When I went to Birmingham England, I had a real hard time understanding some of what they were saying! I mean, were they really speaking English?

It's a fair shout. That city is full of freaks.

For the most part i can, i have met a few Bostonians that i had a very difficult time with. But they sure made the conversation fun.

Had to try hard to not make it seem like i was laughing at them… but to my ears the word Butt is heard far more often that then word (which i can not remember it was supposed to be) actually being referenced.

Agreed. The Boston accent is the hardest one.

If you’re into accents - the International Dialects of English Archive is fascinating. When I taught English to immigrants, I used to make my advanced students listen to the older people with heavy Boston accents and try to figure them out. (They were all studying to be nursing assistants mostly in nursing homes, so they needed to practice!)

The accent on tv isn’t necessarily accurate. Maybe Matt Damon since he’s from here.

I do think most accents are watered down for TV in general. Even the Texas twang is muted in most instances.

Never been to Scotland or Ireland. They are on the bucket list.

I’m just surprised it’s the hardest for anyone! I know I’m biased but I still don’t think it’s as heavy as some Appalachian or rural Mississippi/Alabama accents.

I speak my native language, English, was taught German in primary, French in high school, I'm learning Spanish, Dutch is just a matter of alcohol percentage and Swedes and Norwegians the same.

It is all point of reference I suppose. If I had grown up in Boston, Texas or Chicago would seem off to me. It is just a matter of perspective.
