What’s your most controversial opinion?

I feel like it’s overvalued and no longer means what it used to.

Continued education is what I see to be grossly undervalued
I think I agree. Especially in light of the rise of for-profit colleges, degrees are mainly indicative of an aptitude for a specific type of academia game. In my dottage I find people who learn because they like learning to be far more interesting and generally useful than folks who wanted some letters by their name to get a bigger paycheck. (#notalldoctors 😝)

And don’t get me started on the classicism inherent in the idea off”elite” colleges…

And Trades. I wish they'd discuss them more in school.
I consider trades in higher education…

But I mean mostly STEM degrees… most jobs in STEM require an MSc OR PhD that getting a BSc is so overlooked and doesn’t get the value it deserves. There’s a problem in society when jobs requiring a BSc aren’t getting paid much higher than minimum wage and yet 4 years of schooling is required. It’s bullshit.

Omg “elite” colleges where people get in more because they have connections and can afford it vs the people who have the aptitude.

Pretty much if you want to get paid decently in STEM you need a MS or higher.

If you just want to make a shit ton of money, become a builder.

But even the PhD’s aren’t getting paid the value that their YEARS of studying has earned them.

My high school, in 1982, had graduates from Mechanics/Shop, Food Service, Nursing, and Cosmetology! The first school in the area code with more than 2 trade programs! And we were a city school!

Those of us with STEM degrees mostly all agree that there should be free tuition at two-year trade schools!!

I have my AS and BS in Computer Science. What helped me along the way was my skill of finding errors in code! Like the ONE semi-colon/colon mistake in hundreds, if not thousands, of lines of code!

The people I work with who own Masters and Ph. D's in Computer or Math are absolutely and totally useless. They can't do the simplest of tasks, have to spend hours in meetings to first diagnose if there really is an error!

Want to make a shit ton of money? Start off with a small fortune and a parent who's rich!

State University of New York degree holder:
Associates degrees in Business Administration and Computer Science from SUNY Schenectady County
Bachelors of Science in Computer Science from University AT Albany.

The closest I came to an elite cawledge was attending a trimester at Union College, but that was only because a union in which maternal great-uncles belong sent me there so I could play a season of DIII soccer LOL

From an economics viewpoint, the phd’s are being paid what the market considers a “fair” value.

Why is it “so low”? Too many phd’s.

Why so many phd’s? For profit college devalued BS and BA. Made MS the “needed” degree.

That in turn devalues a phd. Because more people get them.

The reality is that college is a fucking racket these days. Millions of American kids are going to college and getting heavily into debt for degrees that will never return a value.

Pardon me, someone else needs the soap box.
