What Are You Listening To Now? 6.0

Transatlantic - The Absolute Universe

I wasn't blown away :( I'm well aware of the merits, and there's a lot I enjoyed. But I got the sense they were "pot-boiling" - rehashing the same old formula without much innovation or enthusiasm.

I probably owe it a few more spins.

Oranssi Pazuzu : Mestarin Kynsi

Different! (In a good way.) I appreciate what they're doing, but suspect there's a bit of "different for the sake of being different".

Still good, though, and it will get several more spins.

Leprous : The Congregation

Good!

That's one of my fave recent discoveries and normally, it's the kind of music which gets seriously on my nerves. The singer has a very particular "edge" in his voice which can totally grate, some of their riffs sound overly constructed and jazzy for the sake of being jazzy, but there is that freaking GROOVE which ties everything together and makes it an enjoyable roller coaster.

A demo video for the Roland Jupiter Xm synthesizer. Sounds gorgeous, but will cost at least one kidney more than we can afford right now. Our album sales have pretty much gone poof after molesting friends & family.

Empyrios : Zion

Pretty good old-school metal. But I was over "old school" when it was still new school :D

I like the album. The clean vocals have a nice Rusell Allan vibe and the guitars give me all kinds of Fear Factory/Scar Symmetry flashes. I'm pretty sure either you or litfan got me into them.

Rival Sons : Feral Roots

Ditto (old school stuff) - but this one has strong hooks, fun choral - almost anthemic - vocal sections, and is very approachable.

Pain of Salvation : Panther

What a breath of fresh air!

You can never go wrong with PoS - they're in a whole different league from everything else I've been listening to in the past few days.

Daniel Gildenlow is insanely talented - if a bit nutty. I spent an hour and a half with him after he released "Be". Brilliant - and nutty.

Everything PoS puts out is an auto-buy for me, and all of their albums are spun repeatedly.

Update - I'm listening to this new release due to a very positive review...well, let's just translate "diverse vocals" into what it really is....Freakin' growls. Sigh.

I find PoS is one of the most truly progressive of progressive bands and "Panther" really shows this. I also have them on preorder the instant I see a new release and have never regretted it.

"In the Passing Light of Day" was one of the best albums of 2017 IMHO. It was breath-taking and still my favorite of their work.

I've checked out some of their vids on Youtube. I normally try and find something positive in new music, but this feels like Enslaved light. Boring.

Yeah, it didn't do much for me either without even factoring the growls. Liked Evergrey much better.

Hey, nice recent spat of writing! Good for you.

You and your lady love be safe and well.
