Worlds Apart

Saga

I remember when this first came out. I bought it unheard the week it came out because it had such a cool cover. When I first played it I was totally blown away - such powerful vocals, amazing tight guitar and keyboards often rapid firing off of each other and such a solid rhythm section. Been a lifelong Saga fan every since.

Saga - Images at Twilight

The boarding school for blind and visually impaired students I attended decided to offer a CD library during my penultimate year there. They played it pretty safe, focusing mostly on classical composers, but they did send out a poll what else to buy. Some music-savvy people made sure some prog artists were featured as well so we got the complete Genesis, Yes, King Crimson and ELP catalogue as well as Dire Strais and Mike Oldfield. I've spent months renting one album after another (we were only allowed one CD a week so there would be enough for all students) and alongside a ton of early Genesis and Oldfield, this one stuck with me. Fantastic album, even if the mix is rather thin compared to some of their contemporaries.

Fond memories. :)

That sounds like a wonderful musical library to learn from. Nice!

Dani and I listened to it yesterday while tidying up our music space. It does indeed sound very old-school or, to quote my lady love "very charming". We had a good time untangling cables and sorting assorted stuff into boxes. :)

As for the school's CD library: Yeah, it definitely provided a nice counterpoint to my rather metal-heavy formative years. On the other hand, it did have its drawbacks. Even with only one album per student and a suggested rental time of one week, the "good stuff" was hard to come by. For some albums, like most Genesis records, in the end the staff had waiting lists and some people couldn't be bothered to return the borrowed discs on time. And by the time I was there, we had around 200 students ravenous for free music. Also, I did end up with a few misconceptions I'm only now getting rid of - for example my dislike for Dire Straits or Tom Petty. Back then, I found them boring and plain. Took me almost thirty years to appreciate the more relaxed side of rock. :)

The Who - Live at the Isle of Wight 1970

Christ on a bike! I've not listened to this album properly before. I've got headphones on, and keep cranking the volume!

The Who headlined the festival, coming on at three in the morning, and played for close on two hours. The Doors preceded them, but were blown off the stage.

I've got Pete's guitar clanging and ringing in my right ear, the Ox's bass blistering in my left ear, Moonie on the drums dead centre of the mix, and Roger Daltrey right in the middle of my head.

Unbefuckinglievable - Brit Rock at its absolute best. I'll be deaf in the morning!
