Typo O Negative - October Rust (album)

Pete Steele, may he rest in peace, is one of the few bassists who have greatly influenced me. Usually, when you ask a metalhead about favourite bassists, Lemmy of Motörhead tops the list. Not for me. As much as I like the ol' Motörwart, he used to play his bass more like a guitar. When I heard "Bloody Kisses" for the first time, I was utterly blown away by the massive, distorted bass foundation Pete Steele put down, generous distortion and crunch to the point where his guitarist sounded almost fragile and dainty. When I had to vacate the drum chair in favor of more technically versed members of the school band, I picked up the bass and after learning the first few fingerings, I played along to "Black No.1". It's basically "Smoke On The Water" for bassists by now. The other bassist I played along with was Tony Pettitt, of Fields Of The Nephilim and now Eden House.

Anyway, "October Rust" is my favourite Type O album (minus that shit opening joke track). Druidess and My Girlfriend's Girlfriend in particular never get old. That weird atmosphere, part spread-legged testosterone swagger, part goth-y melancholy is simply fantastic.

Red Fang - Whales and Leeches

OMFG they rock.

I mean, sure, they have the winking vids, and the Letterman spot with Paul Shaffer gamely tryna keep up, and the guest stars (Fred Armisen from SNL and Portlandia, Brian Posehn from a whole bunch of places), and the how-did-they-get-invited gigs to THAT, but ... "Turn It Up!" Metalheads rejoice!

Wow they are good
(you can skip the first couple songs in that set if you like (or don't). Yes I have seen them live, but have no other relation with them other than that they make good music. And I like good music.

Thanks MetaBob. This is new to me. I have to check it out.

Pandora.

I've had a "channel" on Pandora for about 15 years, called "Magma Radio". Over countless hours of playing and my giving it thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback, it has my taste more-or-less dialed in, and it plays random songs with little or no repetition.

(Right now, it's on a Riverside track. the last song was by Yes, the the one before, by The Mars Volta...)

Vivaldi's four seasons by Sinfonity

Sinfonity is an "electric guitar orchestra" - 15 or so guitarists, playing classical music by Bach, Vavaldi, and others.

It's a good listen! I've only seen them on YouTube, and haven't managed to find much info on them yet - will keep hunting, though.

Karfagen : Echoes From Within Dragon Island

Very cool!

And quite approachable - should have a broad appeal.

Never heard of them before. But I like it! Very lush and lively. I hear a bit early Genesis and Jethro Tull. Thanks for the recommendation.

Bent Knee : Say So

Excellent. Not everyone's cuppa, but IMO it's the best female fronted act to come out of the USA in the last 10 years.

Not metal, not prog, not pop or rock or ... anything :) Approachable, reasonably complex, and refreshingly different.

The Birthday Massacre - random playlist across their whole back catalogue

Synth pop with a huge '80s sound. Their style has only marginally changed over the years which makes this fantastic chill out music.

The Rubettes - Sugar baby Love

70's bubblgum, I know, I know, I shouldn't binge on this stuff but forgive me mother, I must, I must...
