The Left Bank...a cafe and gallery for Lit artists and art lovers

It is with delight to discover this thread - and I want to throw in my 2 cents.

We do a Day of the Dead show each here - for those of you unfamiliar with Dia de los Muertos - it is a Mexican holiday on November 1st and 2nd honoring the dead. Last year my piece centered around 9-11. It had to - there was too much that needed to be processed, too many images that I needed to get out. That was also my way of honoring the dead.

Artists respond to their world - you bet your bottom dollar you're going to see a lot of art come out that deals with that tragedy. And it will deal with evil, pain, loss, and lots of the "negative" things. Art is there to speak about all of that. It ain't all just purty pictures.

Ok... done for now...

Hi Artemesia I wish you would post you painting of 9-11......Dead speaks in many ways.

Thank you.....It just sounds very interesting.

Hi everyone ... Snork snuck into the UK thread and reminded me that I hadn't been here for a while. How right she was! My lame reply to her was that I hadn't been feeling very creative ... actually I was sulking because I do not know the picture that Ari posted (giggle). I guess I need HK here to fire me up creatively ... she's back later on today :)

Artemesia ... welcome to the thread. Interesting concept - I too would love to see your Day of the Dead piece. What medium is it in?

Hi Ari, Snork, Angel, HL, Arden, Mya and the rest of you Left Bankers ...

Oh, btw ...

... I see that both Snork and Sienna are sporting their Ari AVs ... Excellent :)

Drawing and found objects - all pieces for this show have to be under 12" square (it's a big show), so I had to work small.

Hi Artemesia!
Very good to see you here..
I'd love to see the work as well.

Ive been negligent too Star...the picture, really you don't know?
Hint...19th Century academician.

Hey Snork and Angel thanks for coming by.

Thanks for posting the link Ari and left you a message over there.

Good morning all ... Ari - I think I know the painting, but have not yet gone to my art books. Is it the one that has a larger nude by an outside pond, with loads of marble?

Looking forward to your next drawing of Sie.

Oh, the intelligence of the art world!

There was a feature article in yesterday's Observer newspaper that I thought I would share.

The British conductor, Sir Simon Rattle, has been appointed as artistic diector of the Berlin Philharmonic. His parting shot was to attack the "anything goes" attitude of modern British art and artists. He said, "That is the problem with Brit Art, with artists like Damien Hirst, Tracy Emin and others. I believe that much of this English, very biographically-oriented art is bullshit."

One of the enfants terribles of the Brit Art scene - Dinos Chapman - responded: "Simon Rattle is a twat and his music is boring."

Oohhhhhhhh.... handbags at ten paces!:D

Another hint Starfire...
Thomas Eakins trained under him.

If fools may step in... and I'm not at all familiar with the artists whose name you brought up....
I too find introspective, autobiographical pieces somewhat cheeky.
Who cares but you!

Less of course they appeal on a decorative level.

... There was also a documentary on last night about Brit Art, and it became so glaringly obvious that success has little to do with talent but is more to do with gallery owners, curators and the artists' agents. It is they who MAKE an artist famous, art and artists being a commodity whose function is to line the pockets of the wealthy. Whether a piece has any intrinsic artistic value is largely irrelevant ... an artist will not break through nationally and internationally until the major players in the art market decide.

If this Dinos Chapman is around for as long as Sir Simon Rattle, and makes anywhere near as valuable a contribution as he has over the years, maybe his opinion will gain some weight!

Yep ... Dinos works with his brother, Jake, on installations such as large graves containing mutilated, grotesque dolls etc ... The following is his raison d'etre:

" ... We fantasize about producing things with zero cultural value, to produce aesthetic inertia - a series of works of art to be consumed and then forgotten.!

Hmmmmmmm ...

You know it's folks like Dino that give art a bad name.

Having been associated with galleries for many years I can tell you that what Star has said is unfortunately true.
If you are lucky you will find a gallerey that will carry you even if your not commercially viable since they'll support themselves with those who are.
Good luck on finding one.

Ariosto - I've had a few minutes spare and done some digging based on the clue you gave. Is it the Slave Auction by Gerome?

I've never come across his work before, but it has a fantastic luminous quality to it.

HL ... thanks for doing the work for me, and of course you are right. What a fantastic painting ... I have never seen it before. I love the figure sitting on the floor .... Makes me want to paint a "copy" replacing the figures in the painting with people from Lit.....Hmm.. Who would be the Slave Master? :)

Yes indeed HL...that's the one!
Now how about you posting the next installment of Mystery Flesh?

Hey Star, we need another art debate...what would make a good one?

Lets see...I don't want to be the slavemaster.
Just the drooling septigenarian that takes her home with him!

Lazy bones:rolleyes: I like the idea for the picture, though.

Well....I'll see what I can do, Ariosto:)

Hi all ... Y'know, I really want to create right now but have such a lot of shit running through my mind. I need to take a chill pill before it consumes me.
