well, we call these states "Bundesländer"
best translation would be certainly "federal states", similar to those in Mexico since both, Mexico and Germany are Federal Republics

some bulbs need initial frost to get them started growing in spring
- it has something to do with the production of encymes (sp?) -though I don't recall if dafodils count in that group
and if your trip across Germany will bring you somewhere close to my place don't forget to buzz me in time
