for me it was running up and down hills and a lot of tabbing with weight on my back. you'll know what i mean when i say carrying a GPMG around isn't covered by manual handling operations regulations. ;) nor is exiting the side door of the c-130 good for the spine, especially the landing phase.

For my son's 21st we took him tank driving (Brilliant day out. Nr Oxford).

At the tea break, we went to the armoury and there was the German mg34 (I may be wrong with the numerals - but the typical Spandau you see in films).
When encouraged to pick it up... I nearly broke in two...

It was heavier than two breeze blocks...

It just shows how tough you guys are carrying that or anything similar around... And how much Hollywood bullshit is on films when actors wave them around like sticks.

This one in particular had done several tours of Vietnam as the guy's father's weapon of choice - purchasing it himself over the US preferred weapon.

I now feel such a pussy moaning of a bad back after riding a motorbike / skiing / just doing DIY...

The famous (or infamous depending on which side one stands) Einheitsmaschinengewehr MG34 . . . I seen one, and yes it is heavy 14 stone to be precise. Mr Mauser knew what he was doing when they designed it, and yes, you have to be built like Arny Shwarzy or the Italian Stallion to be able to shoot it from the hip!

Reading up on it I believe that it was probably one of the best "light" machine guns ever made.

14 stone !! fuck me...

The story the guy had on the MG was unbelievable.

It was only when his father died and his old Vietnam vet buddies came to the funeral and retold the same stories did he realise the shit his dad had been through.

He is trying to write a book on his fathers experiences.

It made for a brilliant 21st for my son...
We both drove an APC... then a Russian version of the abbot...
Then his birthday prize was to drive the challenger from fast & furious 6...
AND crush a car...

My brother used an SLR when he was in the army and he said that was heavy enough..

I made a slight miscalculation . . . apologies . . . the MG 34 weighs 5 stone with tripod, still heavy enough!

Not far from where I live there is the Tank Regiment Museum, took my father in law there for his 80th birthday, he was a tank commander in the Korean war, the curator allowed my FIL to take an old Sherman for a spin, he was over the moon,

As you say - still bloody heavy.

I assume you mean Bovington? Love it, took my lad there so many times... & when we were kids. Their Tank days are brilliant. We went to one to see the Tiger drive around.

There is a French tank museum in Saumer (I thinkthta is the spelling). AT the end of his last school summer, before he started work I took my lad there for their open day... Unlike Bovington they drive the tanks through the town, tear up the tarmac and the stadium has no real fencing, so you are close to the tanks...

Then we went to Holland to see their tank fest... The tanks drive up thro the crowds, over an old cold war air base. Pay 5 Euros and you can pick which ever vehicle to ride on (no tanks)... you just sign a waiver and ride... Brilliant place. To be walking around and have shermans and leopard 2's driving by...

As if we didn't get enough of late . . . rain for the next 6 days or so, but it looks like it's going to be dry for the Bank Holiday . . . not watered down IPA as one mingles with mates in the beer garden!
