But it's totally about safety, especially if you have 'big ass trucks' either side. How do you see the traffic you're reversing into?

We aren't backing into traffic here. We are backing into lots where everyone is backing out and everyone is aware of how to do it. Again, this may be a difference in countries - and I made it clear I was referring to US drivers - but it's fucking annoying when someone can't back out of a simple parking spot.

However, when I am unsure about something, I use the wise old words of Google and that says:

I didn't want to get into the physics of different turning circles depending on whether the front or back wheels were turning seeing as what I saw as the relatively simple point that seeing through solid metal is harder than over a bonnet / hood was causing so much consternation...Not to mention the sheer technicalities:
It is the front wheels that makes the turn.
You will need more space to back into a parking lot, space you have when you back into the lot.
(Think of lorries, there is a reason why the back into small spaces!)
Backing out into the traffic will take up more space, as the end of the car cannot make the swing. That is what the front end does.
