It's basically a search engine for face photos. I tested it out and it seems to be pretty good at finding pictures - it's capable of recognising a match even with different clothes, hair, and make-up.
I am not sure what sites its search capability currently covers, but you can probably assume that within a few years it'll be possible to search across pretty much every publicly viewable photo.

This is a very good and important reminder, thank you.
I don't use Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or any other social media platform where people usually have their name and an identifiable face pic. So for myself I'm not so worried at least for now, but I don't think that's the case for most people.

I would not worry too much about this, at least not yet. I just run my selfie through it and got 6 possible matches. 4 of them are boys somewhere between 20 and 30 y.o. Tne other two are girls 14 to 25. Well, they might be my kids, sure, but not me
Second time, with a selfie from couple days ago, I got all females, but...one of them was a cartoon character!

And yes, that is the same person. Even with a few false positives, that's good enough to be dangerous. If it didn't recognise a picture of you, it's possible that it doesn't yet have any real pictures of you in its archive to match against.
