When I Was a Kid....

If Footloose was to be believed wiwak there were places in America where dancing was banned...:)

WIWAK we knew the link between these two items ...

Okay...I'm gonna bite! I used to use the pencil eraser to tighten up the cassette tape before putting it into the player, but that's the only link I could think of off the top of my head! Is there something I missed as a youth??

That's the link Ella. :D

WIWAK the concept of the sexy halloween costume was foreign...especially for kids...

WIWAK, the whole family gathered around the one and only black and white television in the house on Sunday evenings to watch "The Wonderful World of Disney." And Disney didn't own the rest of world.

Had a 1947 black n white in my room when I was eight; color tv in living room that I knew how to tune...dad worked for RCA.

WIWAK we had bomb drills in school, and you could hear sonic booms whenever the jets from the nearby air base broke the sound barrier.

WIWAK Days, weeks, months, etc.. seemed longer.

WIWAK things were simple.

Yep. There are three excellent Chinese restaurants in Fort Erie. I have no clue where there's one in Buffalo. These dining establishments just happened to be located in close proximity to some extremely high class strip clubs. I've heard. Can't affirm myself.
We are lucky here as the high class strip club is in a hotel owned by a chinese guy so you can get great chinese food while watching the show!!!

WIWAK We had things called records, 78's, 33 and 45's. You played them on a record player. You had to change the number on the arm depending on which record you were playing

My brother had his own record player and your had to weigh down the arm with pennies which were held in place by a rubber band. It was actually made with RUBBER.

We had a black and white TV for years, I think it was the first on the block

We got cable and a colour TV in 1967, first show we watched was Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea

Without cable we got three TV stations
Two were Vancouver stations and one was Bellingham, WA station which was a CBS affilate

After Cable we got three Seattle stations in the mic then PBS a few years later

WIWAK we had the kind of cable boxes that you had to push a button for each channel

I loved "Voyage to The Bottom of The Sea"

WIWAK we had a telephone line that had only three neighbors on it and you cranked it to ring each one using a different code.

WIWAK I got to take midday naps in school... I think I should start doing something like that again

Did you hold the cassette and turn the pencil around or just jam the pencil in the cassette hole and twirl it fast using your wrist? hehe

LMAO.. depended on how much I liked the tape..

WIWAK the highlight of my day was getting apple juice in a red cup (the cool one) during snack time...

If I Can Remember That Far Back

WIWAK, "Jaws" was scaring the heck out of everyone, then they went and named one of the bad guys in a Bond film Jaws, and it was ridiculous...
I remember Evel Knievel was my hero. I wanted a stunt cycle so bad for Christmas, but my parents said they were too expensive.
My friends, my brother and I would play Planet of the Apes behind the school across the street from us. They had some interesting things to climb on and hide behind to ambush the other side.
Tops and yo-yos were everywhere.
I had a bunch of old Mego superhero action figures, but I could never get all the ones I wanted. They were too expensive too.
In kindergarten, I had a crush on my teacher.
My mother used to send us up to the store with a note to buy her cigarettes.
I went to a Catholic school... walked home at noon, ate lunch, and walked back, all in 45 minutes. That was really quick, considering we were only children and had short legs.

WIWAK I used to ride my bike with my radio strapped to the handlebars and tubing was my absolute fav past time...except for feeling the bubbles under the crashing waves in the ocean on summer trips. WIWAK I lost my first pet...a yellow canary which flew away.... I watched her sitting on the telephone wires...but it was my first realization that animals shouldn't be cooped up.

Yeah, I used to twirl it around! Of course, if I really like the tape, I would use the point of the pencil and use it like a spirograph, another long lost toy from WIWAK...

I, too, used to walk home for lunch. I'm so glad you like the thread, Hawkwind!:D

Great thread Ella, I have enjoyed reading it all.

WIWAK, the corner gas station was a Humble Station. Same company owned it when the name changed to Esso, then to Enco, and finally to Exxon. (Enco name didn't last long when they discovered it was a naughty word in another language.)

WIWAK, all the retail stores in town were actually located downtown.

WIWAK, actually when I got my first car, gas was 19.9 cents a gallon and I could never afford to fill it up.

WIWAK, we got our butts busted for climbing to the top of the windmill.

I am thinking I am the senior citizen in here. ;)

WIWAK "the beaver" was a little boy on a popular television show. :D

WIWAK girls had cooties, time stood still, fear was a foreign concept and friendship mattered.

WIWAK saturday morning cartoons were something we looked forward to.
