Firstly, thank you all for your answers! I’ve found them so interesting and validating.

I think the actual feeling of chemistry is so hard to define. It’s a “know it when you see it” thing and it feels a little different with everyone. A lot of people have said it’s a certain ease or a desire or need. It can feel like all that for me but just like the name implies - chemistry feels like science, like lightning. And once you’re struck by it, it’s very difficult to settle for anything less.

I think it’s just a meeting of the minds. There are people with whom I’ve disagreed about very fundamental things but there is a chemistry there. It’s intoxicating and addictive - platonically or sexually. I almost think finding friendship chemistry is more exciting for me.

Chemistry isn’t always reciprocal and that’s a bit how this topic started - with a discussion of one person seemingly feeling a lot of chemistry and the other just not feeling it. Trying to force it always feels awful. The only thing worse is feeling an initial spark only to pursue it and find that a spark was all it was.

Chemistry is important to long lasting relationships. That “I can’t get enough of you” feeling is a building block of a long lasting connection

Though I've seen in make it's appearance in the form of one sided crushes and obsessive behavior without reciprocation, I've been thinking about it and I've never experienced one-sided chemistry (as the person who feels the chemistry interested in a person who does not).

So, I was thinking about it, and I think it's because "mutual interest in each other" is, for me, the foundational starting point for chemistry. I might be attracted to, or interested in, someone, but prettily quickly if they don't show interest in me, I move on.

Are there certain professions that attract you? Do you notice an employment trend in your past partners/lovers? Do you have any unexpected turn ons?

I've got two. Nurses for sure. And I get the cliche reasons why, but for me I honestly think a huge part is the scrubs. For whatever reason they are really sexy.

My other would be drive thru girls. This can be both baristas at coffee stands but also girls at fast food places. I definitely am turned on by voice and I think that is part of it but also you get those few moments and it feels like speed dating where you have one minute to check them out physically but also to make a good impression - and so do they. There is something fun and sexy about that to me.

Having thought about it - I don't have any profession related fetishes. Looking back on past significant relationships I count: a water-resources professional, a psychiatrist, a lawyer, a trust-funder, and a paralegal. They were all strong-willed and successful (both in their professions and in their personal lives). I don't know if it counts, but I guess the pattern there is successful, independent, and strong-willed, which are traits that exist in any profession.

There are two professions that I approach with an automatic caution light - bartenders and career waitresses - not from any negative experiences on my own, but drawing from relationships of friends that ended badly, precisely because of the nature of the profession. Maybe that would count as a negative fetish.

Vets, plumbers, and undertakers....no. My personal cliche is having the hots for my UPS guy. I used to date a UPS guy, and ever since then, I have been checking them out with potential lust in my eyes. It would be worth it to hook up to get them to tell me sexy work stories. They ALL have at least a few.

Not a profession, exactly, because none of them do it for a living. But I find I am attracted to men who play piano/keyboards. Most of the men I've dated seem to play. And sometimes I don't even know until after I start dating them. Weird.
