Day 2: A song from a Canadian artist

I will never forget the date, because it was such a moving experience. June 15, 2015. Went to see the Real McKenzie‘s at a tiny little theater in the middle of nowhere eastern PA on a Monday night. It was like a punk show from long ago, maybe 30 or 40 people.

First band was good, the McKenzie‘s came on and threw it into high gear. Drunkenness, moshing, kilts, more drunkenness, the Scottish Canadian frontal (they were wearing kilts). More mayhem, hard-core, and punk from every which way, a little more drinking…

McKenzie’s took the stage for their encore. No electrical instruments, just a drummer, and the four remaining members (one with a bodhran), singing, harmonies and singing this song.

It was beautiful, and chilling. A great way to wind down a crazy night. My wife actually cried a bit.

I asked them if they want to just crash at our place that night, just like the old days, when touring bands just stayed at people’s houses, but alas, they had a show in Cleveland the next day and were headed West. We were in Jersey and that would take them out of their way.

This recorded version will never do it justice as we heard it live that Monday night several years ago…

Day 2: A song from a Canadian artist

A bunch of hardcore punk rockers come together to make a band. Of course, they crank out four outstanding albums of quiet and powerful introspection.

"Wait for the year to drown
Spring forward, fall back down
I'm trying not to wonder where you are"

"Left and Leaving," The Weakerthans

Great choice. I stumbled on old vinyl copy of that record awhile back. Good listen.

Love this! Sounds like a fantastic memory to cherish 🖤

Day 2- A song from a Canadian artist

Really surprised that no one has gone with KD Lang, one of the great voices from any country. I've gone with her singing Hallelujah, from the opening of the Olympics, simply stunning.
Absolutely the best version of this song 🖤
