Aft Nacelle (discussion all things sci-fi)

Rise of Skywalker is a haphazard, but ultimately joyous and satisfying conclusion to forty-two years of Star Wars. :)

I think that's a fair sum up of the Ridley 3.

I love loads of elements in them
I love the general themes.

But at times they are bloody annoyingly stupid.

(Don't get me started on the first one!)

It was certainly the best of the 3.. but annoyingly dependent on recycling plots & iconic scenes from the Originals . But, overall visually entertaining.

Which means, lazy cash cow, instead of bright original storytelling. (Disney corp™®© can't allow that, the lawyers want to make money)

Did you see how the fans reacted when Rian Johnson decided to throw out the Star Wars playbook (TM) and give 'em something new? There might be a compelling essay in the idea of Star Wars essentially recycling its themes across generations, but to a viewer it just looks like creative entropy.

Still love all nine of those crazy films, though. :D

Haha. I stand corrected.

The evidence. Fan fiction. Specifically. 50 shades of fucking grey (although technically I've not read it, but I've read enough Dan Brown)

What's the first law of marketing. Give'em what they want. Leave'em wanting more.

Merry Christmas.

The Doctor is back on New Year's Day.

Have they put a foot wrong since Christopher Ecclestone?

I read quite a bit as a teen, and watched most of the shows until my 30s, when I got a little bit more into the science. Interstellar travel won't happen. Even Mars is out of human reach. The Kessler syndrome will wipe out all the satellites and that wraps up the human space age. Without space travel, there's really not much else in sci fi for many decades, but the field is opening now. I don't know how much that affects TV sci fi, since most of that is now on video subscription sites.

Hi.

Welcome

Erm.... Not quite sure what to say about your post.

Let me start with the obvious. Science fiction is a broad church. Tele, video, film, gaming, books, short story... But fundamentally it's, er, how do I say it, erm,,, it fiction.

Albeit the really good stuff, was well thought out, well researched, and therefore prescient. Nay prophetic.

I'll give you the interstellar travel.
I'd also agree that Mars is technically prohibitive due to unknown radiation issues... But therein lies the unknown. It's a one way ticket, but to say you're the first, plenty would sign up!!!

But to not dream is to die?

Push that boundary.

Do it, just because someone says you can't.

That's the indomitable spirit.

So... What we thinking about the new doctor who?

Writing seems marginally better than the last series but pt2 will tell. 3 companions still seems a bit much, and meta comment on Bradley's running commentary just drew attention to the problem rather than helped.

Jodie Whittaker still great. Her party outfit  I want. And yes, bowties are cool.

I'm enjoying the ensemble approach.

But given that I've not watched the other series seriously I shouldn't comment.

Jodie's a perfect doctor. Giving no quarter. Zero violence but menacing confidence.

Worth the year to wait ? Let's see in part 2.

JW’s Party outfit was ❤️❤️❤️. Episode felt like it had a lot more pace, that it was aiming for something ... and it did. Agree: three companions is a bit much, BW’s running mouth is a little off putting, think it’s attempts at non Doctor comic relief but misses mark.

High hopes for next episode. I’m avoiding spoilers as I’m a day behind on watching the episode and saw a tweet from BBCDW feed that kinda spoiled the episode for me.

Have you heard the term science FICTION? There’s a clue in the second word. Fiction. You know: the stuff that isn’t real.

HG Wells was writing about Martian invasion at about the same time as the motor car was invented. If you want to consider the various readings of that work, it’s not just fear of invaders from another world: Haskin’s ‘53 version of the film is dripping in post war/Cold War hysteria, Spielberg’s ‘05 version borrows from the events of 11th September.

Erm MacDonald, astrophysicist, has been appointed as a science specialist on the crew of ST: Discovery. She was inspired by Trek to study astrophysics and is now living the dream of explaining the possibilities to a wider audience.

SF gives writers the opportunity to take real world problems and put them in an unreal world setting.

Is time travel possible . Lots of story arcs have an ancient form. Not time travel, apparently invented single handedly by H.G.

Fiction writers say it's not possible.
Scientists says 'who knows what's in the future!'

Greg Grunberg.

Been in SatrWars and StarTrek.

I should Google anyone else who's in both...

Anything cool on TV besides the Witcher and Dracula? I need something to watch by myself..

Simon Pegg (Kelvin Timeline ST and does voice in SW:TFA)

He's the trader Rey barters with in first film (just remembered... He's a huge fan and begged for a part... the point being you can't tell it's him... I think Daniel Craig is a fan andxwas a stone trooper)

Well, I kinda meant other than porn.. but I mean...

GoT was superb.

What do you mean other than porn...
Actually far doo's it's usually difficult to watch it with your Mum...
But your Mum doesn't seem to mind...

(I'm soo soo sorry... You're a guest in my thread and I've been rude)

Indeed. Apparently, he’s the one that Rey manipulates by Jedi mind trick.

Would have been awesome to have Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in ROS. Paul is ultimate nerd porn.

I’ve tried GoT. Most people are know are into it, bestowing upon me its awesomeness. I borrowed the first three seasons, and could not get to grips with it.
