Now now Pengy I was trying to be polite to the French guy and you might just have stirred up his doubts about L'Entente Cordiale. Let's face it there are a couple of good things that have come out of France, wine and Thierry Henry (just wish he chose to play for Sheffield Wednesday rather then Arsenal).

Don't forget Cantona !!

So am I but I had tried to forget it - thanks for reminding me.

The only thing I remember Wednesday winning is the old Coca Cola cup (league cup - not sure what it's called this season) when they beat Manchester United in 1992

I guess we are both old enough to remember when England won the World Cup ..........ages before the French ever did.

And I hate to correct you but Sellars was actually English playing a frenchman, lol.

Hiya Team....I made a point of getting outta bed at 4am this morning to catch the closing stages of the Red Soxs / Yankees final game. Twas my first ever baseball game and I gotta admit I was a lil confused !!

Firstly , to DLL commisserations sweetheart , and a nice warm hug (((((((((DLL)))))))))))))) Top any Red Sox fans , congrats , it was a comprehensive win in the end.

Now what I need to know.....

1) What's the distance between the pitcher and the hitter?sixty feet, 6 inches (a shade under 20 meters)Now consider that the pitches often approach the batter at ninety miles per hour!

2) How many pitchers are allowed on each team?A team may have a total roster of 25 players, with no limits by position. Most teams have four or five starting pitchers and an equal number of relief pitchers - for the "bullpen")

3) When a catch is taken , can the basemen still run and score?(yes, unless it is the third - last - out of the inning

4) Are the guys that field the same ones that go into bat?yes]

That'll do for starters !! I watched on ESPN and the jargon used by the two commentators was another language to me....as for the statistics - I haven't a clue!! :D Baseball, like any sport, does have its own corner of the language. As for statistics, no sport has recorded more trivia about its contests than baseball.

Hope you fans can help me out here - I'm sure i'll get a lot more out of the game when I understand exactly what's going down !! ;)

Have a triffic day !!!!

Pete

About the same distance as between the bowler and batsman in cricket then when taking into account where the batmen stands and where the bowler releases the ball.

As a matter of interest do you know what sort of speed the pitcher throws the ball at?

The fastest pitches achieve a velocity of nearly 100 miles per hour once the ball reaches the batter. I believe that means that the batter has approximately 1/4 second in which to react with his swing once the pitcher has released the ball.

Similar sort of of speed to the fastest bowlers in Cricket but they also have slow spin bowlers who bowl at about 50 mph

consider this......For the fourth consecutive season, MacInnis won the hardest shot competition, winning on his first attempt of 100.1 mph, edging a 100 mph blast by Philadelphia Flyers left winger John LeClair. It was the sixth time in the event's 10 years MacInnis has won, and it marked his second-hardest winning shot. The record of 105.2 mph was set by Al Iafrate in 1993.

some hockey trivia for ya

Thanks a lot mate , very informative ! :) Incidently the pitching distance is practically identical to the bowling distance at cricket! Speeds of 100 mph have been recorded at cricket , the ball weighs 5.5 ounces and hurts like hell!! ;) Give it a go sometime , I know ESPN has some really good cricket programmes.
