Once I spent a whole day in Skopje, with a girl from Novi Sad. She spoke only in Serbian and I couldn't speak but 2-3 words in that language. Yet, we had a great time. Don't ask me how. I still have no idea. :D

Very generally speaking, Europeans are probably better at connecting with each other across language barriers than Americans. For a lot of us, if the other person doesn't speak English we're just dumbfounded and don't know what to do.

I'm sure we could!
But I'm also sure most of that conversation would be in English. My dad used to travel to Italy a lot and speaks some Italian, but I never had much luck with the Romance languages.
 
A far-out demeaning comment from a co-worker. I handled it well. But I was pissed. I told her I didn't like what she was implicating. I imagine there will be repercussions.
