Saturday: cheat day - what’s your guilty pleasure? Do you take cheat days? What is on your cheat food list?

Saturday: cheat day - what’s your guilty pleasure? Do you take cheat days? What is on your cheat food list?
All the times I've exercised I've alway took Saturday and Sunday off. To rest, heal and do other fun stuff. So when I've started now again that will not change. Sometimes it is some sort of exercise like garden work (not so fun but satisfying when done), a walk in the forrest or something like that.

I don't think I can choose one thing as my guilty pleasure. I like good food and good beer or wine. I have a soft spot for a well made cocktail though.

Favorite cocktail?

I am trying 1 workout on the weekend. It can be more leisurely compared to being rushed during the work week.

I like to get an easier, but longer run in on the weekends. It just allows for more time to not rush.

Guilty pleasures though? I love a great burger. If I'm making them at home, I'll try to do some things to make it healthier, but if I see one on the menu, or worse, the restaurant says it's their specialty? It's happening.

I try not to do the cheat day thing, I'm more of the mindset that I should not have big swings in what I'm eating, but I think of you tracked intake on a graph, Saturday would likely win. It's just the day I'm more likely to have a beer or go out for a burger (or both). Or a Manhattan if we're doing the cocktail thing.

Favorite cocktail? Hmmm.....in the winter a Manhattan is my go to drink. In the summer it's harder to pick one. I have several I like. But an ice cold Margarita on a hot summer day by the bbq is very good.

Manhattans, huh. I’ve had “manhattans” that my FIL made for me but I don’t think they are real manhattans. They seemed pretty sweet. I should try a proper one.

In the winter/fall, I’m a fan of old fashioneds. In the winter I’ve had them where they had cranberry bitters and a sprig of rosemary. That was a nice spin.

In the summer, a nice Hendricks and tonic is very tasty.

However, all that being said, I feel like I got into a bad habit during Covid - a little too lax with the wine, etc. so now I’m really not drinking much these days. Plus, empty calories. But it’s a nice treat every now and again.

I do like an old fashioned, as well.

I prefer a Manhattan with bourbon, so for me there usually is a little bit of sweetness there (though I think there can be with others)... so it might have been!

What’s your guilty pleasure? Probably the occasional cold one 🍺 while watching the Braves play (Sorry SB 😬) or after mowing the grass.

Do you take cheat days? I do about two to three cheat meals spread out over the week. Never a whole day, doesn’t usually end well.

What is on your cheat food list? Cheeseburgers, a big ribeye steak, and Blue Bell vanilla bean ice cream 🍨

I like an Old Fashioned too. Especially when I'm cooking.
The sweetness in a Manhattan can be adjusted with the Angostura bitter, and of course the amount of sweet vermouth. It should be 2 parts burbon to 1 part sweet vermouth and two to six dashes of Angostura bitter depending on the amount of the other ingredients.

A well made Gin and Tonic is always welcome on a hot summer day! :)

Happy Sunday, Sweaters!

We are in the home stretch! It’s the last week of August, so only a few more days of this challenge. Well, officially— you can keep going if you’re in the groove or you’ve discovered that this format works for you. I encourage you to be thinking about what has worked for you, and if you’will be incorporating it into your fitness journey.

Sunday: Since we are in the home stretch, let’s talk about stretching. Do you stretch as part of your workout routine? Or do you skip it? Do you think it helps? Show a picture of some of your go-to stretches. (Doesn’t have to be you- it can just be off of a website). Do you stretch before or after your workout?

Stretching is something I've always needed but never do enough. I'm as flexible as a fridge. But I try, really I do. And when I stretch properly I totally feel the difference and my running is softer and more relaxed.
My routine is I warm up, stretch my legs, thighs and calves, start running and then stretch my whole body after training.

It feels good to be making gains again. Someone told my trainer I was looking toned (which for me….eh) and strong. I gained some weight on medicine and looking for the OK to switch things up so I can go back to losing. Cancer treatment has triggered my old eating disorder patterns - but at least I recognize them.

I’m also looking forward to school starting so I can maybe get two spin classes a week in instead of one. That’s good for my mental health, I think, to be around friends in that setting.

I never stretch. It’s bad. I’m terrible for not. I hate it. And I pay the price. And girl.

I do stretch. Seems more and more the older I get, but post pre and post, though I don't after sports (and should).
Do you think it helps?
100%. If I could give 20 year old me a piece of advice it would be to buy Apple stock. If I could give two, it would be that and stretch.

Stretching.

So, there is no hiding it.. I kinda love yoga (among all the other types of training).
Therefore, yeah.. I stretch, a lot.

I think it helps, it helps with lower back pain (often caused by having way too tight hips!) , Neck pains.. stiffness, generally I find that most of these "stiff body pain" ailments can be eased by a gentle stretching routine.

When stretching, deeper does not mean better! If it hurts, you have gone too far and need to back off a bit.
Building muscles and endurance, yes! That is uncomfortable and will hurt.
But stretching, there you need to find the Goldilocks place "not too much, not too little".

I generally start my workouts with some dynamic stretching.
And will end them with some longer holds, calming my parasympathetic nervous system and just.. breathe.

Stretching is the best part to keep the body in shape. Most just go out and workout or some exercise. That is where the injuries come.

Do you stretch as part of your workout routine? Yes, most of the time at the beginning and occasionally at the end.

Or do you skip it? Try not to.
Do you think it helps? Absolutely, been injury free mostly.

Started theses stretches in the Army and have continued to do them for years.

Do you stretch before or after your workout? Always before and mostly after, if I have time.

Luckily for me my friend taught me how to stretch when I was in my twenties. I used to have horrible posture and lower back pain all the time. Then my buddy gave me a book on stretching and had a portion on lower back stretches. This was a life saver to me. I still remind him of how appreciative I am about that. He’s now like a Level 10 Yogi. <— I made that up, but he is some kind of Jedi Master of yoga.

I’ve tried to love yoga, but it is just to passive for me. I need to exercise with violence! 🤣

I do still get lower back . . . I’ll call it discomfort (not really pain) if I don’t stretch enough, or if I’m slacking on exercise, or sitting too long.

I like lying on the floor over sitting in a chair. It feels better!

Stretching out after a workout, I never skip. Stretching before a workout, I’m not as consistent. If I’m short on time, that’s a corner that I cut. I shouldn’t and I need to just take that time because injuries will cause me a lot more time later on.

Monday morning…anybody having a hard time getting moving?
august-6.jpeg

Monday: The topic today is protein. Do you monitor how much protein you’re eating? Do you use protein powder? Which kind and do you put it in a smoothie? What food do you eat purely for the protein factor?

What other nutrients do you monitor? What is your goal- how many grams or mg or whatever are you allotting per day?

You're absolutely correct, the stretching will help prevent injuries. It's hard to find that time, I know, but it's very important to have a warm up / cool down.

I actually don't weigh or measure my input. I eat more eggs, fruits and vegetables and less chocolate and other sweets. Nuts of different sorts are also my goto when I need a snack. I need my food to keep up the training.

The only thing I've ever monitored is calories... I think I may be doing it wrong. 😂
