🧘🏼‍♂️🤾🏻‍♀️Getting Sweaty Again: The 3rd Circuit 🚴🏼‍♂️🏋🏼‍♀️

Gah! If affected by hurricane temps you can't be too far away from me.

I never run outside in the July and August heat.

You're hardcore. 😬😂
I wouldn’t usually run after about 9am, but there was a hint of leftover cool out there. We didn’t get a drop of rain from Beryl, but it did seem to suck the heat away (temporarily)

Roller derby is getting real. 6 weeks in and I'm seeing slow but mighty progress. I landed on an elbow while jumping over a cone during a drill. It hurt, but after shaking it out and some ice all systems are go. I skated and jumped cones tonight and didn't die. I'm feeling pretty proud of myself for getting up and doing it again because once I cleared those cones I couldn't stop smiling. I'm loving the support and camaraderie of my teammates and watching us grow as a unit. I need more balance focused yoga in my life for the rest of the week.

I've done a few nights of Yin yoga this week, along with derby practice. Yin yoga focuses on deep stretching and strength. You hold each pose for an extended period of time; my session tonight held each for 3 minutes but the ones before that were two. It's been a challenge staying in each pose and keeping my mind present.

Welp..the girl who absolutely despises cardio signed herself up for her first half marathon in early 2025.

It was one of those 'let's do something outside your comfort zone', 2am, sleep deprived decisions. I definitely wasn't in the same mindset nor the same person after a good sleep, haha. But anywho, training has started. I dread it on the daily but here's to new goals.

Anyone wanna run with me? lol

I like a good marathon session. But it sounds like you're talking about running. 😆

That’s longer than I enjoy running. I actually don’t enjoy running at all but just tolerate it.
I can’t tolerate it for 13 straight miles though. 🤣

Good for you and good luck.

I despise running but maybe I just need the right running partner..

Good luck with the grind!

I recognize these impulsive, middle of the night decisions! I usually apply for random jobs instead of sign up for half-marathons. But I consider those to be somewhat similar!

Ok, what sorts of supports do you have in place? Have you tried any apps like Couch to 5k to get you started? Do you have running experience?

I know @Endless_Night has experience running. Maybe she can provide some better advice than I can?

There are also meetup groups that might be a nice support in your area. Just a suggestion to find other runners that might be training on the same level you are.

I think this is exciting. I’m tempted to just give it a try and start with you. Hmmm 🤔

You're so sweet!

So, for supports, I got the training plan that was put together by someone organizing the run..it's definitely for runners though lol. So, I'm starting small and looking through reviews for different apps and other training plans that I can find online. I have to get my act together, though, because it's a 15 min/mile pace which isn't bad at all but IS for this distance for me lol. If you go over it, they will pull you because they block the main roads and such..I can't get pulled..how embarassing would that be lol.

I'll have to check for meetup groups! I didn't think about that.

The Couch to 5K is how I started. I wanted to do the Beat the Blerch 10K. Worked great! There are programs for longer, but once I had the hang of pace and breathing it was pretty easy to navigate increased running time on my own.

I will say, getting up to pace first and then increasing run time is far easier than the reverse, at least for me.

This stuff is great for preventing muscle soreness. Magnesium. I use the gel on my calves when I run. But it works for larger muscle groups, too. A friend does their quads.

I'll run with you. If you want do do check ins.

I like to do three 10Ks a week, rather than a half marathon, but I'm game to train for something longer.

I'm getting back up to speed after not running for nearly a year. Eesh. 😬

All my running is on the treadmill currently. And will be until we move out of hell season. 😂

Thank you for this! 🙂

It's still sweet, but much more tolerable. I bought the vanilla, but intend to try the chocolate next time around. I'm just relived to find one I can get down after a weight class.

Protein supplements are sooooooo sweet! 😂
You're welcome! I'm glad its working out! It's the only protein powder that doesn't make me gag from the taste. I used my vanilla today too. 😋 And thanks for the reminder that I need to order a new bag of the chocolate powder. 😁

My friend decided to train for a marathon right after her divorce. She was not a runner then, and she suffers from terrible asthma, as well as from other health issues. But her ex was always putting her down and she decided that this was going to be cathartic for her. So she joined a runners group. She did have to pay a fee- I don’t know how much- but she started training with this group of runners that had all ability levels.

She started running shorter races, and I remember her talking about “the slow bus” that would come along and pick up the runners who were running at too slow a pace to finish in time. At first she would beat herself up about if and get really upset. But the other people on her team were like, “yup, I had to hitch a ride on the bus today”. She said that no one really cared, and everyone had been there before.

Hopefully that’s something to remember during those more difficult run days.

She eventually ran a marathon. While having trained as a single mom. Going back to school. While working full time. AND the night before the marathon, her son had a stomach bug, and she STILL, finished that marathon. I am still so proud of her. 💕

This is wonderful! Thank you! I just bought the magnesium, haha. I get so bored on the treadmill - what's your secret for motivation?

So much to be proud of - amazing! Similar stories with the divorce and I'm also in that 'life's too short to not experience things' mentality. I also need to find myself healthy hobbies that will hopefully improve mental health, so this is a big first step in that direction - fingers crossed.

I've been at this roller derby thing for two months now and I'm finally starting to see how far I've come. Tonight we did practice skill assessments and I have things I need improvement on, but I'm feeling fairly confident on most. It's either next week or the week after where we'll be assessed to see if we get to move up to level two of derby training.

I despise running…and I was on the track team. If someone with a big knife and scary vibe is chasing me, I’ll run with you 😂

But seriously, sometimes it’s good to get out of your comfort zone. I pulled my own middle of night decision and impulsively bought a rower. I had a lot of trepidation over that decision. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

I have a couple of friends who decided to take up running in the last few years and they had a lot of luck with local runners groups. They enjoyed the company, camaraderie, motivation, and accountability. They’ve all run full marathons now and one continues to do them with the goal of shorter times even while managing type 1 diabetes 😍

Did my first bit of running last night that I've done in nearly a year. It was a HIIT style run where you go harder for a time and then walk for a time. I had a solid amount of knee pain starting out in the knee that I had my scope on a few months back. It had me stopping and walking a lot more than I wanted. But as the time moved on it kept loosening up more and more so that by the end it was much more tolerable. Planning to do more of these in hopes that I can get the knee limbered up more and get myself a bit more cardio active again.
I'm horribly inconsistent.
