Old house's RULE!!!!! That was always the first thing I wanted to see on any vacation......go out and do your part to save them!!!

It's me job, Mum!!!!

I finished getting the first piece of first floor structural rot replaced this morning - I cut it out the Friday before class. I've got a bit to do in the left front corner, which looks like water damage. I'll get it knocked out tomorrow, and then go start on the biggest structural problem of all - the back room downstairs. It's awful.

It's going to be a wet one at work today. It has rained all night, and is supposed to all day long, too. At least the roof doesn't leak, so it doesn't rain inside.

Since McC is coming this weekend, he can show me how to use Mom's scanner, so we can get something up in the way of pictures soon, I think.

We may also have pigeons inside today because of the rain. That would be too bad.

Rain, huh? I thought you were having a drought, sounds like you are whining. Tisk , tisk.... be thank ful for the rain, because it will help you find leaks!!!

So put the pigeons to work...! I hope at the very least that you will have provided ample exercise space for the poor little critters, cooped up all day. Not able to get out and stretch their little wings. Poor little dears.
Whoo hoo someone who might know how to operate the scanner!!!! Finally we will be able to see what this place looks like! How long have you kept us ...waiting????

Actually, the scanner mission will serve two purposes.

The first will be to train the old man in how to use the thing. The second will be to get some before and after shots of the previous house - I still don't have the before pics from this house back yet. I'm not pushing her, because she takes great pictures and doesn't charge me a dime, either.

We found a couple of roof leaks today - oh well. It's getting a new one anyway.

Almost off for another day of structural repairs.

There is damage at the left front corner, which I will tackle today, and should finish quickly. Then it's down the left side, near the rear. I have a part to cut out, and then the wall needs to be lifted back into position. This will re-square two windows and get that part stabilized.

How is lifting the the wall done?

Do you have jacks?
Is this on the first floor?
Is there a foundation?

2116 Miller Avenue

This is a picture of the house we finished in May. It made the front page of the local Real Estate section on 30 June.

This more closely resembles the newspapaer picture.

The figure on the front porch is my son.

I finally figured out how to sift thru all the files to dig the picture out so Lit could make something of it.

Credit for the pictures you have seen to Chris' wife for her fine photography skills, and to Cipher for helping me get the damned files resized so I could post them. Also, thanks to my son, who ran his grandmother's scanner to get them into computer file form.

First, one is careful.

One gets a jack. I use a six ton hydraulic jack. I've seen guys use 10 and 20 ton jacks, but, if I can't lift it with a six ton, I don't want to be around it.

One also needs lots of blocks and wall studs to use to spread the load and to prop things while moving the jack around.

Lifting is usually done in stages, and a bit at a time.

The whole side of the house has settled because the sill - the bottom board under the first floor joists - has rotted and compressed. Total lift at the area we have started in is about and inch or so.

The house does have a brick foundation, which is in surprisingly decent shape, and is pretty level, too.

Hi MBB.. Did the pics work for you???

Yours were just a tad big, but thanks for doing it. Cipher ran this batch, and I think they look pretty good.

Hell of a difference, eh????
