I’m OCD, I shower before bed and then again before work to wake up. Not too mention checking to make sure the oven/stove is off and the doors are locked on average three times before bed. I’m a weird fucker.

So I have a potential help for this OCD.

You need a secondary stimulus to follow your action. Something out of the norm.

You turn off your oven. Touch the hood. You'll forget the oven cause its so routine. But the hood stimulus is outside the routine and not as forgotten.

Your your door and tap on the mailbox. Etc

That would only work if you have aligning checks. If you both have different idiosyncracies or triggers then it could be unwieldy and cause further complications.

our back door seems to be unlocked most of the time which generally is not very good.

I already got a man who does it and even "clears the house" after we're gone for a day.

Nah. There’s been more than once I have wandered to the kitchen and found I left the oven on.

okay but
this happened...
I apparently left my back (and very small) burner on low keeping something warm. Hubby and I left for the WEEKEND and left my 17 and 9 year olds home alone. Somehow they avoided that burner the entire weekend. I realized it when I got home and put myself into a full blown panic attack. I have never not triple checked since then.

edit to add - oven I wouldn't worry as much about as a GAS burner open flame situation

I just make sure the security door is locked every time I come inside. I very rarely lock the door. From April - September when it hot out, I don't use my stove. The kitchen is too hot from the sun on that side of the house all afternoon/evening.
