listening to this on vinyl - my son gave me my first turntable in twenty years for Christmas. Fun! But wow, this is going to get expensive - vinyl is certainly more expensive than twenty years ago...

What was the best album of 2021, in your opinion?

I'm usually 100% clear in my mind about the best album by this time of the year ... but I don't have a very clear opinion about 2021's releases.

I'll have to think about it...

I'm still debating honestly.

On heaviest rotation is Pineapple Thief's 'Nothing but the Truth'

Therion : Leviathan

As B_J pointed out - it's very different to (e.g.) Gothic Kabbalah - which is the last time I listened to Therion seriously.

Looking at their discography, I see there are several albums I've missed - I need to catch up! I saw them live at a Progpower in Atlanta in 2005. Great show.

This has been a strange year for me - all those months of pain really addled my brain - I need to go through all my purchases as I know I'm forgetting a whole bunch.

I really, really, really would like to listen to Robby Steinhardt's first and only solo album 'Not in Kansas Anymore' as that is probably a strong contender for album of the year. I've heard A LOT of good things and the guest musician list is very impressive.

Right now I feel it's a toss up between The Anchoress' 'The Art of Losing,' Liquid Tension Experiment 'LTE3,' Transatlantic's ' The Absolute Universe,' and Neal Morse Band 'Innocence and Danger.'

I also must say it was wonderful hearing strong albums from Blue Oyster Cult and Styx (finally after twenty years sounding like Styx.)

As I said, I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

Whilst contemplating the best of 2021, I can't help but look towards 2022:

New albums from Tears For Fears, Jethro Tull, Marillion, Big Big Train, and Porcupine Tree...
Freaking Porcupine Tree!!!!!!!!

Need I say more....

Okay, without hearing Robby Steinhardt,

Album of the year: 'The Art of Losing' by the Anchoress

Prog album of the year: 'Absolute Universe' by Transatlantic

I've heard a lot about the Robby Steinhardt and the Styx. I need to research those.

I have the Transatlantic and the Liquid Tension Experiment.

The Anchoress - The Art of Losing ... I know nothing about that, and will research.

I'm glad I asked the question - I've heard a ton of new stuff this year, but per your posts I have a lot of good listening to get to before things start ramping up again at work!

Thanks for the recommendations.

13 of the 15 new Styx songs were written/cowritten by new member Will Evankovich and I think he is finally bringing the composing element that was lost when Deyoung was booted.

I love, love, love The Anchoress, for me she is the new Kate Bush and that is saying a lot. The Anchoress is Catherine Ann Davies, a Welsh multi-instrumentalist/composer. In the mid 2010s she was a touring member with Simple Minds. She has two albums, both incredible - 'Confessions of a Romance Novelist' and 'The Art of Losing.'. Think Tori Amos and Kate Bush with a lot of snark.

And a big thanks to you, B_J and many others for adding to my musical palette. Love it!

The problem with the Steinhardt is that he passed away before it was released. The label has totally locked down on the album. You can only get it from them. No one else has it and no one has it streaming that I know of at the moment.

The label is being super protective - going after pirated copies on Amazon and EBay quickly as well as posts on youtube.

I know Sea of Tranquility did a review.

I have a pre-order for the vinyl but that is not being shipped until mid January.
