Pink Orchid 2024: Story Event for Women-Centric Erotica - Official Support Thread

Selene from Underworld was particularly meaningful for me, but Ripley is the OG.
Whenever Jennifer Lawrence made the comment about Katniss Everdeen being the first female main character in an action film, everyone jumped her shit.

But honestly, she had a point.

Most the movies that feature primary female leads are gritty and violent. Underworld, Alien(s), Kill Bill.

Katniss Everdeen was one of the first ever female MCs in a show intended for YA. And she did a good job, I think.

Right, so maybe ignore the movies and TV and focus on written works.
Movies/TV have to heighten the excitement by being more graphic and you don't get a character's motivations as much -- without a heavy reliance on exposition. And movies bog down when a character is constantly complaining about his/her situation.

I finally got around to reading and then watching The Hunger Games series a few months ago. I do like Katniss as a character, but reading her is better than watching her.

Ahem. Buffy, She-Ra, Wonder Woman… I’ll be quiet. ;)
I assume you missed it where I said "action film"?

When Hunger Games came out, there was no largely successful motion picture for She-Ra, Wonder Woman, or even Buffy (she had a film, but it was only moderately popular, and vastly overshadowed by the TV show)

What Jennifer Lawrence said was incorrect (she said as much in a subsequent interview), but her sentiment was largely accurate.

Reading her is far better than watching. But I liked both.

Action film, right. Marketed towards young adults. Female martial arts stars like Cynthia Rothrock & Sue Shiomi are also chopped liver. :(

Wikipedia is your friend.
Your unnecessary snark aside, if a significant cross section of posters require WIKIPEDIA to identify the "cultural impact" of who you are championing, maybe they aren't such killer obvious examples?

Pedants could similarly rip your only few decades old examples apart b/c representation has been a (too) slow and steady march since media started.

Maybe instead of r/Iamverysmart fights, we take people's suggestions for what they are, bits for fun, inclusive discussion on a smut forum thread, not arguments in front of the Hague?

Agreed, thx.

In other news, when are we going to get an Ace Attorney game with a female protagonist? I’d love to see such a game. Apologies if there’s one already, I’m not very familiar with the franchise.

Sigourney Weaver as Ripley was terrific - but also remarkable as a simple 'scientist' in 'Avatar'.
I'm just an idiot but I liked Scarlett Johansson's "dubious" and "hesitant" evolution (IMHO) in the more recent "Black Widow" (not in "Iron Man", where they painted an intolerable part on her) and the less dramatic version played by Florence Pugh, with phrases like "what a poser" for the sake of irony.
And that particular version of Loki who survived amidst a thousand difficulties, played by Sophia Di Martino. Great actress, very underrated.
If you like 19th century literature, don't underestimate "PPZ=Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", 2016 movie, starring a stunning Lily James and a remarkable Lena Headey with a pirate eye patch, OMG! - yes, Lena: Cersei in GOT, but also The Purge, and Queen Gorgo in 300.

While we're here... favourite kick ass female character?
Lisbeth Salander from the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. Especially as played my Noomi Rapace in the Swedish movie adaptations (though Rooney Mara in the US version is closer to the Lizbeth of the novels). Smart as hell and vicious when she needs to be.

Noomi has been taking on many action roles: e.g the bodyguard in "Close" and soldier on skates in "Black Crab". Prometheus was disappointing but Noomi was stellar (as was Charlize Theron, also not shy about playing strong women. Loved her in The Old Guard and Fury Road).

I know for a fact that the first story for my event has been completed 😊

Sadly, that’s not my story, so I’ll get back to writing. How’s everyone else doing? Have you started writing yet? How many is going for the space hippies? I didn’t, but theoretically there is enough time to write another one.

...How’s everyone else doing? Have you started writing yet? ...
I can have one for you.

It's first person from my MFC, Jan POV (who you didn't like two years ago at the strip club because she's TOO domineering). She's somewhat conservative (and mean) at work. But her misogynistic boss makes her go to counseling for her abrasive and sarcastic attitude, before he'll recommend her for a pay raise.

Near the end: “I heard from his boss’s secretary, Glenn’s pay was frozen,” I added with a hint of satisfaction. “… I was relatively tame last week. And if he’s a good boy from now on, I might allow him to survive.”

I'm almost 9K words into what will probably be about 12K.

I'll try, but mostly to subject you to my writing.

I'll have something, but right now, I'm busy with my Christmas story.

Mine is resting. It's so good to have writers' block behind me (seemingly), but writing three stories at once is not what I had in mind.
I actually have two written, from start to finish, and the one I'll submit will need some time to proof. I'll be looking for a beta reader.
Now I need to get back to finishing the story I began before hearing of this challenge.

The last two years I've just submitted what I was working on at the time (worked well this year, was a bit tenuous last).

[Looks at current draft. 100 men including half a dozen significant characters, not a woman in sight. Ah. Forget that one.]

At the rate I'm going, my Christmas story may become a Pink Orchid one. The short one I meant to post in the summer may get submitted soon...

Sigourney Weaver as Ripley was terrific -

One of the things I really liked about the Ripley character--and there were many things--is that it wasn't entirely obvious from the beginning that she was going to be the hero. It was an ensemble cast, and you didn't know who was going to get eaten and who wasn't. Her character emerged organically from the plot as the hero, and that was interesting. I remember thinking Dallas might be the hero, and, well, that sure didn't happen. That was in an era when it was unusual to have a female lead hero in a role like that, and the movie let it happen through her character in a fairly subtle way rather than investing her with phony superpowers.

I'm pretty sure when they fucked, Dallas was on the bottom. LOL

And yes, Dallas and Ripley were a thing.
