The Xavier Institute For Higher Learning

he was right. as usual. he would get to watch the training. who ho. at least he would get to see what they could do. that cheered him up a little. if he knew what they could do, he also knew what they couldnt. and that was were he came in. after all, he was the perfect guy to fill in the cracks(or so he thinks).
so he nodded, said "understood", and walked over to xavier to stand by him. he also greeted specter. "hello specter. pleasure that you could join us. now lets watch these guys show us what they can do."

Feron is Chosen for the Exercise

She took a minute to decide, looking over the other three students hoping to enter the Danger Room. Then she turned to her right and looked directly at Feron.

“Ok...Feron, I choose you.”

He smiled. He almost knew that he would be chosen. After all, he was closest to graduating. Just a few final exams and he’d be out of school and ready to join the team full-time. He was hoping he could eventually show the Professor that he had what it took to be an X-Man, and this training scenario could be just what he was looking for.

His smile was lightly tempered as he realized that he would be in the Danger Room with some of the senior X-Men as well. He’d be competing for the Professor’s attention and praise with Wolverine, Nocturne, and Hellion. And with Skoll and Warfly in there as well, Feron hoped he could perform well enough to garner some interest.

He cracked his knuckles and looked around.

“Wolverine, Skoll, Hellion, Warfly, I really hope you can keep up with the two of us, right TJ?” He gave her a light elbow in the arm and smiled again.

“So, we ready to get started?”

Skoll was joyous to be chosen for the mission, he knew his place was in battle. He smiled at Feron's comment, "Try not to get hurt mageling, I can't watch your back every moment." he said smiling and laughing. "Thank you for choosing me father." He said, bowing his head to Logan.

Ilyana let out the breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. Nobody had picked her. The Professor probably thought that was a bad thing. She tried not to let her disappointment show as she turned to wait for further instructions. Maybe the ones who weren't chosen would be able to participate in a different way. She crossed her arms and let her mind wander over attack patterns and other drills while they all waited to see what would come next.

TJ turned and looked at Feron.

'Call me Nocturne while we are work ok' she whispered, 'the last thing i need is this crap.'

Outside the Danger Room

Nocturne turned slightly and spoke from the corner of her mouth.

“Call me Nocturne while we are work, OK? The last thing I need is this crap.”

Feron shrugged it off. He was anxious to get into the Danger Room and see what the Professor had in store for them. Skoll turned to him and snarled a response as well.

“Try not to get hurt mageling, I can't watch your back every moment.”

Feron smiled at the comment. Skoll and Wolverine made quite a pair. The two primal X-Men always seemed to want to fight their way into and out of every situation. Feron wondered what it would be like to have that kind of raw power and physical strength. He could morph into Skoll and find out if the need arose for more muscle.

“So Professor, what do you have in store for us today?”

Professor Xavier

Noting the formation of the teams the Professor nods.

"Very well. Feron, Skoll and Warfly, join with the X-Men. Magik, Specter, Psycho, Forge and myself will observe you in the room above the Danger Room. Good luck my X-Men and do not disappoint me." Xavier shot a cold look at Hellion's direction as he led the group out of the room.

As the door to the chamber door closes the Professor feels a sharp twinge. An emotion he can't quite describe. He looks behind him and sees the X-Men assembled in the Danger Room as the door begins to close. Danger has not yet begun the simulation. As an X-Man Xavier feels that Danger should have the same freedom as the other members of the team. He does not mandate what Forge creates and he trusts Danger to design simulations far better than he could ever prescribe. Yet he can't help shake the strange feeling. Even though he cannot yet see the situation occurring in the Danger Room Xavier cannot shake the sense that despite being unknown to him somehow feels familiar.

Ignoring the feeling Xavier leads the group and begins to walk up to the observation room Xavier questions Magik.

"Ilyana, are you aware of the news report that troubled the other students?"

The Danger Room

Danger's eyes flashed blue electricity as she disappeared into the ground. Moments later the scenery around the X-Men began to shift.

They are all outside. It is night time and the team is standing next to a dirt road. Farm land stretches are far as they can see and no sounds of civilization can be heard or scene for miles. A number of large trees surround them in the distance but mostly they stand among unoccupied grass and flatland.

And then the ground shakes. Crackling can be heard in the ground a bright yellow electricity like light begins to fill the cracks. Suddenly without warning every X-Man feels a feeling of emptiness as though as doctor drew blood from them into a needle. They can feel the energy in their heads as though they have a sinus and then in a place they never felt, deeper than their stomachs, a ball of that yellow crackling electric energy erupts out of their guts through their mouths and into the ground in front of them.

All around them, from every direction similar balls of the electric energy are flying through the air and smashing into the ground. The sound around the X-Men is louder than thunder and it sounds like the Earth itself is being torn apart.

In the middle of the madness the yellow energy begins to shift and move. Eventually it condenses and forms what looks like a thin line. Then with a loud, repulsive tearing noise a hole in reality itself is torn in front of the X-Men. Blinded by the light momentarily the X-Men can't see, but they can feel something has changed.

The light is gone. A figure has ripped a whole into their world and stepped onto their plane.

Some of the X-Men recognize the man standing in front of them.

The right eye of the young man crackles with electricity and he stands before the X-Men with a grim demeanor.

Specter

Dallas Gibson listens to Professor Xavier hand out grades. As Professor Xavier raves about Hellion's great work Specter cannot help to feel but a little proud. He and Julian arrived at Xavier's at about the same time and he felt hopeful that if his friend could become an X-Man maybe one day he could too.

But Specter began too frown and stare at Julian in disgust when the Professor points out that he had been surfing the internet during a training mission.

"What the fuck!?" the young mutant thinks angrily.

"People would kill to be in the positions he's in, and this jackass just goofs off!?" Specter thinks furious at Julian's actions.

"Maybe he'll get demoted and sent back to school like the rest of us. That'll knock Ms. Frost favorite student off his high horse."

Specter waits for Xavier to tell Hellion off. But his disgust turns to dismay when he remains team leader.

"It's all a fix. Julian is born with those powers and from day one the X-Men have privileged him. Rockslide never would have gotten away with that!!! But the X-Men let him do whatever he wants. Well at least they kept him leader. I better get ready, I know he'll choose...." Before Specter can finish the thought he watches as his old classmate chooses Feron to go on the mission.

Sure Feron was a senior student and much closer to graduating onto become an X-Man than Specter but Julian was his friend.

"Former friend" the shadow walker thinks coldly.

Turning around with Xavier Gibson sulks.

"I guess we'll start our own team." he says quietly to Ilyana and Jake.

"The X-tras. Cause it seems all we are is extras around here."

X-Man

(100, 100)

Leaping into the air X-Man calls to the X-Men below with urgency.

"BEGIN THE DEFENSE!!!!!!!!"

His hands begin to crackle with yellow energy. A large sphere begins to project over the entire sky.

"HAVE THEY ALL BEEN GATHERED HERE!?!?!? I can only protect so much with my shields. I'll keep them out for as long as I can but we have....to....." the urgency in his voice leaves as he looks below at the confused X-Men.

"What the fuck have you clowns done!?" he says as he begins to fall slowly to the ground.

"Why....why have you brought me back before you're prepared? I know too much!! With my power, my knowledge of them will draw them here now!!! Where is everyone!? Where are all the others? Is this all you have gathered!? Nooooo!" he screams angrily.

"You idiots!!! You...fucking idiots!!!!" he looks at the X-Men coldly.

"Xavier...was supposed to prepare you. Congratulations. You just gave your entire planet a death sentence."

Staring at each of the X-Men X-Man looks at Cyclops, Hellion and Nocturne and begins to pull thoughts out of their heads.

"I won't let you take the others down with you. You failed your world so your world suffers." X-Man's eyes begin to crackle.

"You won't have to wait for the Guardians to come and judge you. I'm making the decision for you. You all failed, so you all die." he says stonely.

"Beginning with Xavier. Where is he? WHERE is Xavier?" he asks coldly.

Pulling their memories and images out of their minds X-Man replays the recent events.

Vulcan, the Professor, the Danger Room and then him.

Suddenly he looks a little sick.

Staring at his hands he depowers and looks around.

"This...this isn't real, is it? I'm not...real?" he asks confused.

A slow smile begins to stretch across his face.

"There is still time? There is still..." suddenly the sick look returns.

"Oh God...what...what have I done!?" he says as a telepathic projection of himself replays his last words.

"You won't have to wait for the Guardians to come..."

X-Man stares with a defeated face at his own memory made alive.

"What have I done...." he looks down to the ground and then looks up.

"If I'm not real...I can't fix this....now you all know. Now that you know they are coming they WILL come. The death sentence for your planet was just sped up." X-Man's eyes look toward the ground and then rise again. This time his eye crackles with power.

"There is only one way. If no one knows they are coming, it will give us more time to prepare. But your minds are now like blood in the water, drawing sharks to this world X-Men. If I'm not real then I can't erase your minds and what you know now. But, I can erase all of you." he says as he begins to take flight again, his eyes and hands crackling with psionic power.

"If no one on this world knows they are coming that will keep them away. It will give us time. No one can know. I'm sorry." he says as he fires a telepathic blasts at two of the X-Men.

Ilyana jumped slightly then looked at the Professor. "I didn't see much sir, but it was very shocking to see the young woman become so old that quickly." She dusted an invisible speck off her shirt as she tried to gather her thoughts. "It was very alarming, that was why some of us came to see you." She only half listens to Dallas Gibson saying something about forming their own team, her eyes now riveted to the scenario playing out below. Professor..are they supposed to defeat Vulcan or merely disarm him somehow?" Magik shuddered at Vulcan's words of apology and doom. "What on earth is he talking about?" She thought to herself as she observed the session.

Tj

Nocturne stood frozen unsure of what was going on, to her it looked like they were in the Savage land, and if memory served, that was Nate Grey Hovering above them.

Yet he seemed to be having a double personality problem, and she suddenly had a stranged foreboding of something heading straight for her.

WarFly

Warfly looked on towards X-Man and felt himself unsure of what to do.

'Helion? Wolverine? Nocturne? What the fuck should we do?'

He began to hover without thinking, his wings detected changes in air currents.

'Guys, what should we do?'

jake hears dallas complain, and concerned, he tries to comfort him with a little humor. "dallas, we are not in the danger room because we are extraordinary. we can anylize out teams weaknesses, amd work to streanthen them, so that the team will succed. that also means using our full streanth on the battlefield, because the team seems to have alot of weaknesses. but we can fix um!" he says with a simile

Professor Xavier

Listening to Ilyana Professor Xavier begins to frown.

"That is indeed quite strange and frightening. I wonder if some testing on some new bio weapon is taking place?" He says aloud. For a moment he drifts into thought, wondering the if the terrible "disease" that gripped a small German town last year and the strange case the children are telling him about may be related. The outbreak in Germany turned people into a form of bone marrow "vampires" and was originated by a mutant.

The X-Men had come so far in helping the perception of mutants across the world. He hoped nothing would change that. Still he does not want his students to panic.

"It is wrong of us to speculate however. If necessary Hank and I will lend our ears to the situation and see if it is something we recognize or can help." he says as he turns his attention toward the simulation.

Looking down at the Danger Room from the observation room Professor Xavier tilts his head quizzically.

"I must say after reviewing Danger's previous simulation and this one I'm a bit mystified as to her selection of opponents. You see, I have made Danger responsible for internal security and maintenance at the Institute. Danger will make sure every team member has sufficient training and experience to represent the X-Men on away missions. Her job however, is to do more than just provide a combat opponent but to simulate a mini mission of sorts. As for what mission the X-Men are meant to accomplish by facing Vulcan and now Nate Grey, I must say that I bit at a lost for explanations." the Professor says holding his chin.

"So far children, give me your analysis. What do you see? How would you approach this situation?"

Cyclops

(100, 100)

He recognizes him immediately. He is Nate Grey, refugee from another Earth. A world ruled by the strong at the expense of the weak. Cyclops learned Nate was that dark world's shining hope for change. He quite literally had the power to change the world. But their hope ended when that world was destroyed and Nate found himself in our world.

He called it a better world. But for all of the hope that Nate brought his world in ours things are much different. And at times the young man more closely embodied the brutal and heartless world he was raised in, and not the hope that he once inspired.

"Calm down Warfly." Scott worries if the students are ready. The X-Men, the world needs them more than ever but if they are rushed before they are ready it could prove disasterous. But still, highlighting indecision like this is what this training is for.

Then suddenly Scott is griped by fear.

What was it that Xavier said earlier? He removed any psychic commands and overrides he once put into Danger because he felt Danger had the same freedom as any of the X-Men?

And now, one of the most powerful mutants they had ever encountered is threatening to kill them for a reason no one understands.

In a moment Scott's mind shifts. He doesn't know if he's training or fighting for his life. Either way, he knows he and the X-Men have got to step up.

Battle strategies fly through Cyclops head. Excalibur had once defeated Nate but he was far less experienced in the use of his powers. Professor X, Emma or.....Jean stood the best chance at defeating him with their psionic abilities but none of them were here.

Scott looked around.

They could surround him and they had him overmatched in number. But even with their numbers, were they powerful enough to destroy a boy with enough psycic power to scare the Professor?

Cyclops stands straight and tries to relax. He doesn't think they can overpower him.

"Try to reason with him." Scott thinks.

"Nate....son...." Cyclops says quietly.

"You are in the Danger Room at the Xavier Institute. You are a holographic simulation. We expected to be in a Danger Room session. No one is going to kill anyone. Tell us what has happened. We don't know what you're talking about? Who failed? What was Charles Xavier supposed to do? What can we do to fix this?"

Cyclops hoped reasoning with him worked. But he wondered if others would be more aggressive.

"well profesor, prehaps she is testing our abilitys against high level mutants. we need experience fighting them, and who better to recive it from then danger herself? and just incase we try to reson with the enemy, she gave them a story that they are convinced by that seems conplete nonsense to us." jake nods at his idea. "it makes sence, and forces us to survive in the face of odds". then he looks at the profesor as he says his next words. "a perfect training exerise, i think".

Wolverine and Skoll

"Get ready Eirik," Logan said gruffly, deploying his claws. "Yes, father." Skoll said, deploying an armblade and invoking the runes on his hand to charge his fell lightning. "What is it you want Grey?" Logan asked. "Why are you here?"

Nocturne fell to ground, and rubbing her head stood once more.

she turned to the others, 'Im ok i just stumbled.'

She began to wander around th group, attmpting to look for a decent view of Nate.

'Ok, Scott is doing his chatty stuff...any other ideas?'

"So far children, give me your analysis. What do you see? How would you approach this situation?"
Ilyana analyzed the situation below. Measuring her words carefully as she answered the Professor. "Well sir, I'd most likely take the route that Cyclops is attempting. Perhaps reasoning with Nate will work. It would save a great deal of energy if we could talk to him and get him to see that we mean no harm." She paused in thought seeing Nocturne fall. "I'd make sure I knew a way to block any sort of telepathic invasion as well. Just in case someone tried to influence me."

jake heard magik's answer, and thought about it. "she has a good idea, but it is nearly imposible to have a sure way to block that kind of telepathic power. it would be best to talk, and if that fails, it would be best to use group tatics to try to tire nate out, then bring him down."

Feron Is Persuaded By Another

(100,100)

Feron watched as his team lead, Nocturne, fell to the ground. His head pounded and he began to feel drained. He began to sink, hovering lower and lower to the ground. Just before his feet touched the dark soil of the freshly tilled field, he regained his composure and returned to his normal levitation height.

He tried to clear the fog from his mind as Cyclops began to talk to the figure he had identified as Nate, and son. Feron’s mind searched for the connection, but found little except disjoined thoughts and random images.

What had this mutant done to him? He scanned his teammates as the haze continued to probe every recess of his mind. Cyclops was ahead of the group, with Hellion and Warfly close behind. Wolverine and Skoll were off to the left, claws drawn and ready for battle. Nocturne was wandering among the team, searching for a clear line of vision.

Feron’s eyes fixated on Hellion. His friend stood slightly behind and to the right of Cyclops, a perfect position for a supporting attack. Hellion was scanning the countryside, looking for something he could use as a weapon against this new foe.

A part of his mind cleared and screamed at him. Something was wrong, dreadfully wrong. He heard the incantation coming from his own lips, but could do nothing to stop it. The blue haze covering his arms began to consolidate in his hands as the light chanting continued. From the beginning of the incantation to releasing the high-powered bolts of energy from his hands usually took only seconds, but the time seemed to stretch into infinity. The invocation was finished and Feron’s hands raised up to release the bolts directly into his friend’s back.

His eyes watered. He did not wish to try and kill his friend, but he had no control. This mutant before them was controlling him, forcing him to use his powers. The sinister glowing yellow eye was upon him, urging him, compelling him, to strike without mercy. A tear rolled down his cheek as he tried to hold back the power, trying to keep it from releasing on his companions. It was a battle he was slowly losing. It had been a powerful incantation, one of the strongest he knew.

“Hellion! Move!” he yelled, hoping that he would understand the seriousness in the tone of his voice. “He’s forcing me to…”

The warning was cut short as the forking bolts of energy ripped through the calm air towards the back of Hellion.
