Finding out that my German, while extremely rusty, can still get me through a short conversation.
Waking up this morning to find my back car window smashed out from a slingshot hit. Not really a good surprise. More of a "holy shit REALLY???" kind of thing.
Once I spent a whole day in Skopje, with a girl from Novi Sad. She spoke only in Serbian and I couldn't speak but 2-3 words in that language. Yet, we had a great time. Don't ask me how. I still have no idea.
Very generally speaking, Europeans are probably better at connecting with each other across language barriers than Americans. For a lot of us, if the other person doesn't speak English we're just dumbfounded and don't know what to do.
I'm sure me and you could find some common ground with Opera.
