There is some rationale behind that. The captain wanted to win the pennant, slowing down would have jeopardized the attempt.

Beyond that there are a great many problems with the thesis.

Both vessels would have to be transmitting false location data to the other. If even one of them had correct information the threat would have been identified. Further the 'hacker' would have had to know the precise position of both vessels in order to effectively plot an intercept.

As pointed out in the article fiddling with the GPS data would have affected ALL of the vessels in the vicinity. There is no way that could have gone unnoticed.

It's not that it couldn't have been done, it's just that it would take considerable effort to do so and do so without leaving fingerprints at the scene of the crime.

You might want to think that through step by step. If even one of the vessels has reliable position data, and that most likely would have been the destroyer, evasive action could be taken. Tankers don't turn, accelerate, or stop on a dime. Stopping distance is measured in miles, as is the turning radius. And while the destroyer isn't any Ski Nautique, it's close enough when compared to the tanker.
