How about a race of interbred aliens who need fresh DNA, and Earthlings are the only compatible donors. Feb 14 is the only day of the year when these aliends are fertile. They are also only fertile when genuinely romantically aroused ( both them and their human mate), so science aided insemination or rape are out.

So they rush to earth, having to seduce their 'victims' within the day. Their scientists have studied our rituals and they simulate the chocolates, flowers, etc, but with slightly offkey moments.

Esp challenging would be getting the Earth Girls to come to the Home Planet ( Venus, anyone?) to give birth. Now THAT would be an act of love.

A few ideas based on history:

1: The 14th of February in the Roman Empire was originally a holiday to honour the goddess Juno, who was the goddess of women and of marriage. There were customs about boys and girls being paired for the duration of the festival based on drawing names from a jar. Basic story based around this tradition, set in ancient Rome.

2: Claudius II actually banned marriage because it was causing young men to avoid serving in his armies. The original Valentine was a priest who refused to stop performing weddings. One could write a love story based around a young couple in love, with Valentine as a central figure in their love. This idea could be combined with #1.

3: Valentine dies his martyr death, but discovers, in the afterlife, that he was actually wrong about Christianity and that the Roman gods are, in fact, the real ones. Various hijinx with Venus, Minerva, Diana and the others.

The Love Letter idea above could be varied and simplified.

A guy gets chocolates for the gal he secretly admires. He accidentally leaves them on the kitchen table. Mom, divoreced, lonely and horny, finds them. The Surrogate

this idea is a bit more developed, but needs a smooth writer with more time than I have:

Miss Jane Harp runs " Miss Jane's Cholocate" in sleepy little Anywheresville. She is a nice spinster, even sings in the church choir.

She only explains things to new invitees after they arrive, also to help encourage them to go for it.

Except the twist is, this year, half the female invites got mixedwith those for her choir ladies gifts. And surprisingly, all the ladies show up, though a few didn't read the fine print.....

Well, I hope I'm able to do a story! Though I'm like you, a lot of ideas, but not a lot of time to see the story through...

I get an idea and start on it, then another idea gets my attention and I tell myself I'll get back to the first story later...

So far I've attempted to start four valentine stories... but none are finished and it's up in the air which one will actually make it into the contest... doubt I'll get more than one finished...
