Who said it was a contest?

Let's say you're at a party. You see a group of women, including a good friend of yours, some acquaintances and one or two you don't know at all. Do you look at your friend and say, "You look great tonight" and then tell the others what order you'd put them in if there were a contest?

That would divide them and make the one you singled out feel bad for her friends, right? Same thing. We're at a party here. Sometimes it's a wake. Sometimes it's a game of Boggle, or Twister. The one that is consistently appealing about the party, especially for people whose comfort in cyberworld might indicate some social shyness, is that the party doesn't accord anyone special rank.



I don't consider AH to be a party, and this was never presented as a "contest". I also don't think the reaction has anything to do with being "young" and "old." Perdita is not "young" although she looks young to me! Most of the people in my lists have written very highly ranked stories, and have many posts in the AH, so these are not arbitrary choices. Are there others that are similarly talented? Of course, and that was never denied. But, I can't know every persons' stories in the entire AH...noone can! For instance, let's say you had done my list for the sake of example, and I was not on it. That wouldn't faze me in the least. I don't know you, and therefore wouldn't expect to be on it. Even if I did know you, I'd be happy for the people that were on the list. This was never presented as anything that had to do with popularity, just an acknowledgement of twenty beautiful people to me, who have made important contributions to the AH. That is why I made the psychaitrist reference....it makes no sense to be upset if someone you barely know includes you on a list of this nature. Do you see my point now?

Seriously babe, I feel the same way about you and plenty of people I know here on Lit. I know several beautiful people, more than 10, I'll tell you that.

I probably know at least 60 or 70. I'm positive I'll meet more in my lifetime. There is no top ten. No reason to put people in that situation. I love all of you.

While I can appreciate the feelings and the points made by those who are against this type of thread for whatever reason, I would like to point out that I think it was made with the best of intentions.

I know what it's like to feel so much apreaciation for certain individuals on this board that you are just bursting with the desire to tell everyone how great you think they are. And I can also appreciate why some people are uncomfortable with being set out above others in this way (especially in list form which I think was the most unforunate part of the post for all concerned.)

But has anyone stopped to think how you would feel if you sincerely tried to express your gratitude or love or affection or whatever it is for someone only to be chastised for it?

I have the greatest respect for Perdita, and can see her point- however I can also see that if I were sack, my feelings would be greatly hurt about now.

If people don't like the 'top ten' lists, or feel left aout by not being included, they don't have to read them. Some people do seem to enjoy these lists and just can't see what the fuss is all about. The same as with the political or religious threads- do peoples feelings get hurt? Yes. But do we think that those who start them are all schoolyard bullies- no, at least I hope not.

I really don't think sack diserved to be bitten, when she {he?} was trying to give out hugs.

You are right beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I think Nikki started this thread to give everyone a chance to mention those people who have made them feel welcome or meant alot them at the AH. She only started by listing a few that she regularly interacts with but she created this thread so we can all celebrate the beauty of all the AH Ladies.
Like I said its an honor to be on a thread full of lovely ladies and the AH is full of such beauties, including you nymph.

Just because,and please don't think I'm being kiss ass here but, you are the one person here who I usually don't want to disagree with. When you say something I tend to think that it must be right. That's probably wrong of me to very nearly value my your oppinion above my own, but if you express something strongly such as your earlier post, and it is against something that I was enjoying, I usually feel sort of like a kid caught in the cookie jar. And I figure I aught to rethink my own attitudes. If I take the opposite side as you, I feel kind of guilty. Like I'm contradicting an authority or something. I'm not sure if I can really put it into words what I mean.

I am sorry that I singled you out. You were certainly not the only one who felt the way you did. Just the only one I felt uncomfortable disagreeing with, but that I think is on me and I appologize for having come accross wrong like that.

Perdita, I'm disappointed.....

I've always gone out of my way to support you as an author or person, leaving nice feedback, mentioning your stories whenever I can, and defending you if necessary. And your response? To call me a witless kiss-ass! I'm very confident in my abilities as a writer, and feel some of my stories can hold their own with many here. I don't feel a need to kiss up to others, but if that's what you choose to believe, obviously I can't do anything to stop you. But I hope you understand that in the future I would feel uncomfortable reading/commenting on your stories or you as a person. I try to be as objective as possible, but you've broken a little bit of my heart, and that saddens me.
