🧘🏼‍♂️🤾🏻‍♀️Getting Sweaty Again: The 3rd Circuit 🚴🏼‍♂️🏋🏼‍♀️

This is wonderful! Thank you! I just bought the magnesium, haha. I get so bored on the treadmill - what's your secret for motivation?
The magnesium is fantastic!

I also run in these. They are great for balance and proper weight distribution. They have them for trail running as well.

As far as the treadmill, I usually run to music, with my playlist curated by tempo at different run points. Some people do podcasts and even watch movies, but I tend to do a lot of thinking when I run, so prefer not too much distraction.

It scorches here a good part of the year, so I spend a lot of time on the treadmill. It's actually good for a lot of things.

It's easy on the knees and joints. It's a great way to discover your stride, pace, and run style, and nurture them into an automatic response. That's much harder to do with outdoor running. Stride is a bid deal. If you run too short you're working too hard and will tire more quickly. Breathing is also affected. I have a little adult onset asthma. My lung capacity is a little slower to expand, so the treadmill lets me focus on that.

Another benefit is it's easier to find what I term "hitting my stride" points. Like, once I hit forty minutes on a run, everything levels and gets smooth. I can then run another forty minutes. Easy. I suspect there are other points, I just rarely run past an hour and a half when training. Knowing those points can help you push through hard spots.

Lots of good ways to use the treadmill to your benefit. Even if it is a more boring run.

Hope that helps. 🙂

You're welcome! I'm glad its working out! It's the only protein powder that doesn't make me gag from the taste. I used my vanilla today too. 😋 And thanks for the reminder that I need to order a new bag of the chocolate powder. 😁
Protein powder is the grossest! 😂

I purchased the vanilla, thinking I might be able to do it in a smoothie, but with the fruit it was just too sweet. However, I can drink mixed with just water. Wishing now I'd gotten the chocolate, as I am dedicated chocoholic. Next time. 😄

We're talking about running and I've been missing it?! Shame on me.
Welp..the girl who absolutely despises cardio signed herself up for her first half marathon in early 2025.

It was one of those 'let's do something outside your comfort zone', 2am, sleep deprived decisions. I definitely wasn't in the same mindset nor the same person after a good sleep, haha. But anywho, training has started. I dread it on the daily but here's to new goals.

Anyone wanna run with me? lol
I started running almost around this time last year through this very thread (I think a little later) and went couch to half marathon in roughly the same time frame, you can do this!

I'm by no means a guru or coach or anything as such, but I'm more than happy to talk about running and/or run with anyone.

Like others have said, running with people (virtual and in person) is super helpful. There's an accountability and it's just fun to share the wins and the struggles.

Don't worry about speed/pace, it'll come with time. Just start slow and gradually increase how often you run and how long you run for. Start with run/walk intervals (heck, stay with them, plenty of people run halfs doing 10 and 1s), keep it consistent in terms of getting out on your feet and pace will follow. I promise you. Consistency trumps all. Period.

Welcome to the club, it's where all the cool kids hang out (I can't actually promise you that part). You got this!

This is amazing!
There are already a lot of great suggestions and inputs on this thread. The one thing I would highly recommend is getting a shoe fitting done. Find a local store that caters to runners or athletes in general (and no, not Footlocker!) and they will analyze your stride and pronation and suggest the right shoe for you.
I believe everyone should get this done, but if you are going to run a long distance, you should definitely get this done.

Welcome to the runner's club! It can get very addictive :)

Definitely this. A good shoe makes a world of difference. Even if it is a minimalist shoe like @Endless_Night mentioned, shoes are a big deal!

Agree! When I had my partial Achilles tendon rupture last year, the shoes became even more crucial.

My add on would be: remember to buy new shoes regularly! Depending on the softness, the pronation of the feet and so on, you should probably get new shoes after about 700 km (give and take).

Oops! @FunLi

Forgot to mention, if you do decide to try a minimalist shoe, cut your first few run times in half, or even a third. You run more on your toes which increases the load on your calves. Those muscles catch up quick, but they need a little time to adjust.

I've known a couple of people who ignored that advice and crippled themselves for a week or so while their calves recovered. 😬

Not gonna lie..toe socks freaked me out in my younger years..I don’t know if I could do toe shoes but hey..I’ll at least go and try them on lol.

I recently bought a pair of Brooks Glycerin after I wore my Hoka’s out. So far I like them, but I do likely need to get fitted like someone else mentioned above. I have high arches 🫠

That's a very good, neutral shoe with lots of cushioning. Brooks makes good shit.

I agree with going to your local running store to get advice and try some things on, they know what's up. That is very likely a shoe they would have you try on, though. I also get a little edgy with anyone trying to change someone's gait, stride, or pronation with a shoe. Your stride will become more efficient as you run more and there is tons of evidence that shows letting it happen naturally is better than trying to forcefully change it. If you go somewhere and they do that, back away slowly in your very good running shoes.

I’ve tried the toe socks in the past and they felt very weird. In fact, I’m sitting here wiggling my toes just thinking about it 😂

Do you eventually get used to the feeling of the shoe? Like contacts? Or does it remain a noticeably different feeling?

You get used to them.

Initially, they feel quite strange. Getting your toes in place can be . . . awkward. 😂

However you adjust remarkably quickly. I have several pairs, not all for running. There's a non-lace up style that's my general wear shoe for doing errands and anything where I'll be on my feet a lot. They're so comfortable and improve balance. I'm a little klutzy, so the latter is a plus. :p

Socks.

What supplements do y’all take? Do you think they make a difference?
Here’s my list:
Multivitamin
Berberine
Saw Palmetto
Krill oil
Vitamin D (because this is Lit, so I feel it’s necessary to state that I give this as well 🤣)
Probiotics
Protein powder
Creatine
I honestly don’t know if most of them make a difference. Creatine does help me push a little farther during workouts, though.

My favorites for general wear, errands, and rowing are NoBull knit runners. The laces are for show and you just slip them on like a sock. They’re super comfortable.

I’m curious about testing out the toe shoes though. Do you have a different brand you like for non lace-up running errands shoes?

Same brand.

I have these, though they seem to have gone to a knitted upper, which mine are not. They also have these under the Walking section if you'd like more bulk, like your NoBulls.

I also have a pair of these. Total, three pairs of out and about, two running, one trail running, and that latter pair for dance.

It's one of those things you love, or you don't. 🤷‍♀️

I take a methylated B, plus the usual stuff.

The creative increases your endurance? Weights or cardio, or both?

It helps with muscle fatigue during workouts. It takes a fair amount longer for my muscles to feel tired, so I’m able to get in a little extra. Doesn’t do anything for the lungs, though. Not directly, anyway. I guess by running farther or a little harder, that helps the lungs.

Ah. Okay, so this would be desirable on days with weight workouts. Any particular brand?

I think for it to be most effective you have to take it everyday, but you can take it just on lift days.

I use Finaflex pure creatine unflavored. I do one scoop, which is 5g, per day. A lot of people do a load cycle, where they up the amount for the first week, but I opted to not do that.

I take B12 daily and Vitamin D every other week. I definitely think that B12 has had an effect on my energy level.

I take an iron supplement because my iron is always low. I also take a kelp supplement for iodine to help with thyroid function, probiotic every few days, and a glucosamine supplement for joint health and function. I put collagen and protein powder in my smoothies. I feel better when I take them so I say they are making a difference for me.

I try and get most things from eating well, (also, I often forget to take supplements most of the time)
Having said that, half scoop of Protein powder and creatine mixed into my full fat yoghurt
And a glass of methylene blue daily, definitely helps my energy levels.
I shy away from low fat foods, I find if I eat high fat, Greek yoghurt, ribeye steaks etc, that I'm more satiated and eat less overall
Just need to find the health benefits of beer and I'd be a happy man 😃
