U.S. politics isolation tank

Not a knockout. But Barack bloodied him, and bit off an ear.

Fiery, effective closing statement.

David Gergen really is a whore.

Obama was really strong. I think that format suited him well. Not so much for Romney -- to me, he seemed awkward and pissy.

You really hate Gergen, don't you? An ex? ;)

I agree on the format. Obama isn't Bubba when working a room, but he can at least relate to people on some level. Romney has shades of GHWB on that part.

But I think they both came in girded for war, and as David Brooks said: The strategy was "who could dominate the room. So the winner was just the alpha male."

I liked him in '08 -- I'm shocked how worthless he is now.

It's interesting -- they both were pretty comfortable being in the other's personal space, kwim? Like they both almost walked up to each other and basically said, you want some?? And neither flinched.

Yes. Both knew exactly what the strategy would be: You suck and I am gonna win.

Also, your mother smelled of elderberries.

I'm pleased that Obama challenged New Romney on his assertions. No one ever won a debate by just assuming the audience would realize his opponent was pulling stuff out of his ass.

My favorite was a two-parter. Part 1 was a riff on the Hillary Texting meme where she's texting, "Where's my binder?" and the Prez replies in the second image: "You're flying in it."

I love the creativity that can be unleashed by these small cultural explosions. I used to be all down on the fact that with the microslicing of news and culture, there would be fewer common experiences and reference points. No nightly news, or last episode of a beloved TV show that EVERYONE got. But stuff like this, and the viral nature of social media in general, make me realize that humans will always find a way to create connections that span the whole culture.

Stu Bykofsky: Sorry, Mitt, I just don't know you that well

ON MONDAYS, Wednesdays and Fridays, I like Mitt Romney's policies. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, not so much, because he reverses what he said the day before. Sundays he refuses to give any specifics about his policies.

Half the time, I like Barack Obama's policies. When I don't, at least I know what they are.

Democrats rabidly call Romney a liar, but he's just playing politically smart hardball. He can attack Obama on his policies while not having to defend his own because they change faster than a runway model changes her dress.

It may be smart politics, but he's asking me to buy a pig in a poke and I don't eat pork.

Romney says, in effect, "Trust me." I'm sure he knows that Ronald Reagan said, "Trust, but verify."

Romney family buys voting machines through Bain Capital investment

Tagg Romney, the son of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, has purchased electronic voting machines that will be used in the 2012 elections in Ohio, Texas, Oklahoma, Washington and Colorado.

"Late last month, Gerry Bello and Bob Fitrakis at FreePress.org broke the story of the Mitt Romney/Bain Capital investment team involved in H.I.G. Capital which, in July of 2011, completed a "strategic investment" to take over a fair share of the Austin-based e-voting machine company Hart Intercivic," according to independent journalist Brad Friedman.

But Friedman is not the only one to discover the connection between the Romney family, Bain Capital, and ownership of voting machines.

Truth out reports:

"Through a closely held equity fund called Solamere, Mitt Romney and his wife, son and brother are major investors in an investment firm called H.I.G. Capital. H.I.G. in turn holds a majority share and three out of five board members in Hart Intercivic, a company that owns the notoriously faulty electronic voting machines that will count the ballots in swing state Ohio November 7. Hart machines will also be used elsewhere in the United States.

In other words, a candidate for the presidency of the United States, and his brother, wife and son, have a straight-line financial interest in the voting machines that could decide this fall's election. These machines cannot be monitored by the public. But they will help decide who "owns" the White House."

Oyyyyyyyy!

And I wonder how many voters will heed *his* suggestion on who to vote for in the upcoming election (last paragraph of the complete story {linked})?

Bodenweiser indicted on sex charges

A Georgetown man who suspended his campaign for state Senate earlier this month was indicted today on 113 felonies charging him with sexual abuse of a child.

A Sussex County grand jury issued an indictment for Eric Bodenweiser on 39 counts of first degree unlawful sexual intercourse and 74 counts of second-degree unlawful sexual contact.

The rest of the story, as usual, is at the link in the headline.

Debate: Obama talks with authority. He likes foreign policy, and is clearly comfortable discussing it.

Romney: I like what he said. Also, freedom!
