worked up over this lapel pin business. If Barack doesn't wear a flag pin all the time, it's probably for the same reason most people don't bother with them: you're always forgetting to take it off, and then it goes through the wash, and when you do take it off, there's a little hole in the fabric of your shirt that you hope you can massage out.

The lapel pins and airplane flags, etc. are symbols of something real, so it doesn't really matter if the details of the stories about them are ambiguous. The thing that's real is a growing gap between the attitude of elites and masses on patriotism and nationalistic identification with their country. It was described in a Michael Barone column that I pasted into a post here. Some excerpts:

. . . But not all of us cherish ties to past traditions. "America's business, professional, intellectual, and academic elites," writes Samuel Huntington in his 2004 book Who Are We? have "attitudes and behavior [that] contrast with the overwhelming patriotism and nationalistic identification with their country of the American public. . . . They abandon commitment to their nation and their fellow citizens and argue the moral superiority of identifying with humanity at large." He believes that this gap between transnational elites and the patriotic public is growing. Huntington knows whereof he speaks: He's been at Harvard for more than half a century.

This gap is something new in our history. Franklin Roosevelt spoke fluent French and German and worked to create the United Nations, but no one doubted that his allegiance was to America above all. Most Harvard professors in the 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s felt a responsibility to help the United States prevail against its totalitarian enemies. But in the later stages of the Vietnam War--a war begun by elite liberals--elites on campuses began taking an adversary posture toward their own country. Later, with globalization, a transnational mind-set grew among corporate and professional elites. Legal elites, too: Some Supreme Court justices have taken to citing foreign law as one basis for interpreting the U.S. Constitution.

This gap between transnational elites and the patriotic public has reverberations in partisan politics. Americans in military service and those with strong religious beliefs now vote heavily Republican. Americans with strong patriotic feelings are more closely split between the parties, but the growing minority with transnational attitudes vote heavily Democratic . . .

"A nation's morale and strength derive from a sense of the past," argues historian Wilfred McClay. Ties to those who came before--whether in the military, in religion, in general patriotism--provide a sense of purpose rooted in history and tested over time. Secular transnational elites are on their own, without a useful tradition, in constructing a morality to help them perform their duties. Most Americans sense they need such ties to the past, to judge from the millions buying books about Washington, Adams, Hamilton, Jefferson, and other Founding Fathers. We Americans are lucky to live in a country with a history full of noble ideas, great leaders, and awe-inspiring accomplishments. Sadly, many of our elites want no part of it.

Just to connect the dots, many people believe that Obama's on what they view as the wrong side of that divide. I suspect they're correct.

I call bullshit, Rox.

I'll let you talk to my dad. He is a staunch Republican, a Lion's Club member, puts out flags for every holiday and attends funerals for fellow vets, plans to vote for McCain and he is confused about all of the nonsense about a lapel pin.

Patriotism is inside yourself, he told me once. It is part of who you are.

If you have to broadcast it for everyone else to see, then it isn't real.

Perhaps, but it has little bearing on the phenomenon described by Barone, or on many people's perception regarding which side of that internationalis/nationalist divide Obama stands.

In countless ways both implicit and explicit "the left" has created this divide and established which side they're on; Obama is of the left and so the burden is on him to demonstrate that he's not on that "wrong" side. He's given mixed signals, which for many people just confirms a presumption that now comes with his political identity as an extreme liberal. It's not just flag pins - sitting in that church for 20 years doesn't help, to name another item.

Christ.

How much of this dividing nonsense is real and how much has been made up by journalists or writers looking for a sensationalistic story?

Kind of like the excitement about riots at Denver, which turned out only to be overzealous reporters hoping for something to happen.

I still call Bullshit.

Enough, already. Stop the nonsense.

If you don't wish to be part of the solution, fine. At least stop continuing to promote the problem.

You mean Karl Rove and his gang are all really leftists? Wow, who knew?

The ploy's not working as well as it used to.

Actually the right in the States has been working on this divide for thirty years.

The book Holy Terror outlines their communications strategies.

The worst example in the book was a trick pulled against Birch Bayh. A person running against him received money from the New Conservative Political Action Committee for a TV commercial. In it the candidate was standing next to a missile silo and claimed it held no missile because Bayh had voted against budget appropriations for it. And that America was less safe because of it.

It wasn't true. Bayh had voted for the appropriations. The silo was empty because the missile that had been in it was obsolete and wasn't big enough to hold a newer one. The Air Force made the decision to empty the silo.

Bayh demanded a retraction and he got it. On page 74 of the newspapers under the tide schedule.

So a lot of people saw the ad. Very few saw the retraction.

As I said, this sort of shit has been going on for thirty years. I'm not surprised by it anymore.

I'm not surprised by it, but I am offended that some people continue to promote it, even when they know it to be false.

Scratch that. Especially when they know it to be false, but are hoping to snag a few more less-than-informed to add to their fear mongering Shopping Cart.

Enough already.

I have a sick son who needs pancakes. Be back soon.

With respect Sarahh I wish you would talk to your dad a little more. I'm not a staunch republican but I did belong to the Lion's club, 32nd degree Mason, owned my own business, belonged to at least four different unions and even something as small as the lapel pin has meaning.

I asked a number of people for something other than rhetoric on Obama. Something positive other than his chrisma to counter act what I call the lack of patriotism. I keep hearing words as he speaks about Abortion, gay rights, same health insurance as the senate. Again Sarah, just words. Look at his past accomplishments and tell me which ones you feel make him the candidate to lead this country.

I agree with Rox, that he's on the oppisite side of the divide on even those issues for me. I've been around a long time and watching our country slowly going down the tubes. With Obama, I think we will be making a major error. Can I prove it? Of course not.

I feel for my kids and grandkids. I will close by saying this is my last post on any political thread. I never should have started but whatever happens, happens.

I still believe in God Bless America. I also believe we show it with our actions, flag waving, lapel pins and all. I guess I'm one of the select few who still believe in it.
With respect
