Do men ever admit to wearing shapewear? The few that I have encountered that do wear things refer to them as compression garments to make it sound more sporty.

I don’t have much in the way of boobs or bum so I do wear bras that “enhance” the lift and provide a fuller cup. I don’t wear anything to pump up my buttocks.

I find shapewear to be uncomfortable and when I look in the mirror with it on, my first thought is “what fucking shape do you call that”!

If a person wears something that changes their body shape so that it is unrecognisable when they aren’t wearing it then they should be sued for misleading a client individual.

I wonder if, without the enhancing bra and if I added a cod piece to my nether regions, I could pretend to be a man?

I hadn't ever considered wearing shapewear- not even a rolled up sock in my underwear. I was doing some doomscrolling while having breakfast and ran across this old ad (see below) which got me to thinking- I know, that's dangerous for me. Even still, just found it a curious topic.

I didn't want to limit the topic to just about the ad, so I broadened it.

If I wore a muscle suit and a cod piece could I attract millionaire women? Would that actually work? Seems silly. But the premise in this ad is that it should work.

And about suiting up like a man like you suggest- I feel certain that must have been done before. I'm pretty sure I saw it in a movie or TV at least once.

Something I almost never see talked about. The one or two times that I have, the conversation was mockingly done. So it occured to me to post it on Lit somewhere. Why not here.

For decades, in the U.S. at least, we have all seen women's shapewear and recognize it a choice many women make in clothing and most of us think little of it. And I say that, as my experience in the topic is limited- no offense to women meant.

What about men's shapewear? Is it a source of derision and jokes or is it relatively equal in regard to women's shapewear? Would any man admit to wearing shapewear?

Is shapewear embarrassing to people? Has anyone encountered a new lover and found that all their curves had been modified my shapewear? Is that upsetting somehow? Does it even matter?

And just so we're clear, specifically, I am thinking of super elasticy shapewear that trims a person down 4 sizes, or makes breast cups tremendous, or super rounded butts, cod pieces, or muscle padding. Shit like that.

Go back to 1920s and earlier, and it was normal for both genders to use shapewear. Usually adding more than trying to squeeze in, though. Public and private body figure wasn't even expected to be the same - it never was. Fashionable silhouette also changed, and it's not like your body would change back and forth between sloping and square shoulders etc.

Oh btw you can't really go down 4 sizes with shapewear. You can't push that much flesh to the side. Especially not on men, when it's not about hourglass figure.

I'm a friend of reason. I don't mind some shapewear. What I can't stand is being terribly vain and shallow. And i think that limit comes waaaaaaay before my limit for shapewear.

Yea, I have zero idea what would be reasonable size compression. I just threw that out there.

I head you about accepting what you have as far as bodies go, and yet the shapewear industry is alive and well, innovative, and prospering. I looked up men's shapewear after my initial idea for this topic and was shocked a little and amused by what's available and apparently has dome degree of popularity.

I don't know any man that wears this stuff or would admit to it. Is that strange?

That is how they have sold clothes, fads and diets to people for decades.

Nowadays, “must be the same shape naked and clothed” would probably be in any decent pre-nup. Although, they would probably know what you look liked naked before you even walked down the aisle.

In a world where we are constantly being told to be our true selves, this industry is still making a lot of money.

The men I have encountered that wear something are usually not that out of shape. They have a dad bod and cannot get the few final inches to tone no matter how much they go to the gym. The majority are divorced and want to look their physical best when going on the dating scene.

I was in a shop a few weeks ago and there was a couple of young girls looking at the lingerie. They were fascinated by the different types of padding in the bras and particularly by the ones with gel pads. They purchased one each. The market is already grabbing those young teens and telling them their perfect bodies can be even more perfect.

There is a TV programme here at the moment that is about “The price of perfection”. It covers a range of different treatments and surgeries to make the body look “better”. Some of the lengths that people go to are so extreme. I guess buying a bit of shapewear is a lot less risky in the long term (although I do know of women that have worn things so tight, they have fainted)

Where would you draw the line, though? Ordinary men's suit is already "correcting" the body, and not just adding to shoulders. It's basically trying to sculpt the silhouette towards the desired one.

Which one reason why women often like to look at men wearing well-fitting tailored suits or tailcoats.

Sure , it's not considered shapewear, yet it has the same purpose. I wouldn't be too limiting.

What I can't understand is how people agree to wear spandex shapewear as its terribly uncomfortable. It doesn't shape you at all if it isn't stretched - meaning it's pushing you inwards. No way to make that confy. Also spandex doesn't breath. As a woman I much rather wear historical corsets etc. So much more comfy. (No, it doesn't mean tighlacing, which was always done by a minority anyway and never recommended. It was scandalous because it wasn't the norm.)

I don’t care about the shape of a man’s body. If I like the man then I like the man. Physical has never been an issue for me. I like a man to dress well when I am out with him but not because of the shape it would give him but because I want him to make that effort for me.

I've never chosen a man after the shape of his body.

However, I do like when men dress well. And formal attire is often more flattering when informal.
