Runners unite?

I don't even get offended by non running friends scoffing at my running accomplishments because honestly, if they think its so easy they are welcome to try.

I think its a great thing to get out and run and be consistent and try to push yourself. I love seeing people out running because I know that they are in that zone and pushing themselves.

There are very few feelings that are better than winding down after a good run. Right now I finished 10k a couple hours ago, I'm sitting on the couch and I'm just trying to keep the good feelings flowing. From one to the next. Running certainly helps keep my libido high and my blood flowing. :)

Anyone can run a marathon though.

They can run it but if they aren't conditioned to do so they'll do quite a bit of harm to themselves.

Newspapers/journalists tend to simplify things so the masses will read their crap.
I think it's great that the media is now seeking to push a positive narrative about the benefits of running and the inclusivity of the sport. As you say, though, they're leaving out the important messages about the need for patience and commitment. I've seen quite a few people turn up for their first run and then give up completely because they expected it to be a "quick fix". :(

It's weird, though. One of my friends said to me, without any hint of humour or self-conscious irony: "I'd be able to do that if I could be fit like you" (she's significantly overweight and inactive). Another chided me for "self-inflicted injuries" just because I mentioned (not complained) that I was tired after a race. I just don't get their points.

I agree! I find, though, that I need to run at least 5 miles before I start to get those mood uplifts and buzzing feelings. 10km is a good distance for that, as you say. :)

I started running again recently...I do 3 or 4 races a month (5K or more)....working my way up to 10K, maybe a marathon in the future...

Does anyone else find it annoying to have one's running achievements put down by non-running friends and relatives? I blame media coverage that pushes out inclusive but over-simplistic messages such as "anyone can run a marathon" (which may be true, but overlooks the necessity for a great deal of discipline, dedication and training).
.

What I find a bit disconcerting is that as soon as anyone knows that you are a runner, they automatically assume that you run marathons. Forget the media influence on "anyone can run a marathon", that's similar to assuming that anyone who can drive a car can win a NASCAR or Indy 500 race. I'm a runner. I don't run marathons. I do it for myself, to keep myself fit and to maintain my sanity.

Journalists tend to slant things to serve their own purpose. They will cater to their readers and what will gain the most exposure.

I agree. I enjoy running because it's the only time where I can focus on whatever I want to focus on. Usually, that's my rhythm, my breathing, my cadence, my pace. When I am at the gym, there are so many distractions and usually not good ones that take away from your workout, in my opinion. This is why when I do go to the gym, I tend to go early to avoid the crowds. However, lucky for me, I don't really need to worry about that. :cattail:

Seeing folks out running or just being active is always fun. It's encouraging to know that they are doing something for themselves.

Completely agree with you. It's my meditation time. All is good with the world at 6am.

What type of cycling Sophie? Mountain biking or road? Got to admit my geography as far as California is concerned is limited...oops

I am more of a road warrior although I will take to the trails when given the opportunity. I haven't had that opportunity in a while. Sorry for the late response.

It sure is. I love the world at that time. So fresh, so new, so serene.

Good morning!

Saw the Go Blue part and wanted to send my sympathies. Tough year. It has to get better. Your neighbor to the south...we'll see you guys in the last game.

Nope, definitely nothing going on in the head apart from looking for rocks and roots on the trail ahead. Road running does nothing for me these days, give me a hill or trail anytime, I'm not happy running until I'm sweaty and breathing hard.

I only feel it is a good run if my breathing is hard and I'm sweating. I only run on the road to get me to the trail or the next dirt road/two track.

May I ask what trail shoe you prefer? I had a favorite, Asics trail shoe, but they changed the design and I haven't been a fan since.

It will get better. Changes are coming and the program is going to improve. It can only get better from here.

For hills, mountains I prefer Walshes, very old school, not a lot of support but excellent grip on the green stuff. For trail I've got Inov 8 roclites, good for getting to the trail too.

Ran a half marathon yesterday in 1:23 which made me very happy..

Great job, Joe!

Went running with a friend this morning, had lots of fun! We went for an 8 mile run and the last two miles was a race on the track on campus. I had lots to think about tonight and went for a quick 2 mile run. It starts again tomorrow morning. Good night fellow runners. Sleep well and see you on the road! :D

Got in 50 miles this week including a 19 miler (my longest ever!). My first marathon is two weeks from tomorrow!

I keep reading this runners untie and am concerned about tripping.

I did a 10km race today after being sidelined for two weeks with a head cold. To say that I was determined would be an understatement. I was so far into "the zone" that I remember little about the event, and observers say that I went around the course with a look of serious intensity and focus on my face.

As it turned out, I knocked nearly three minutes off my previous best 10k time at that venue. I'm now enjoying a bit of a runner's high. Pow! Take that, rhinovirus! :D
