World of Sardon

I watch as Lucifine Falling leaves with the strange-looking man. I'll need to finish our conversation later, it seems.

I turn my attention to Kallisto. My entire demeanor becomes very solemn and serious, as if breaking extremely important but very bad news to her.

"I am grateful for your acceptance. But I sense that you do not quite understand what it means to be my Priestess. It means that you will lead those who worship me -- mostly by worshipping me yourself.

Kallisto, I must ask you with great seriousness. Are you truly willing to give me your faith, loyalty and love that only a Priestess has for her Diety?"

Because we need some Bad Guys!

<OOC>
He’s a bad, bad man…
I’ll play him, but he won’t be my primary character…

Dorin, Worshiper of Sardonica and Betrayer of Korinth

Name: Dorin
Species: Human
Age: Late 20’s
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 190

Dorin's Image:
a08673_bust_3.jpg

Abilities: Dorin is a consummate archer of unequalled skill. He is effectively the Goddess’ own hitman. He’s also a deadly, graceful knife fighter who wields knives of a strange black metal given to him by Sardonica. They poison with the tiniest of scratches. The poison can be negated by magical healing but not much else, (or whatever GM feels is appropriate…)

Weapons/Equipment: Bow and arrows, twin sacred knives, Wrack and Scourge, blessed by Sardonica. He still wears black leather armor similar to the Korinthian King’s Guard.

<IC>

Dessine, High Seat of Korinth:
Temple of the Night Mother, two months earlier…

Dorin casually dragged Marius, the High priest of the Night Mother, behind him. The body left a bloody streak down the white marble of the Night Mother’s desecrated temple.

That woman, he thought, he took the arrow for her…

Dorin dropped Marius. The dead weight of the priest’s body made a loud thump that echoed in the macabre silence of temple’s great hall. The once handsome Marius joined the rest of the dead priests and priestess on floor. They were a bloody testament to Dorin’s handy work, and the work of his men.

He was in the alcove—I saw them both duck in, but she wasn’t there...

The assassin priest looked around the temple as his men—Sardonica’s men—flooded the temple and claimed it as theirs. There was no place the woman could’ve hid. None. He was former King’s Guard, and he knew every inch of the Night Mother’s temple.

There was a gurgling noise coming from the pile of the Night Mother’s clergy and Dorin looked down.

“Luci…” Marius gurgled incoherently. “Lucifine…”

Dorin drew Scourge and knelt to the man.

“Is that your little friend?” Dorin said. “The woman you took the arrow for? Such a noble thing, yet so futile… Tell me where she went, priest and I promise, I’ll make her death swift.”

Marius’ eyes barely focused on the assassin above him.

“Dorin,” he uttered. “You… betrayed us!”

“Betrayal is such an ugly word, my Brother. But can you blame me for being so mercenary? I’m ensuring that I’ll end up on the winning side of all this. The Goddess has the upper hand and I intend to stay there with Her.”

Dorin roughly grabbed Marius by his long, black hair and jerked his head back. Scourge was at the priest’s throat…

“Where is the Shard, Marius?” he hissed, “Where is the woman Lucifine—did you give it to her?”

Marius only smiled a defiant, blood-stained smile.

“Gods and men will not stand for the heresy Sardonica has committed against the world… They won’t forget!”

Dorin scowled as he opened up Marius’ throat with his black bladed knife. He tossed the priest aside in disgust and wiped the blood off of Scourge with Marius’ robes.

There’s something familiar about that woman’s na—

--Dorin… a dark, feminine voice suddenly purred in his head. Have you found it? Have you found the Shard?

No, my Lady.

What of the priest, Marius? Sardonica snapped. Does he not have the Night Mother’s Shard?

No… But the priest may have given it to a woman called Lucifine. She may seek refuge amongst the rebels, that is if she makes it out of the mountains.

Find her; send word to your spies. I want her and I want that Shard! It’s not enough to silence worshipers my dear brother's lover. The Shard is Her essence and must be destroyed as well.

Yes, Lady.

And Dorin… Sardonica purred again. …there is a small matter of my darling brother, Maximus. His followers have been wiped out, but I need for you to finish him while he’s still mortal. Take care of him, and take care of the woman, Lucifine.

Dorin felt a lithe, feminine phantom body press against him.

I’ll see that you’re handsomely rewarded…

Yes. Dorin managed, enamored with the prospect of the Goddess’ generous offer. I won’t fail you...

Good—now go!

Dorin nodded to Sardonica’s voice as it faded from his head. He went to find one of his High Priests to dispatch order to his spies that he’d placed in some of the rebel cells some time ago. They could track down this Lucifine. He would deal with the matter of Sardonica’s brother himself.

Yeah--he's evil, but he's hot!

Also, I replied for Maddox/Lucifine. She's asking for a bath and a bottle of wine:D

"I see..." Lucifine chuckled softly for the first time in a very long time. "I'll keep that in mind, but I think I can handle him."

Laughter of any sort felt so strange on her lips...

"I'll see you and Falling in the morning. If you need me, don't hesitate to call on me."

Kallisto stared at her for a moment. There seemed to be something very different about this woman now that Maddox was right there. She raised an eyebrow as her head, unconsciously, perked to the side as if she was just a puppy trying to understand what was going on. She nodded. "I'll be around," she said.

She looked at Falling. Now what was all of this? "Wh-What do you mean?" She asked thinking that as a Priestess she was meant only to gather worshippers.

~~~Meanwhile~~~
Lucifine blushed slightly when she realized that her glance was rapidly drifting into more than that, and jerked her eyes forward to the treeline. She hoped Maddox hadn't caught her looking...
"So..." she said. "is it possible to get a bath? A bottle of wine, maybe?"
Maddox had noticed and he was trying not to smile. He knew that he was quite the impressive man and there were few women that could ignore him. Yes, he was a bit of an egomaniac but could he really be blamed? He was so used to getting attention that it would have been just strange not to have it.
He looked down at her and smiled. "Yes, I can get them both arranged for you," he said. He grew quiet as his imagination ran rampant. "Are you hungry? Maybe after you've had some time to yourself I could take you to get some supper," he suggested. He wasn't overly eager but he was more than willing to show her he was a confident man.
Lucifine looked up to the tall elf and returned his smile with a slight one of her own.
"I'd appreciate both very much." she said. "And I am a bit hungry--dinner would be nice..."
There was silence for a moment and Lucifine spoke:
"I didn't mean to stare." she said quietly. "It's just that I've never seen someone like you--an elf--before..."
Between her tiredness and her awkwardness around this man, she was was feeling a bit vulnerable, and she didn't like it. Lucifine sighed and shook her head slightly.
"Please forgive me, Maddox..."
Maddox nodded as they continued to walk and in his mind he was curious as to what had intrigued her so much as to make her stare, not that he minded... not at all. But then she spoke up and that made him look up, in mild surprise, at her. "I'm not terribly common in such cold climates," he said with a laugh.
Of course he was figuring that that was that.
He had not been troubled and she had explained it. He figured that with such a long journey she had to be exhausted. But then it came out.
"Please forgive me, Maddox..."
He smiled. "There's nothing to forgive," he said simply as he stopped at the barracks. "Here's where you can stay, I'll have them draw you a bath and I will personally get you a good bottle of wine," He promised.
Lucifine nodded and relaxed a bit more. Yes, she'd never seen the likes of his kind before, but it was far more than that. Maddox was both handsome and exotic, and by the looks of him, a capable fighter. It was a combination that was hard for her to resist...
She watched as Maddox gave a few short orders, and he was off, presumably for that bottle of wine. In moments, a tub was gathered, and she was led inside by steward of the barracks where he had a place set up for her to bathe.
Lucifine started to undo the the straps and buckles of black leather that ran from the high collar of her armor down to her shoulder and then the larger ones at the bottom of her cuirass. She idly wondered what Maddox thought of her, the odd ice woman from the North, and she wondered about who he was as well.
She stripped off her armor bit by bit, heedless of the steward's people who dumped bucket after bucket of hot water in the tub for her. They didn't seem to mind the half-naked Korinthian woman either and went about their business.
When they left her, she frowned at the steam that rose from the tub.
"Too hot..." she murmured and took off her gloves.
With a touch, she cooled it to luke warm in an instant. Lucifine slid into the small tub, and submerged herself as best as she could and closed her eyes.
"Maddox is rather charming" she sighed softly. "Isn't he?"
Gods help me. she thought. I hope this thing is only in my hands... If he tries to touch me...
Where Lucifine's hands rested, ice started to form and creep down the side of the tub...
Maddox had returned with enough time to enter the barracks and hear the charming comment. He chuckled and kneeled down next to her tub. "Yes, well I would hope that I would manage to be charming above all else Miss Lucifine," he said with that rougish smile.
He watched the ice forming and touched the bottle of wine against her hand to chill it. "And I brought somethings for you to sup on," he said motioning to the plate in his free hand. "I could feed you myself if you liked?" He said as he was sure that her hands would freeze her food.
Lucifine jumped and let out a small squeak of surprise at the elf who was suddenly at her side.
"Gods be good!" she uttered.
Her surprise gave way to a blush, that had more to do with Maddox having heard her comment, than her being in the tub next to him. She'd lived in a barracks before--there was no such thing as privacy for men or women of the King's Guard...
Frost surged over half the wine bottle when Maddox touched it to her hand, and Lucifine jerked her hands out of reach where she couldn't touch him or anything else...
Lucifine looked at the food and then at him. There was something about him feeding her that she secretly liked and that also nagged at her Korinthian pride.
"I'd be grateful if you could." she said softly, as she her hugged herself against an unseen chill. Her small, muscular arms partially hid a small starburst scar between her soft, pale breasts...
"Just be mindful of my hands..."
"My Priestesses must prove themselves intelligent and wise, so they can interpret and relay the message of my worship to their would-be followers," I reply simply. "Kallisto, you are wise and intelligent, perhaps more than you like to let on. What do you think I mean?"
I sigh, and waver on my legs. I feel very... tired all of a sudden.
"I must rest, Kallisto. Will you come lay with me and keep me warm?"
Now that's odd... How did I know that laying with someone will keep me warm?
He chuckled at that. He took a piece of fruit and carefully held it to her lips. He couldn't help but grin slightly at her. He had noticed the scar but he could not chance really looking at it without her thinking him a complete pervert.
"That is not the first thing ladies tell me to be mindful of Miss," he said with a rougish smile. "So tell me... Why do your hands do that?" I have met a few Korinthians in my day and I have never had the pleasure to meet one quite like you."
Kallisto was still thinking it over. Could this be something that she could really do? She was only a girl afterall. The wolf girl decided that it would be best if she could think this over.
"I will lay with you for tonight," she agreed as she began to lead the way to the barracks where she would be staying. There had not been a room for him anyway... no one had known he was going to be coming. And really she was surprised that they had had something available for Lucifine.
He chuckled at that. He took a piece of fruit and carefully held it to her lips. He couldn't help but grin slightly at her. He had noticed the scar but he could not chance really looking at it without her thinking him a complete pervert.
Lucifine bit off a piece of the offered fruit, shyly at first, and then more hungrily.
"That is not the first thing ladies tell me to be mindful of Miss," he said with a rougish smile. "So tell me... Why do your hands do that?" I have met a few Korinthians in my day and I have never had the pleasure to meet one quite like you.".
Lucifine's brow furrowed as she swallowed and she tried to gather her thoughts. For a moment, Maddox's flattery fell on deaf ears.
"My hands..." she said as she looked down at them. "I... don't know. After Korinth fell to Sardonica, I remember waking up somewhere face down in the snow. My hair had turned white and my eyes, this blue... Then things started happening--ice and snow started to obey my thoughts. The cold no longer bothered me... But my hands--whatever they touch, they freeze and I can't control it..."
She was silent and then:
"I never had an affinity for magic before this." Lucifine said quietly. "I always relied on Tempest, and before, Nyx..."
"No, Kallisto," I say, stopping in the middle of the camp. "You are a leader of men and women, and your actions will dictate much of my credibility to my potential, future worshippers. As such, you will lay with me all the time from now on. And, you will hold my hand as we walk, and you will kiss me now, here, and for everyone to see."
I don't know what's come over me; I'm astounded by the words that come out of my mouth. Why did I just say that?
I don't know why, but I know that Father would be so very proud of me right now...
I look expectanly at Kallisto, half expecting the wolfgirl to lash out at me in a defiant, outraged, indignant tirade.
Dorin, Present: Two days out from E'sari
<OOC>
If I remember correctly, Kallisto was thinking that there was a spy in her group. I’m going to run with that.
<IC>
Snow drifted softly through the air as men clad in black cloaks emerged into the clearing with Dorin in the lead. He raised his hand and gave the signal for them to fan out.
Dorin surveyed the clearing that was now covered in two days of new snow. There was nothing here to suggest there had been a camp of any kind.
This is the sight where the comet-fall was…He thought. Kaelis confirmed it in the message he sent on the winds.
The spy, a mage called Kaelis, had been planted sometime ago, and was traveling with a caravan of rebels. He’d recently taken on an apprentice to make himself look more convincing, but he hadn’t heard from the mage since he sent word about the blazing streak he saw in the sky.
That spark in the heavens—it had to be the brother, Maximus…
Dorin’s eyes narrowed at the prospect of slaying a fallen god, as he searched the camp for any clue of the caravan’s whereabouts. It seemed like prey that was too easy for him, and he disliked that. It wasn’t worthy of his time or talents.
If the Lady desires that I slay him, Dorin reminded himself. Then it must be done…
The assassin’s mind briefly turned to the woman Lucifine. He’d thought on her these past two months, and realized early on why her name was familiar. She was King’s Guard…
Not just any King’s Guard—she was a captain, and wore the black and red of the temple guard… Marius did something to her. He was dark-aspected—he could’ve spirited her away.
Dorin nodded to himself. He was sure now, more than ever that Marius had given her the Night Mother’s Shard, but she was still missing.
“Dorin!” one of his men called. “Here!”
Dorin broke out of his reverie and he went over to a tree where his man stood. He ran his hand over rough-cut mage’s runes carved into the bark.
E’sari
Dorin smiled triumphantly at the word in the tree. The mage had told him to look for a sign…
Well played, Kaelis. We’ll see you in E’sari, then.
Dorin’s men loomed like shadows in the hazy snowfall and he motioned for them to form up.
“We’re bound for E’sari.” He said. “When we arrive, we’ll see that the rebels sleep in hell…”
Dorin and his men silently slipped back into the brush like ghosts. It had been a long time since Wrack and Scourge had feasted on blood, and he looked forward to his prey…
There was that part of Kallisto that puffed up, her tail was actually already bristled up in indignation. Her ears were laid back in more than mild irritation. Kallisto was a sought after young woman and while she was not exactly in love with anyone it was a little difficult for her to fathom just kissing this man... this deity.
"You do realize that this will prove nothing?" She asked. "They will just think that I am to be married or have found a 'friend'..." She said.
Instead of pushing him away she moved in and caught his lips in her own. People would think she was crazy but if this was what a priestess was supposed to do... then that was what she would do.
She pulled away and looked up at him as if expecting him to say something.
Hey, he was trying to be helpful.
"Here," he said offering her a piece of a sandwich. "It's not nearly as easy to eat as the fruit but it's more substantial..." He said.
Lucifine took a bite of the corner of the sandwhich that Maddox offered her. Her lips brushed his fingers as she took it and blushed slightly at this seemingly innocent trespass.
She swallowed, and her brow furrowed slightly. There was a strange, cold twinge in her chest and her fingers brushed over the starburst scar...
He nodded but then he was sensing something strange from her. She had seemed to almost go quiet. Well, she seemed to be a very quiet girl but even this was pretty quiet for her, in the two or so hours he had known her.
"Is everything alright?"
Maddox's words sunk into Lucifine like sharp teeth, and she gripped the sides of the tub. Her thoughts and memories were a jumbled mess--she felt that stabbing pain again, felt Marius' arms around her, heard him whisper "I love you", and the blood... His blood was so bright on her pale hands before the darkness took her...
Did Marius... do something to me? What did he do to me!
"I'm sorry..." Lucifine whispered. "I can't--I shouldn't selfishly burden you with my grief. My situation is not unique. I'm not the only one who's lost some one to Sardonica..."
For a moment, it looked like the strong Korinthian woman might break, when she suddenly stood up in the tub. She stepped out and reached for the towel to dry herself off...
"You are wrong," I reply as I resume walking. "You just proved that you are the perfect choice to be my first Chosen Priestess."
Something she said suddenly evokes a thought that brings pause to my stride.
"You said that others would presume we were simply married or perhaps, friends of a sort... Have you ever been married before, or have many friends that you have been intimate with -- as you soon will be with me?"
I resume my stride, now deep in thought and musing out loud. I begin to feel a sense of... intense caring and affection that envelopes my entire being. I look over my shoulder at Kallisto, and notice that she is very beautiful...
"Hmmm... Perhaps we should get married? I think I would like that."
Suddenly, a crippling cold pain runs through my chest... It feels as if a spear of unbelievably cold ice just shot through me. I cough once, and red blood droplets spray from my mouth and turn to ice before they hit the ground. Puzzled, I look to Kallisto for answers, right before I fall to the ground and all goes black.
"Hey," he said taking the towel and wrapping it around her himself. "Like you said everyone has lost someone... It helps..." He said looking down at her. "You don't have to tell me you know... But I would like it if you would.... No one should have to bear such a burden by themselves..."
He was not trying to get into her pants... this was the side that Kallisto very rarely saw.
Kallisto started choking. "M-Married?" She asked looking mortefied. It's not that being married to him scared it wass just how quickly everything was happening. But then he suddenly fell to the ground beside her, blood flying from his mouth.
"Falling?" She gasped.
For a moment, Lucifine resisted Maddox's arms coming around her with the towel, before she slowly eased into his embrace. The tension ran out of her as she relaxed and accepted this man's comfort. Despite Kallisto's warning, Lucifine knew he was a good man all the same.
"There was a man--a High Priest of the Night Mother called Marius" Lucifine started. "I was in love with him for the longest time, but because of my duties to the King's Guard, I knew I couldn't be with him and I never knew how he felt... Then Sardonica came and the temple fell. Marius and I were the last to defend the temple, and I think... I think he took an arrow for me. I didn't know that he loved me until he lay dying in my arms."
Lucifine's voice trembled, and quiet tears rolled down her cheeks.
"He told me he loved me before everything went dark..."
