The Left Bank...a cafe and gallery for Lit artists and art lovers

I like the pin-up art here...as something to drool over mostly. I can appreciate a beautiful body, be it female or male, and I find the pin-up art highly erotic. On the other hand I am with Chele in that I do not hanker to own it particularly.

Now realistic nudes done on paper in charcoal and pastels are the ultimate for me. I've seen some really beautifully done photographs as well that I'd enjoy owning. In these types of artworks I can both appreciate the skill of the artist, or when in the mood the erotic and beautifully portrayed subject matter can help to get me in the mood.

Having said all of that, I find that I am attracted to any drawing (whether it be figurative, landscapes or simply still life) where I can see the strokes of the artist's pencil, charcoal etc. Colour is a huge draw for me too...I am sure much of that is because my artistic taste is immature and undeveloped. But vibrant colours in any medium scream at me to buy it!

And I also find myself attracted to art works where I can read something into it. Even if the artist never intended it. I love a piece that has a political or social message. If I get that out of a piece, then I am attracted to it as well.

Ari ... The pin-up stuff is interesting ... ahh, the joys of the male-gaze! Like you, I am a big fan of the pulp/noir/neo-noir genre (and yes, I am aware of the school of thought that noir is not a genre but a visual style) - however, like Chele said, the individual works that you posted are not my cup of tea (how typically English!) Having said that, I would quite like to have, say, 30 of them as cigarette cards (remember them?) all framed together.

Chele - glad you appreciate the Lenkiewicz site. To really get to grips with him you have to see his work in the flesh. His Projects on Orgasm, Women and Addiction are particularly interesting. Yep - he is a pretty unique artist.

Arden - welcome. Not ANOTHER coffee drinker ... where are all the winos?!!!

Mya - Interesting words/thoughts. Why not post examples of things that spark you?

Here's another of mine ... yet another different style, Ari!!!

Nice one Starfire!
Is it a self portrait? and as usual i'm intrigued by your technique and media...Watercolor and what?

Mya! I'd know those succulent breasts anywhere! And yes by all means post some works that you like here.

No pulp art on the walls huh?...GEE You guys are just to hi-brow!
;)

The coffee pot is beckoning and I have to answer the call.

Before we leave Pin ups behind...here's two by my favorite,
Edward Runci...

Hmmm ... guess art is not for everyone, huh? Then again, it does not surprise me - it makes a change to meet ANYONE who is art-literate these days.

Ari - nope, it is not a self-portrait but, as the title suggests, a pic of Bob Dylan who, interestingly enough had a (shite) album called "Self Portrait" for the cover of which he did a self portrait (marginally less shite than the album!)

Anyways ... the portrait is painted entirely in gouache, though I used a diffuser to splatter some pale inks onto the paper first. The other splatters are watered-down gouache.

Mya ... only THREE posts to go!!! Woohoo!

Ari ... we need to generate some interest in this thread. How about if we invite people to suggest a theme for a drawing/painting/whatever ... and we both work on it, posting pics of the work in progress as and when we feel like it?

Any other artist on here who wants to join in is welcome. I know that my partner would be interested too.

Just a thought.

Arts

Hi Starfire,

I love the painting, I have so much admiration for people like Ari and yourself who can visualize an image in your head and put it down on paper for others to share.

I would like to share this with you guys, having had a pretty non constructive week I needed to calm myself down and find that gentler side of myself that I seem to have lost recently.

Whilst paintings can impart a sense of the erotic and I would like to open the forum to a different medium which provides me with a degree of expression that can not be placed in words and yet can fill the mind with images and the heart with feelings.

I won't say what was in my mind or was in my heart when I composed this, it is a simple melody for guitar with a single violin accompaniment and a synthesizer pad for atmosphere. But feel free to comment and be gentle :)

The slow and fast decay is a style I have taken from Vangelis one of my favorite composers of atmospheric music. Plus he uses a DX-7 - just like me :) LOL - well he used to.

Night Falls over Squantz Pond

Hello all! Ari - don't tell me you couldn't recognize Bob Dylan! Good heavens! :D

I agree. More interest needs to be generated here! I wish I was more "art literate". Unfortunately, I only know when I see something I like! And very little in the erotic theme.

Starfire, I really do like your work. I like the soft, darker, muted colors. It almost has a dreamlike quality to it. Yet sharp enough to allow the viewer to see what is reflected.

Okay, so you will have to explain gouache to me - I have no clue what that is!

Snork! I almost cross-posted over ya! All these talented together and I get to enjoy the benefits. I'm lovin' it!

Hi Ari, Chele, SM and Star..........stop in to say hi......now getting off because I just drove in from Boston and am very tired.......I told my best friend 1sexylady to stop in here more.......She sure can draw, but just never has the time for it.........I wish she made the time. Also Hi to mya and Arden, I didn't want to forget you too..........I wish I had some talent..........you sure do.

Just stopping by before bed -

Hi Chele, <hugs>, looks like I just missed you :(, I have to add this to my subscribed threads.

I'm not sure what gouache means. I think it means crude or unrefined but don't quote me.

And I have cooled down a bit sorry for the past few days :( - I think my periods are starting again LOL

My hormones are shot to peices - I know its no excuse :(

And Angel <hugs> I just saw you somewhere else. Boston, I used to hate driving in Boston, I doubt it has got any better. But it is a beautiful city, and has some wonderful resturants.

and of course the Red Sox ;)

Sleep well

Snork ... Chele ... thank you both. Hi too to Angel.

SM - I have no sound at the moment but look forward to listening to your composition as soon as it is fixed (actually I just need to get up off my arse and buy some longer phono cables!)

Gouache ... essentially this is an opaque watercolour. It comes in tube form and mixes with water to dilute, but it does not "thin" like water colours - it spreads and covers well and remains re-workable. An interesting medium. I used to use it a lot because it was cheaper than good quality watercolours and smells nice.

Angel ... I want to visit Boston!

My room smells of oils, linseed and refined turps. Mmmmmmm!

Thanks for the welcome

Last night. Tonight, I'm wearing another Arden original - a watercolor of Pavlova that I painted about 1980 or 1981.

I haven't done much painting since my kids were born, now it's time to start up again... as soon as I'm done renovating my Victorian home. The house is my creative outlet for the moment.

DUMB!!!
I should read the title shouldn't I.
Dylan, Bob...I think I at one time owned every record including self portrait that he'd ever made...(remember records anybody?)

Good Idea Starfire...I'm game for it.
Does anyone have a theme idea for a painting/drawing...(no landscapes please!...well maybe but not calendar stuff)

Chele...big Kiss!...how about it...got any ideas.

Arden...I wish we could see your work larger than 150 pix...any chance. The Pavlova looks terrific.

Angel, I remember driving in Boston as a particularly bad nightmare...hope it's improved.

Snork I'm so glad we have a music contribution! I linked to it from your PM without reading what you'd written here and saw mist rising from the water and the promise of a new day...not to perceptive huh?
But it was utterly lovely and much, much appreciated.

Hello to you too Angel...good to see you again. Hey Snork...nice new AV by the way too. I bet it has some of the artists here itching to draw you!

Arden, lovely watercolour you're sporting! We have a good start of talented artists here with Arden, Star and Ari.

Only one more for me now Star! Thanks for noticing!

Thanks for the compliment Mya.

Now, hit reply, and you'll have 1000! Congrats!

Ari, I have a larger .jpg, uncropped, taken outside in my garden. It fills the computer screen. But, detail is lacking if you try to zoom in because it was done on very heavyweight watercolor paper, rough in texture.

Good morning every body

Hi Mya, nice to see you I hope you are well, and congratualtions on your 1000th post :)

Hi Arden good to see to you too, where did you get your nick inspiration, just curious I live about 14 miles from a place called Henley in Arden in Warwickshire.

Okey Dokely, just a quick post this morning, I have a busy day scheduled.

To answer a couple of peoples questions.

Squantz Pond is a lake which was right near to were my parents live in CT and where I spent many wintery days skating and summer days swimming and evenings just walking.

Good Morning, Snork Maiden...

Henley In Arden... Is that where they have the races each year? Or Henley On Thames? We drove through the place on the day of the races two summers ago, all the menfolk wearing their colorful jackets...

Warwickshire is a favorite place for me, my grandfather was born in Aston by Birmingham in 1878. My great grandparents were in the malting & brewing industry there. They rest today in the churchyard of St. Johns in Perry Barr. Their home was in Handsworth in the 1890s - 1930s, but it was unfortunately bulldozed to make way for flats in the 1930s or 1940s. I have a photo of the inside of their living room. I also have family roots in Rock, Worcestershire and Cirencester, GLS.

Arden is a corruption of my name... :)

I know exactly what you mean, Arden! Love the watercolour ... the Degas influence is obvious, but who else do you like?

SM is right about the place in Warwickshire ... Shakespeare associations - Forest of Arden and the Arden editions of Shakeapeare's plays. Any connection?

Squantz Pond ...

... how American ... to call a lake the size of Lancashire a "pond"!!!

Looks lovely, SM.

It was sort of spooky! :D

Let's see... I love Renoir, his colors and technique... just for starters. Oh my, I do hope that I've spelled his name correctly!

Good morning Ari, Chele, SM, Star,Arden and mya.

Boston is still a mess with all the digging going on.
