What Are You Listening to Now 7.0

Halcyon Arrhythmia's eponymous second album

nice poppy prog out of Seattle, Washington, USA today

Update: I erred, the "other album" was actually a single track they released a year ago so this is their first and only album

Mostly Autumn : Graveyard Star

I really, really wish they'd hire a male vocalist. Brian Josh is a great musician. His singing is on pitch etc., but it's a weak delivery.

Mostly Autumm's female vocals have always been top notch, with both of their singers.

:D

Kidding - I hope you and Slave_ have a great festive season.

You as well my friend

side note: I was cranking the aforementioned Confessions of a Romance Novelist and belting out the lyrics loudly when one of our cats stopped dead in the doorway staring at me with an expression on his face of 'what is this madness?!?!?!'

Judas Priest - Painkiller (album)

Actually better than the happy pills I got prescribed the other day. The only side effect's a fierce ringing in my ears when the record ends.

Oh no - so sorry!

I still can't listen to them since Longdon 's death. I don't know why his passing hit me so hard.

I'm actually enjoying this more than any previous BBT.

Perhaps I've been unkind to them, and owe them a more concentrated listed.

Longdon's death was sad. They'd been through several vocalists before settling on him. I got to know one of them (Sean Filkins) fairly well.

BTW - I've just published the annual best-albums-of-2021 list of the 12 writers on a site I co-manage:

https://www.seaoftranquility.org/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=314

See the "Summarized List Of The Top 50 CDs, From All Of The SoT Staff" link - I was interested to see that the new Helloween was voted 2nd favorite of the 12 writers. (I use a fancy formula to collate all of their ratings, and establish a consolidated favorites list.)

(This site is for prog and metal, but the writers tend to lean toward metal more than prog.)

The current Helloween line-up is bonkers. All three singers are back (Kiske, Hansen and Deris) and they all seem to get along very well, which in turn has resulted in some fantastic songs. I bet there's a bit of nostalgia in the ratings as well since Kiske/Hansen were instrumental for both Keeper of the Seven Keys masterpieces (which basically are the DNA and blueprint for much of European Power Metal). I'd rate the album pretty high as well and would put it a few rungs above the new Iron Maiden.

My top record this year is Unto Others - Strength. Fits my mood brilliantly, has energy to spare and gives me those great early goth rock feels. Honorable mention to the new Billy Idol EP. It got better with every spin and I wish other men would age as gracefully as ol' Bill himself *cough*RobHalford*cough*

Speaking of Epica and Nightwish: Didn't like either of their new albums. Epica have gone waaaaay overboard with the excess. Too much of everything, except for memorable melodies. And Nightwish? They have one of the best, if not THE best female singer in their ranks and no fucking clue how to use her. It's clear Holopainen desperately wants to write film scores, not metal songs. Let him - but either under his own name or another project altogether. I want my epic Power Metal with actual guitar solos and soaring female lead vocals back, not whatever this "Human//Nature" clusterfuck is.

Yeah, I'm in a "get the fuck off my lawn" mood.

Can't help it when there's a good bass riff and horns :)

'People Get Up And Drive Your Funky Soul' - James Brown/Fred Wesley/The J.B.s

Never heard of it  but I've added it to my growing "must try" list.

And what's wrong with Halford?!?

Kidding :D LOL

I didn't hate the new Epica or the Nightwish. And I suspect I might not hate (and I suspect you will hate ;)) the new Therion. (I haven't listened to it yet - have no idea what it's like.)

"Hate" would be a bit much. I don't enjoy listening to the new Epica or Nightwish and especially in the latter case, I knew that I wouldn't going in because the trend has been there since Imaginaerium.

The new Therion is alright. It's basically a "Greatest Moments" compilation and perfectly executed. I'm missing the fire and fury of his earlier works.

Sonata Arctica - Silence (album)

An ironic title for a record packed this high with speedy double-kick fueled Power Metal. It took me a few years to warm up to the singer's nasally voice, but now I'm very fond of their early albums up to and including "Reckoning Night" Their attempts to become more progressive can fuck right off because they went from a fun, uncomplicated band to a plodding, boring one-man show. A shame.

I haven't listened to Sonata Arctica for years! I liked them before. My tastes have changed quite a bit over the years, and I don't listen to much power meta these days, but I need to revisit the genre!

King Diamond - No Presents For Christmas

Besides potato salad and Bockwurst, this is my only Christmas ritual. Thankfully, I did get a few nice prezzies this year, including a couple robots I missed out on in the '90s.

Christmas Wrapping

The Waitresses

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanza, and/or any other way you want to celebrate
