❓ PLP Inquires II ❓

I’ll add that I think it’s far more destructive and hurtful when you grow toxic enough to recognize your partner’s love languages and without THAT. That’s like some end boss level shit.

Much better to just grow outta being toxic when you can.
I'm not sure I understand? Will you say a little more?

It’s a bad thing to withhold the things you think are valuable and important. It’s next level bad to withhold things you know your partner values and needs,

If, for example, I don’t particularly care about acts of service but I know my partner does and I don’t do something I normally would specifically because I know it’ll hit them where it hurts…that’s some extra toxic shit.

Gotcha!! I agree when it's done as a punishment or a 'fuck you'. Thanks for explaining.

Let's talk about a theory I recently read about toxic traits!

The theory posed that your toxic trait is the opposite of your love language. (I know everyone doesn't ascribe to the 5 Love Languages thing, and I agree, but we are going to work slightly within that framework for this discussion.) As an example -

LL=Acts of Service -then- TT=Not asking for help
LL=Quality Time -then- TT=Isolation
LL=Physical Touch -then- TT=Avoidance
LL=Words of Affirmation -then- TT=Going silent
LL=Being Understood or Seen -then- TT=Withholding information
LL=Gifts -then- TT=Overspending

My question - Does this ring true to you? If not, why not? If so, why? Would you care to share you love language and if it correlates to a toxic trait? Do you put up road blocks to make people prove their love for you? Or are you arms wide open?

Guilty.
I am an Acts of Service guy, but I an not good at asking for help at all.
I don't actively put up roadblocks, but I think because I try to be Uber-self-sufficient it can cause this to happen.

What does it say about you if you are bad at all of them?
AFAF.

I don't agree

I wouldn't say toxic, but I am a human being and not always in a good mood.

Sometimes I get grouchy when I first walk in the door and she is on top of me. Most times I am OK, but sometimes I need about 5 minutes to get settled after a rough day.

If I am on a mission ( meaning have a lot to do ), I am zoned in on completing these tasks, so If she's in the way or on top of me, I get mad and let her know it. I feel bad about it and right after, work it out and give lots of love.

I very rarely argue in my real life relationship, I had been verbally non sexual aggressive twice in over 10 years, I was mean.

I never deny or withhold any form of love.

My love language is, love by actions and taking care of her in every way I can.

Every day there's kisses and verbally saying Love you, adding a pet name at the end, multiple times a day

In your opinion, what movie should never be remade?
What movie has been remade that absolutely shouldn't have been?

Do not touch Back to the Future. That one is sacred.

Pointless remakes: where to begin? The string of John Carpenter remakes were mostly pretty pointless. A PG-13 version of The Fog? I mean why? Then there's stuff like the Point Break remake.

I'm weirdly okay with remakes but it can be risky. Best case we get a fresh and interesting spin on something. Worst case it's quickly forgotten and we still got the old one.

As NRJ said, most of the remakes that have been made should never have been made.
But then, sometimes, you get The Thing, or The Blob, both great remakes.

I think the best idea is to find an obscure movie that had potential but sucked and remake it the right way, rather than the more cynical approach that Hollyjerks take which is to exploit a “name recognition” movie.

To answer your question, King Kong, Halloween and Jaws should never be remade.

Oh wait,! 😢

Movies that should never be remade... anything starring Julie Andrews. We'll never do better than her. They'd better keep their paws off The Sound of Music.

And the award for most unnecessary remake goes to... Gus Van Sant's 1998 remake of "Psycho." No one asked for this, no one wanted this, no one liked this.

It wasn't awful, I even kind of liked it, but the Robocop remake didn't really do much, didn't add much, it had a few cool scenes and that was it.
The Lion King remake was so fucking cynical. And lost the emotions of the original.

Just stop doing remakes of films. Stop it. I find it hard to see it as much more than creative bankruptcy unless there's something really really fresh and new in your take.

Any classic movie is classic for a reason. Those mentioned above ^ Sound Of Music, Psycho, Star Wars Jaws. I would Se7en, Shawshank, Steel Magnolais and Fried Green Tomatoes off the top of my head.

I hated that they remade The Color Purple. I can quote huge sections of that movie and I just can't mentally handle another interpretation.

A movie I can't wait for the remake of is The Dark Tower series. The recent movie was such hot garbage that I turned it off after 20 mins. But I'm so hopeful for Mike Flanagans version. He can do no wrong in my book.

Oof. The recent Dark Tower was baaaad.

But I do enjoy Mike Flanagan. I'm not a horror guy at all, but I like most of his work. He seems to be more creepy than gory. I'm okay with that.
It's horror with heart. Midnight Mass may be one of my favorite pieces of media ever.

I care not at all about remakes. Do what you like. Grab that cash or recontextualize for a younger different audience. I don’t care.

I do ask that you make it easy to find the original via search engines though. Change the name slightly or sumthin. Don’t put a number in place of a letter though. And don’t pull a Lucas and make it impossible to watch the originals.

This is a good point. Remakes fail (usually) and become forgotten, but the search doesn’t forget and I don’t want to always have to point out “the original” in every movie conversation or search.

The Thing is a classic indeed. And The Blob is a solid and fun remake. Crazy underrated even. So yeah, updates CAN work, but too much of the time they're just blatant cash-ins and that's no fun.

Godfather 1 and 2, no way to stand up to the greatness, these actors masterfully performed.

Terminator 1 and 2, without Arnold you couldn't replicate the spirit.

Braveheart is another movie, too difficult to live up to.

What movie has been remade that absolutely shouldn't have been?
So many, but Nightmare on Elm Street should have never been touched. Robert Englund is irreplaceable as Freddy Krueger.

How suggestible do you think you are? We all have that part of our lizard brain that is somewhat susceptible to things like suggestion and advertising. There’s tons of psychological testing that goes into things like what colors make you hungry and what music makes you want to spend money. Do you think you fall for it? Do you see a commercial for a delicious cheese pizza and then find yourself craving one?

What about sexually? Do you find you’re always down and ready or is your desire a little more responsive? Do you need to see the sexy thing or hear the sexy talk to feel like ripping off your clothes? What kind of things will spark your desire when before you may not have felt that squirmy?
