In your opinion, what movie should never be remade?
What movie has been remade that absolutely shouldn't have been?
Movies that should never be remade... anything starring Julie Andrews. We'll never do better than her. They'd better keep their paws off The Sound of Music.

And the award for most unnecessary remake goes to... Gus Van Sant's 1998 remake of "Psycho." No one asked for this, no one wanted this, no one liked this.

It wasn't awful, I even kind of liked it, but the Robocop remake didn't really do much, didn't add much, it had a few cool scenes and that was it.
The Lion King remake was so fucking cynical. And lost the emotions of the original.

Just stop doing remakes of films. Stop it. I find it hard to see it as much more than creative bankruptcy unless there's something really really fresh and new in your take.

Any classic movie is classic for a reason. Those mentioned above ^ Sound Of Music, Psycho, Star Wars Jaws. I would Se7en, Shawshank, Steel Magnolais and Fried Green Tomatoes off the top of my head.

I hated that they remade The Color Purple. I can quote huge sections of that movie and I just can't mentally handle another interpretation.

A movie I can't wait for the remake of is The Dark Tower series. The recent movie was such hot garbage that I turned it off after 20 mins. But I'm so hopeful for Mike Flanagans version. He can do no wrong in my book.

Oof. The recent Dark Tower was baaaad.

But I do enjoy Mike Flanagan. I'm not a horror guy at all, but I like most of his work. He seems to be more creepy than gory. I'm okay with that.
It's horror with heart. Midnight Mass may be one of my favorite pieces of media ever.

I care not at all about remakes. Do what you like. Grab that cash or recontextualize for a younger different audience. I don’t care.

I do ask that you make it easy to find the original via search engines though. Change the name slightly or sumthin. Don’t put a number in place of a letter though. And don’t pull a Lucas and make it impossible to watch the originals.

This is a good point. Remakes fail (usually) and become forgotten, but the search doesn’t forget and I don’t want to always have to point out “the original” in every movie conversation or search.

As NRJ said, most of the remakes that have been made should never have been made.
But then, sometimes, you get The Thing, or The Blob, both great remakes.

I think the best idea is to find an obscure movie that had potential but sucked and remake it the right way, rather than the more cynical approach that Hollyjerks take which is to exploit a “name recognition” movie.

To answer your question, King Kong, Halloween and Jaws should never be remade.

Oh wait,! 😢
The Thing is a classic indeed. And The Blob is a solid and fun remake. Crazy underrated even. So yeah, updates CAN work, but too much of the time they're just blatant cash-ins and that's no fun.

Godfather 1 and 2, no way to stand up to the greatness, these actors masterfully performed.

Terminator 1 and 2, without Arnold you couldn't replicate the spirit.

Braveheart is another movie, too difficult to live up to.

What movie has been remade that absolutely shouldn't have been?
So many, but Nightmare on Elm Street should have never been touched. Robert Englund is irreplaceable as Freddy Krueger.

How suggestible do you think you are? We all have that part of our lizard brain that is somewhat susceptible to things like suggestion and advertising. There’s tons of psychological testing that goes into things like what colors make you hungry and what music makes you want to spend money. Do you think you fall for it? Do you see a commercial for a delicious cheese pizza and then find yourself craving one?

What about sexually? Do you find you’re always down and ready or is your desire a little more responsive? Do you need to see the sexy thing or hear the sexy talk to feel like ripping off your clothes? What kind of things will spark your desire when before you may not have felt that squirmy?

I think my words are taking serious, but people don't blindly follow me. I don't want people to follow me, I've led before and it has consequences for the future. I like taking control of situations and specific women sexually, but not a group.

Mostly no, but there are times I buy things with skepticism. I don't 100% fall for it, but hope the commercial is correct. These commercials are usually advertise something that makes my life easier.

Colors don't influence me craving of foods.

Do you see a commercial for a delicious cheese pizza and then find yourself craving one?
Mostly no, but sometimes hearing someone talk about food or smelling gets me craving it. I usually wait for the weekend or following weekend to satisfy this craving

What about sexually?
Most men including me are very visual. I could be thinking about paying bills and if I see something undeniably sexy, it stops everything I'm doing for a couple minutes. Later within a week, if I'm lucky I can live out my fantasy with a woman or jerk off furiously, tearing skin.

Do you find you’re always down and ready or is your desire a little more responsive?
A mixture, more times than not I initiated it and hunted her down. I always liked being seduced and at those moments I am mostly responsive.

Do you need to see the sexy thing or hear the sexy talk to feeling like ripping off your clothes?
Mostly yes, it's visual and it creates a fantasy in my mind, then my body follows suit. Other times innocent statements and questions come up and I take it to a super pervy level, then my body follows suit.

What kind of things will spark your desire when before you may not have felt that squirmy?
A beautiful ass, a long hug lol, a soft voice, beautiful breasts, sexy abs, shapely legs, vampire movies, gymnastics, tennis, seeing her suck on a chicken bone and hearing her struggle.

So the answer is - we're all more suggestible than we'd like to think, broadly speaking.

Is it super obvious all the time? No, it's not always "ooh pizza advert, better get a pizza!". But advertising and propaganda and all that stuff work. We are shaped by what we see, what we experience, who we interact with, and if we'd had a different series of experiences and media exposures and social interactions before now we'd likely be extremely different people.

I think I have reverse suggestibility. When I know someone wants me to do something I tend to not want to do it. I have avoided products that annoy me with commercials and I’m not one to go along to get along. I never really minded peer pressure. It has the opposite affect on me.

Now, of course, if I drive past a Burger King and smell that blast of cooking oil I immediately want a burger, but that has more to do with a biological reaction than an advertising one.

Sexually, I am totally under the influence of boobies.
Basically every element of a woman—smell, touch, visual, all of it, makes me horny.

Sex doesn’t sell with me, in that, putting boobs next to a car doesn’t make me want to buy that car, but it does make me want to lick and fondle those boobs. 🤷‍♂️

So ….. This is the rare question I ask so that I can answer (and maybe get some advice)
I get teased often because I am VERY susceptible to suggestions. I don’t even realize it but I’ll crave a food that I barely saw on a commercial. The Golden Girls are drinking OJ? I want OJ. If you hum a bar of a song, I’ll have it stuck in my head for a week. I pick up on people’s emotions (good and bad) and they affect my emotions. I don’t think I’m a particularly sensitive person unless it’s something like this. It can be frustrating.

On the plus side, my desire (while usually present) is extremely responsive. I can not have sexy times on the mind and the right person can say the right thing and all engines are a go. I know partners (male ones specifically) get a little frustrated that I’m not more of an initiator or that they might have to put in the tiniest amount of effort to crank my engine but once revved my engine purrs like a kitten.

So suggestibility … blessing and curse.

I'm the same way in that my desire is very responsive. Flirting with little actions or words get me going much more than a Cold start.....it's probably why trying for kids wasn't as exciting to me a as I imagined it would be because it felt scheduled and routine.

I'm very susceptible to suggestion. There's certainly some advertising that just leaves me cold that makes me want nothing to do with a product or activity (Yes, I know I'm a middle-aged white dude in America, but that doesn't mean I want a gun, a truck, or "tactical" everything). I don't think I spend more because a store is playing certain music or painted a certain color. Most of the time I'm in a store for a particular thing, I get that thing, and I get out. No fuss.

BUT.

If I'm putzing around online and I see an ad for something related to an interest that I already have... then yes, I will be interested in that product. That's how I wound up with a whole bunch of pins on my workbag that say things like, "Mental Health is Punk AF" and "Talk Nerdy to Me," and a Pride flag that says "Free Dad Hugs." It's also how I wound up with dozens of Funko Pops of various characters from TV shows we like. We're not collectors in the sense that we're expecting them to appreciate in value and pay for our kids' college someday. We just like the characters and they make the little dopamine dispensers in our brains go, 'PING!'. None of these things were on any shopping list, yet they still found their ways into our house.

Also... "delicious cheese" is an oxymoron. I'll drown out the nasty taste of the cheese with extra sausage and pepperoni, pleaseandthankyou.

Also, now I want pizza.

10 years ago I was always down and ready. These days I need a little more warming up. That said, it doesn't take much. Seeing the sexy thing, hearing the sexy talk, dreaming the sexy dream, thinking the sexy thought... I'm probably a little more of a visual person, but the right words said in the right tone can certainly get me going too. Intent and enthusiasm matters. A porn actress saying a line from a script intended for millions of people is fine. But those same words from someone who's saying them just for me... that's pure magic. I'll respond to just about anything as long as it's from a place of personal desire.

Most men including me are very visual. I could be thinking about paying bills and if I see something undeniably sexy, it stops everything I'm doing for a couple minutes. Later within a week, if I'm lucky I can live out my fantasy with a woman or jerk off furiously, tearing skin.
Ouch! May I suggest coconut oil?
Mostly yes, it's visual and it creates a fantasy in my mind, then my body follows suit. Other times innocent statements and questions come up and I take it to a super pervy level, then my body follows suit.

Lol I love the correlation between vampires, tennis, and chicken bones ;)
Is it super obvious all the time? No, it's not always "ooh pizza advert, better get a pizza!"
See... this feels like bragging ;)
I think I have reverse suggestibility. When I know someone wants me to do something I tend to not want to do it.
I'm very much this way with influencer culture. If I know someone's trying to pretend to use something just to sell it that just annoys me.
Sexually, I am totally under the influence of boobies.
Aren't we all?
I'm the same way in that my desire is very responsive. Flirting with little actions or words get me going much more than a Cold start.....it's probably why trying for kids wasn't as exciting to me a as I imagined it would be because it felt scheduled and routine.
I remember that routine feeling and there's nothing less sexy. Feeling wanted will always warm me up.
I'm very susceptible to suggestion. There's certainly some advertising that just leaves me cold that makes me want nothing to do with a product or activity (Yes, I know I'm a middle-aged white dude in America, but that doesn't mean I want a gun, a truck, or "tactical" everything).
This ties into my next questions about algorithms.

I hate you for this. ;)

There are more introspective questions in the works here at PLP Inquires. We have a mission to not only have fun. silly questions but also promote the thoughtful, important conversations which seem to be in short supply around here lately. But until then ---

I heard a theory that all the best couples are made of one "golden retriever" person and one "black cat" person. No we aren't talking about furries! We are talking about personality types. The theory goes that two golden retrievers would too chaotic, impulsive and untethered that would eventually be off putting to the wider world. While two black cats would brew a kind of introverted, negativity and meaness that eventually ... would be off putting to the wider world.
The idea is a kind of opposites attract mentality. Do you agree or disagree? Are you more of a golden retriever or black cat? Do you tend to attract a type? How has that worked out so far? Also, do you think this could apply to friendships as well? And do you think personality types change depending on the relationship type?

I’m Team Golden all the way.

Although I have had girlfriends that were cat people, it never worked out.

I am, however, attracted to dog women. So . . .🤷‍♂️

Personality types can/do change (I think) in relationships. At least to a point. I think good relationships help define each others strengths and weaknesses and we make up for each other’s weaker spots. Maybe?

It's a tough one. I slobber and drool, so very Golden Retrieverish in that respect, but I also have a strong independent streak, so cattish.
I'm attracted to straight talking, no bullshit taking women who like to have their chests rubbed and their bellies tickled but who don't mind bringing me my slippers. So again, a bit of both. 😉😋

My partners have vary wildly in personality and no, I don't think this theory of golden retriever and black cat holds. I think there are far too many types of people to categorise into just two.

Now, does my personality type change? Absolutely not, I'm the same me regardless. However, different people will absolutely connect more strongly with different facets of me, so the dynamics will be very different. And that's kind of beautiful.
