Okay... now I know I have a picture of that old beauty somewhere. AND the two girls I bought it from too! I gotta go diggin to find it now... hopefully be able to scan it and then try to post it.

Oh and my first Sporty was a '75...
I ran AMF Harleys for a couple years starting with the Sportster and then moving up to a Low Rider... I'm sure glad they went back to making bowling balls and forgot trying to ruin the Harleys.

okay you guys, I am sure that everyone has their favorite when it comes to bikes. My goal was to have a Harley by my 40th b-day, which I did not make, but I love my honda rebel all the same. I am sure that I will upgrade it at a later date, but I am not sure when or to what brand as far as that goes. But I personally do not see any sense in having a bike that I do not feel secure on, and I figured that the rebel was the best thing for me to start with, and get to the point that I feel secure enough to go to something bigger.........as my youngest says, that is a bike for kids.........but that is ok, I am just a great big kid at heart......

Oh yes, I guess that you could say that I have an old bike also.....lololol

It was the mid 60's as I flipped through a Hot Rod magazine and saw this ad showing this preppy looking guy sitting on what might have been a 90 cc red Honda with that slogan written across the top of the add. I was in High SChool and the thought of trying to start a Sportster scared the crap out of me. I would watch a few die hard bikers in front of a local bar as they went through the routeen of priming and pre-kicking the thing. Standing on the side of it so they could put their full weight into a good kick. Maybe a "POP" and puff of smoke on the first kick... Quickly flipping the wrist to keep the gas going in at the right moment. Then "BAMM!" the thing would thunder to life and shake the ground! WOW! My heart would skip a beet my legs would shake as I saw him straddle that thing and ride off hitting the gears and announcing his way across town. Yup loved it but it scared the crap out of me to try it myself....BUT, this 90cc red bike with the preppy looking kid on it? He had three college coeds standing next to him with big smiles so you know this little red bike was a chic magnet! At least that was my thoughts. I wore those pages out dreaming till a few years later when a friend asked if I wanted to pitch in to buy an old Honda Super 90. It was a piece of junk but for us it was a dream come true! Black bullet shaped tank with chrome side panels... And it was fast! We could pull wheelies and outrun all those lawn mower powered mini bikes. As far as the chics... Well lets just say we were a hit in that department to! The girls goals and ours may have been totally different but we had the big lolly pop and loved giving rides on it!
That old bike lasted for quite a few years and neither one of us admitted to our parents we owned it...Untill that one day the cop drove us home to explain why we were doing 60 mph down the street with no license , no reg , no ins, and no helmet ( no laws back then)
Wasn't till a few years later that I landed a great deal... A fine looking CB175 I "stole" from two college girls who couldn't bring I home either. That little bike ran like a charm even with my total lack of maintenance. Still every once in a while I would hear that sportster thunder up the road and my heart would always skip a beat.
I love my harley... and I doubt I'll ever ride anything else now... but I have a real soft spot in my heart for those old Honda's... Vintage? Well for me the answer is a resounding yes!
Honda worked wonders to make the motorcycle something that was accepted by the general public as something more than a "bad boy" machine.
So lets all tip three fingers of your favorite beverage ( JD for me) in tribute to those old Vintage Hondas!

Honda worked wonders to make the motorcycle something that was accepted by the general public as something more than a 'bad boy' machine.

What that really means is that they got some Madison Ave. geeks to pimp a product they couldn't sell on it's own merit. It worked. That would be the end of the story except now they have a V-twin cruiser that a newer generation of pimps promote with a 'bad boy' image complete with tattoos, boots, jeans and attitude.

Man, I don't know. I read some of the stuff you posted and I can't help but think, "What else does this guy believe in....that the Christmas season does start at the end of October? That the AMA is looking out for your intrests as a motorcyclist? That the Secret Police are really our Friends, or would be if we got to know them better?"

I think what initially ticked me off with SirGary's post was the part about Concourse de' Elegance (sp) as though a Honda compares to the Rolls, Bentleys, Dusenburgs and other "Vintage" autos that are normally associated with this type of event. To me it seemed as though someone was trying to put on 'airs' to cover a sense of insecurity and to pimp the Honda myths for all they were worth.

I mean, face it folks, whatever you ride, whatever it costs, whatever it looks like....all it is, and all that it will ever be, is the most expensive form of third class transportation in the world.

In the REAL world they call 'em 'Bike Shows'.

Sorry, I haven't been around! I had a problem with my PC and have been working ridiculous hours. I thought I had contracted a virus. My PC was running incredible slow. Actually turned out to my McAfee security system. It seems that there was a problem with the software on my PC. I had to remove the software from my PC and down load it all over again. I had a virus on my machine back about 6 months ago and had the same symptoms. With all the hours I just couldn't find the time to sit down and dig into it.

While were on the subject of Honda memories. I also learned to ride on a Honda. A buddy had an ol'e Honda dream which in reality was a street bike. However we were young kids a rode it as a dirty bike... Shit we dropped that poor thing and hit trees with it. I don't think the was a piece of tin on that bike that wasn't dented. I never saw any maintenance. We were lucky enough to come up with the money for gas. We could kill it. I just seemed to run for ever. Hell last I knew that dam thing was still running...

Yeah I am one of the heritage GoldWing Interstate rides. My girl is 27 years old. A tremendous amount of TLC went into bring her back for the dead but it was worth every bead of sweat... What isn't available in chrome in the engine compartment for her was polished to look like chrome. It's nice to hear people walk by and utter the words "nice bike"... To most people she is perfect. I know she has some blemishes that need to be taken care of before she is perfect and that will be taken care of. Even if I bought a new bike tomorrow she would still be sitting there in the garage. The only real complaint I ever heard about a GoldWing is that they usually out last there owns. I lost a friend last year at 85 yo. I rode an ice blue Honda Gold Wing with 250,000 miles. The bike still ran strong and he's pasted away.

Oh, Blueeyes I agree with NYWings about rubbing it in about your nice weather. All I can do is give my best girl a hug... I need the spring!

Hey Elbiscayne... We need to have a drink sometime ...
I stumbled upon Bikers run quite some time ago and the first thing I enjoyed was the welcome I received and how nice everybody treated everyone here.
Bottom line is were all good people who have a common bond... the love of the open road and the wind in our faces. People buy the bike they can afford and the one they happen to like for whatever reason.

I started with a small Honda and moved up (in size) to the English bikes and then went over to Harleys because I liked the bike and the ride. Purely personal preference.

I went to a bike show recently and there were a lot more Jap bikes there customed out that I recall seeing at other shows.
These guys had chrome everywhere and trick paint that I really liked. They put a lot of money into these bikes and made something they could be very proud to own. Yes they started life as a Jap "Harley look-e-like" ... But whats wrong with that? They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery...
The Imports looked at the market and capitalized on the look.
I think this only helped to keep old Willy G on his toes...

I love nothing more than to enjoy the open road riding with others or as a lone wolf. Its nice to have a warm place to set and tip a few after a long day ride. Its also great to stop in here and share your good times with all the great folks here too.
Were all friends here who enjoy sharing the good times...

One more day until the weekend... God this has been a long week...

We are getting some kind of a winter mix right now. It is supposed to turn over to freezing rain for tomorrow morning's commute. Where the hell is spring. Oh and no comment there lil Ms. Blueeyes...

I realize that I was away to long from this thread...! How the fuck did we get so hung up on what someone rides... I'd like a Harley but can afford one right now. But what I ride doesn't make me a biker...! I personally couldn't care less what your ride'n...! It's all about you getting to ride something. Hell we got a girl here that rides a scooter. Yep she is on two wheels and that in fact makes her a biker. Why because she enjoy ride'n. Someday she will move up to a bigger bike. I kinda would like to think this thread may have had a small part in that and the people she meet here. Shit I know a lot of Wall Street dudes that ride Harley's and are most definitely NOT what I would consider a biker. A biker is the person not the wheels he or she is ride'n...! Yep and I also don't have a problem ride'n with a women biker. No matter how rough a night she may have had the night before she will still be a lot cuter than some of the stone ugly dudes I've ride'n with... Elbiscayne if your waiting for me to through you off the thread your ass is gonna be waiting a hell of a long time. Yep I may have started this thread but it belongs to everyone on this thread. I find that statement interesting...

I prefer to ride an 03 Heritage Springer ... Has the old school look with the tech of today. Its not for everyone ...Its for me. I enjoy cruising with my butt
26" off the road and the never ending maintenance for that springer is a labor of love to me. Thats me , thats my style.
When I go to a car show, bike show or Art show ...I enjoy the work that was put into the pieces on display. The blood sweat and tears that the owner put into it. I can admire anything old that was painstakingly brought back to original or an all out custom. I don;t have to like the car or bike to enjoy and admire the work and pride that went into it. I would be the last person to stand there and tell anyone their vision is wrong... Who am I to say...
I will look for the unique things the owner has done. I've done a lot of restorations and know how hard it can be to get things just right. Not just make it look kinda like it did when it was new but to make the viewer believe this is what it looked like the day the first owner drove it off the lot.
Delusional... Maybe... and proud of it!
Now about the beer issue... First thing I have to say is "LITE" and Beer are a contradiction of terms... I'll take a home brew over a can of the mass produced stuff anyday... I like my beer dark and my whiskey strong ...
So when we polish the barstools I'll have a Black & Tan to wash down the road dust and then enjoy a double JD neat.

Glad your are finally able to talk motorcycles... do you ride them? and what fine brand of steel horse do you slip between your legs? ( the bike, not Bubba...)
Please post a pic so we can all see what your vision of a motorcycle should be.

I'm counting the weeks and hoping for an early spring... I think we can all use it!

Got the heat turned up in the garage and the bike on the lift so I can massage all those spokes till they shine brite... Pulled the seat and bags off last week to give them a real good saddle soaping. Now I'll work some mink oil into all the seams and stitches followed by a couple good coats of leather dressing to keep them soft and water proof. Two new tires are on the list before the first spring ride...

Well thats life from the great white north...soon to get whiter and colder.

Darn near got it in one, man. I was ridin' a '96 SuperGlide and some dude told me that it was nice for an Entry Level (EL) Big Bike. I said, "Man, that's like callin' my new Chevy a Biscayne." I really loved that bike and never should have let her go. Quick out of the box, never a problem, and was damn near as responsive as the HONDA trials bikes I rode when younger. (XL250, XL350)
I used to drool over the Elsinore, but had to settle for something I could also run on the street. That was back in the mid-70s during my Navy days.

I decided I wanted to graduate to a fatter look without going straight to a dresser, so in '02 I traded her in on a new Heritage Softail, that I didn't like.
Two-tone paint, chrome studs everywhere, windshield the size of Texas, lights on the fender tips...BUT even with all that stuff it was cheaper than the Fatboy.
It was winter anyway, so I stripped her down, sold the bags, seat and tins on ebay, bought new tins (kept the FL look) had the fenders filled in where the lights go, and got 'em painted Iron Gray. I kept the windshield but cut it way down almost to the framework, cause I like having a pouch up there for glasses and stuff. I swapped a guy his Fatboy handlebars for the mini-apes on the Heritage. Went to the Screamin Eagle air filter because I like the round air cleaner better, and found me a Fatboy seat at a swapmeet. Bought new bags from American Eagle and use Ghost brackets for easy on and off. Am also running Hooker staggered duals. I also put Nostalgia style air cleaner and primary inspection covers and those are the only things that say Harley. I made my own windshield bag, tank panel and pouch and rear fender panel. Tank pouch has a cigarette lighter for smokes on the road, air mattress and cell phone. Also put mustache bars on her for long runs, (1000 mile round trippers) but they come off when I get home. Motor is stock.

I'd post a pic or two but I have not been able to figure out how to reduce the size of a pic to meet forum requirements. Any ideas? I tried a program called Irfanview but can't get it to work....probably cockpit problems. I tried resizing and even tried erasing all foreground and background using Paint.

I have dreams about getting a lot of the chrome powder coated to match the gray and have even tracked down an outfit that will do it, but with being retired now I'd rather spend the bucks on riding and rallys, so unless I hit lotto, that's the way she stays.

My bro Joker has been riding Heritage Springers since they came out in '97
and is now on an '07. Swears by them. The only thing he didn't like about the early ones was the blue or red piping on the seats and bags. When they came out with just black he jumped on them with both feet. Has them on his new bike now. I used to tell him that he has a fringe fetish, but he starts drooling when he hears the word fringe so I don't anymore, especially when I know I'm going to be following him.

Good morning, everyone...

Got home from work yesterday and was exhausted. Made a little supper then relaxed in the easy chair and crashed. Not sure what time I drifted off. Guess the body needed some down time. Hence being up so early.

NYWings I hear ya on the whiter and colder. God I'm getting a bad case of cabin fever this year. I want to be outside play'n but it's to cold to do much of that this time of the year. Now as far as the chili is concerned I have some beef stew I need to finish up first. Actually I had a chili recipe I liked prior to entering the contests. I tamed it down a little as I didn't want to kill off any of the judges. It is more of a Texas style chili that I tweaked a bit. Seeing I am representing Biker's Run I had to add beer to it... The clock is ticking so I have to collect up all I need to pull this off and keep it in one place. I am planning to do more of these under Biker's Run so I probably will keep it all together for these events. I have to give GutterGoddess a call to see if she is still planning on attending the first one with me. Unfortunately the storage unit I am renting isn't large enough to do much work in so about the only thing I can do right now is give my girl a hug. What I have been doing is slowly cleaning out a little of the clutter around the place to get ready for my move this year. Really looking forward to a bigger place. Still a little early to be planning this years cook outs...

Elbiscayne after reading your last post it sound like you got a sweet ride son. Once you figure out how to down size a picture please post it. We have had several of the guys and gals post pictures of there rides here on Biker's Run and the has been some sweet iron on these pages. Sound like yours will be one of them. Don't be surprised if someone here doesn't offer to help you down size a couple of your pictures. I had a gal offer to downsize mine. Be dammed in hell if I could get it to work either...

OK, gang I am in the mood for one of those high cholesterol breakfast of coffee, orange juice, eggs, bacon, Jaded's home fries, and buttermilk biscuits to soak up them bacon dripp'ns. Been thinking all week of a good health breakfast like that....

Well I enjoyed a nice Sunday at the New England bike show, West Springfield MA. Met Eddie Munster and his "munster bike" . Saw some very nice custom bikes and choppers. Some fantastic paint jobs. and some great old bikes.
They had a large poster with several old Honda'a on it and the slogan... "You meet the nicest people on a Honda. For bikes they had some very original old Honda's '65 S65 in near perfect original cond. A 305 dream , 69 175 , 350 Four, and a Mini 50 that shined like a jewel! They had a mid 70's Suzuki with a Rotary engine that was unrestored. The Indian Museum had several of there bikes there to promote the opening in October of 2008. It was freezing outside but I enjoyed a great day talking motorcycles and good times with old friends and new faces I met today. It was a real quick fix for my Cabin fever!

Elbiscayne, I would love to see your handiwork on the Heritage. Sounds like you really made it your own. I remember a friend who bought one of the very first SuperGlides ... The one with that funky fiberglass tail piece. We made it look a lot better but I bet he had it in it's original red white and blue colors now...
I moved up from my sporty to a 79 SuperGlide. Everyone called it a Low Rider cause it had FatBob tanks but it was really an FXE ( "E" stood for fatbob tank)My front forst were 2" shorter too so my SuperGlide was lower than it's brother the LOW rider. Next went to one of the very first edition '84 Soft tail Customs. and later went to an 87 Heritage "special" , Talk about big bags... You could go to sleep in those things... and they had loads of fringe too. I also have a thing for fringe. Too bad my 03 Heritage Springer is the year they did away with all the fringe on the bags!

Well I sure wish I could figure out how to resize these pics myself cause I got some great shots of those old Honda's!
