The Clinic ~ Ask me anything, I'm a nurse.

Great thread FM! Enjoy reading and getting a little knowledge never hurts.

It's that time of year for the cold and flu season. What is your recommendation on how to "cure" the common cold?

Do you have any suggestions on over the counter product for relieving the symptoms for the flu?

Thanks! :)

Flu is caused by a virus and really, no over the counter product is going to do much to prevent flu running its course. One of the biggest impediments to swift recovery is vitamin deficiency though, so make sure you have a good diet or take a multivitamin and mineral supplement. When flu hits, get some high strength Vit C in addition to over the counter remedies.

If you're in an at risk group such as...
  • 65 or older
  • sufferer of asthma, emphysema, COPD or similar
  • Have a chronic heart disease, angina, heart failure or if you have ever had a heart attack
  • Have a chronic kidney disease such as nephrotic syndrome, kidney failure or a kidney transplant
  • Have a serious liver disease
  • Have diabetes and are taking either insulin or tablets for it
  • Have a compromised immune system, HIV/AIDs or have had your spleen removed
  • Have certain serious diseases of the nervous system such as multiple sclerosis
  • Live in a nursing home or other long stay residential care accommodation
  • If you work with poultry, are a healthcare professional or a carer for a vulnerable person who relies upon your wellbeing

You should be eligible for a vaccine against the most prevalent strain of flu. Flu viruses constantly mutate, which is why we never develop immunity to them. You should not have the vaccine if you're allergic to eggs (it's developed in hens' eggs).

On average, we do anal about 1-2 each week. Our dildos are 2 1/2" wide at their widest point. Much larger than the average width stool. We can only take 6-7", or about 3/4 the length of the shaft. Picture of dildo is here.

We do not experience the symptoms you mentioned. Dose the size of this dildo cause you to modify your advice?

Wow, that's big.

I don't know. If you're sensible, starting slower and smaller and using lots of silicone lube once a week should be ok. I'm just guessing here though, I don't have anything empirical to base that guess on. Gay guys manage to have healthy sex lives without wearing nappies. Perhaps you should ask this on the GLBT forum, they may have more constructive advice?

In all honesty poppet, I have no idea. I've worked on a urology ward so I've seen a lot of cock in my career and as far as I can tell, a person's height is no indication of penis size. And besides, if you're 8 in already you want to be careful what you wish for as a very large cock can hurt women (assuming you swing that way) and limit what you get up to in the sack.

Thanks. I always thought it was bigger is better? If what you're saying is true, am I at a good size now or am I getting too big? And yes I swing that way lol.

You're a good size. Now stop fishing for compliments.

Any precautions when it comes to sex on her period?

Not really. Putting a towel underneath her should be precaution enough. Obviously if she gets emotional on her period you'll have to watch out for that. As a masochist I know my pain thresholds are different at different times during my cycle but that's about all I can think of.

And yes, women can get pregnant at any time during their cycle. There are no 'safe sex' days.

Hi Fuckmeat!

I have a question. I went in for a fitting model job yesterday, and was told that, while my "numbers" were good, she couldn't send me to any clients with my bad posture, and that I could come back once I've remedied it.

Correcting my posture is something that I can do, but I have another problem from years of carrying weight/bags/purses on one side, and from standing/sitting strangely. The entire right side of my body "hangs" about an inch lower than the other side. The woman that was interviewing/measuring me seemed to mostly be concerned with my hips being misaligned, but I know my right shoulder droops as well.

So I was looking up ways to fix my hip bones, and came across this: http://www.theherbdoc.com/consumerEducation/Techniques/HipAlignment.htm

Do you think doing that exercise for a few days will help fix my misalignment? And if I do it maybe once a week (in addition to standing and sitting straighter) or something, will it help me from having it develop again?

Thanks! :D

Hi! I have a question:
So recently i have been having a lot of pain during sex when my BF bumps my cervix - it is so bad that we can't even have sex with me on my back any more because it is a bad angle. I am getting concerned so i used my fingers to just probe around my cervix; i can reach it if i am in the correct position. It feels more protruded and larger than normal to me and i can sort of simulate the pain i get during intercourse if i press on the center of it.

I knew i should get myself to a obgyn stat so today i made an appointment and they took me in this morning. The lady who saw me seemed to think that i was just bumping it and that i should stop fucking so much basically. My problem is that my sexual patterns haven't changed in like 5 years! - we fuck everyday at least once so i don't think it is too much sex that has caused this change. I did a pregnancy test and it was negative and i have had the same partner for 5 years monogamously so it doesn't make sense that it would be an std. I am just really worried now - or should i just take the doctors advice and stop thinking about it. The lady also seemed really shocked that i would do something like touch my own cervix - she told me to stop doing it and that she had never heard of anyone doing this to themselves before. I don't think i am that abnormal for doing this! she made me feel like a mental case! - i always thought it was good to be as familiar with myself as possible, that way i would know if there was a change like this. Just wondering what your advice is? thanks!

WTF? As long as your hands are clean, there's nothing wrong with touching your cervix! In fact, women who practice natural family planning do it all the time because it can help pinpoint where we are in our cycles.

You are so NOT a mental case, and you're absolutely right to both be familiar with your body and get this checked out. I know you asked fuckmeat, but I'd suggest getting a second opinion from someone who has more awareness overall. You'll come out a winner either way: you'll either get peace of mind or be properly diagnosed.

Did this lady run a full STD panel, pregnancy test and PAP smear on you, or did she just do the exam and conclude it was normal?

Hi SweetErika, thanks for your reply. She is running a chlamydia and gonorrhea test but she did not do a pap smear. She said she didn't think she need to because my last full check up was less than a year ago in January and i had a pap smear done then and it came back normal. She also did not do a pregnancy test although i am 99% sure i am not pregnant because i took a home test myself two weeks ago and this problem began before then. I told her what i thought was different, that to me my cervix felt more protruding and hard than usual and she did take a look but said that it looks fine to her. I just feel like she isn't taking me seriously. This pain has been getting more and more intrusive into my sex life and today it was too bad to pass off as not a problem anymore so i decided go in for a check up. Something is definitely different.

One thing that i did think of later is that i went off of hormonal birth control a little bit before this started happening. Perhaps it has something to do with that.

I was really surprised by what she said when i told her i had felt around my cervix. I had thought that someone who deals with other peoples cervix's all the time she wouldn't think it was so weird that i would be familiar with my own. I am glad you agree about that - it makes me feel better :) I do think you are right that it might help to get a second opinion. I just wish i knew which obgyn's would be more helpful. The woman said to come back in 2 weeks to check up with her but i almost don't want to after the way she made me feel.

Cervical Pain

The hormonal birth control does affect the tissue of the cervix and the uterus as well. A recent change in stopping your birth control may have caused the changes you are noticing. I think you should probably seek alternate medical care, because checking your cervix and vagina regularly for growths/changes is something that should be done along with regular breast exams. A yearly pap smear is fine for detecting cervical cancer, but rapid growing cancers and polyps or other neoplasms can be treated more effectively when caught early, and the best person to detect abnormalities during the year-long intervals is yourself. Painful intercourse is not something to be taken lightly and should be examined. If you don't get a satisfactory resolution, then by all means you have the right as a patient to request a referral to another physician/specialist.
I hope that you have a speedy recovery.

But we're not supposed to mention that, right?

Thanks for the reply though.

Couldn't have put it better myself. :)

Hi KoPilot

I know nothing about this but a friend of mine is in her fourth and final year to train as an Osteopath. She says that lots of women have this problem and in the UK there was a class action law suit filed by postal workers some years ago, because they had been supplied with bags that hung from one shoulder and lots of back injury had resulted after years of use.

To put it simply, your hips are misaligned because your shoulders are. Treating one issue and not the other won't therefore make much difference to you. My friend recommends seeing an osteopath and says that if cost is an issue, you should look for a clinic in your area staffed by (supervised) final year students.

I don't see how the technique you linked would make a huge difference and the link on the page that should go to the disclaimer is broken, which I find a bit dubious.

When you first see a practitioner like an osteopath or chiropractor, you'll need a few appointments in order to work on your problem. In 6-12 months though, you should no longer need to resolve the misalignment, giving you the choice whether to continue going at all or not.

Taking up something like yoga or pilates and telling your instructor about your misalignment could also be effective.

As far as prevention goes, have a good look inside your handbag and ask yourself what you actually need to carry around. Many items can be left at work or home. Get yourself a bag that you carry on your back with two shoulder straps. Think about your posture as you move around. Writing and using a computer mouse for hours a day can also cause misalignment if your sitting posture is poor. Take into consideration that if you're right handed, your right arm and shoulder will have more muscletone. If you always cross your legs when you sit, this can also cause hip misalignment. If you have a small child that you sit on one of your hips, that needs addressing too. Think your way through an average day and try to identify times and activities when you may not be helping yourself.

A good, reputable chiropractor combined with symmetrical excercise will do wonders. Just be patient, the longer you have been misaligned, the longer it will take to correct- likely months. Don't be suprised is other physical changes occur during the course of treatment- I have had spinal misalignment cause unbearable heartburn ( due to nerve pinching)- a problem that plagued me for years; cured in one simple spinal adjustment. Do provide your doctor with every piece of information they ask for- and any more you feel like telling! I could have been over the heartburn years before- just never mentioned it because it didn't seem relevant ( I had been recieving lower back and neck adjustments; the heartburn was a mid-back problem) to chiropractic care. Many people doubt chiro, but I'm evidence enough- I would have been done working at 25 if not for chiro. I feel ( and stand, and walk) better at 35 than at 20- with no surgery or meds. Oh, and a good chiro won't touch you without a thorough intro exam and x-rays- to pinpoint your problems and check for bone problems. Even though I've gone for years, mine won't tackle anything new on me without doing the x-rays ( to see what I've done to myself).

Thanks for the advice! I was talking to my mother about this problem a bit the other day, and asked her if she thought seeing a chiro would be one way to handle it. In years past I've had a lot of knee problems (you guessed it, right side), and I know that since then I've always subconsciously over-compensated for the weak joint. (My patella is loose as hell on that side after slipping out 3 times.) So part of my problem might also be in my reluctance to evenly distribute my weight, or switch between both legs when standing for long periods of time. When I talked to my mother about this, she'd reminded me that my physical therapist had advised against me using a chiro for a reason that I can't for the life of me remember right now.

But anyways, thanks again. I'll see if I can start seeing a good yoga instructor that can help me here, and just start carrying my bags on the other shoulder. Unfortunately, I live in NYC, so playing the part of pack mule happens all the time, and I can't always afford a cab when I'm carrying more than 20 lbs. Also, I used to wear backpacks, but they seemed to be worse for my posture! For some reason, they would hurt my back more than a messenger bag, and it was difficult for me to not hunch over when wearing them. I suppose I'll just have to switch my load bearing shoulder for now..?

thank you shewolf3003, that is what i suspected but i didn't find anything on google about it when i looked. I did find information about thickening of the mucus however. I am going to make another appointment elsewhere as soon as i can.

Mainstream health professionals are quite often against chiro, as often they don't understand how thoroughly spinal alignment issues can influence your well-being. And, yes- limping or favoring definitely affects you negatively. Often, meds are prescribed ( muscle relaxants, anti- inflammatories, etc) to combat muscular spasms and swelling- but these never fix the root problem. I'm not anti- medicine, just someone who ( due to my job) has had plenty of accidents, slips, strains, and repetitive motion injuries. I visited my D.O once for one of these injuries. ( a well respected one, with a sports injury rehab specialty) No x-ray, no range of motion tests, no muscle strength test- just a prescription for a now banned, liver killing anti inflammatory. My shoulder was dislocated, my acrominion shifted, and rotator muscles badly injured ( from a slip & slide injury, and yes- there was alcohol:D) My chiro reset my shoulder repeatedly and gradually ( to let fluid get out of the way) and helped me rehab to full strength. My sister-in-law is a state licensed pt, and doesn't like to acknowledge the merits of my chiro routine ( never mind we're the same age and I have better flexibility than she?).There is conflict between the professions, and there should not be. It should go hand in hand- but too many doctors won't recognize that alignment is prerequisite to rehab. ( at least here)

I have a sort of off the wall question. What affects the time for flowback to happen.

My husband and I like to engage in creampies. Sometimes he'll fuck me and within less than a minute his cum is flowing back out of me. Other times it's MIA. I first thought maybe it was positions - but once when he came with me on top it came back immediately and the next time I didn't get a return until the next morning.

Is this me hanging on to it or him having different semen? I doubt there is a lot of medical information on this, but I'll ask anyway.

I'm very sorry but I have no clue. Someone else may yet pitch in with an insight though.

If you get your balls tweaked or generally treated roughly, why does it feel like you've got punched in the kidneys?
I suspect the answer is "reffered pain" but what are he mechanisms that cause it?

I had mild food poisoning about a week ago - stomach pain, had to go to the bathroom a lot, spat a small amount of blood, finally puked then felt mostly better. Since then I've felt fine except every time I finish eating a meal I get a stomach ache for about two hours. Will this go away if I just wait, or is something still wrong with me? :(

The pain associated with testicular trauma travels from the testicles into the abdominal cavity through the spermatic plexus, the primary nerve of the testicles. The spermatic plexus is connected to the renal plexus, which is why you feel like you have been punched in the kidneys.

It may be that your stomach isn't ready for large meals yet, so eating little and often instead of three large meals a day may help.

Lactose intolerance can sometimes occur for a period of time after food poisoning. This is known as 'secondary' or 'acquired' lactose intolerance. Your gut lining can be damaged by an episode of gut infection. This leads to lack of an enzyme (chemical) called lactase that is needed to help your body digest a sugar called lactose that is in milk. Lactose intolerance leads to bloating, abdominal pain, wind and watery stools after consuming dairy products. The condition gets better when the infection is over and the gut lining heals.

If you have been taking anti-diarrhoea medication like Loperamide, it's possible you've been overzealous and caused constipation. Using anti-diarrhoea medications can also interfere with the body's need to purge the contaminated food, so if you still have anything toxic in your system it'll cause you problems, especially when you put more food into your system before it's been cleared out. If you have been left dehydrated, that can slow down the natural movement of food within the gut, causing a backlog to develop once you start eating again.

In rare cases, IBS can be triggered by food poisoning.

Muscles can be strained during a bout of food poisoning, through vomiting and excreting waste very frequently.

Only you know how severe and concerning this pain is. If it's worrying you, you should go and see your doctor. It concerns me a little that you spat blood. It could be that you have an ulcer that has ruptured or something else has caused bleeding in your gut. That kind of thing can get serious in time if left uninvestigated, so I'd err on the side of caution if I were you.

Thank you for the information. :) I'm lactose intolerant anyway, so I don't usually eat a lot of dairy products, and did not notice the symptoms I usually get if I have too much dairy. I did not take any medication except one dose of pepto bismol which should have worn off several days ago. I did eat fairly large meals, so that probably just irritated my stomach. An ulcer seems unlikely - my life is not very stressful, and I haven't had any heartburn or discomfort eating acidic things, or discolored stools. But if I find myself spitting blood again or not feeling better after another week I'll go to the doctor.
