To me, the whole assault weapon ban was just to establish a ban anyway. They knew they could never justify a handgun ban, or it would just made more people walk with assault weapons visibly, which would be a very odd and threatening view, I think.

Again, I'm not necessarily for bans, but if it's possible to control cars and traffic, it must be possible to control guns. And I mean _REALLY_ control. If so many toddlers kill people, you can hardly call it effective control.

The ban was far from perfect, but better than nothing.

Well yes, I was expecting something different. From reading some of your previous posts, I would have expected you to try and justify being fearful. The fact that you know that it is irrational means that you are closer to getting over it which I think is a good thing. I'm sorry that my glib comment enraged you so.

People being afraid, and changing their way of life because of it, is what terrorists want. The thing is we, in the UK, have had to live with terrorist attacks since the nineteen thirties when the IRA started bombing London. We may well have been suspicious of Irish people but we soon realised that it wasn't logical to be afraid of all Irishmen because of the actions of a few.

We have had to change our lives a bit. There are no longer any left luggage lockers or litter bins in train and bus stations. That's an inconvenience that I curse the terrorists for, but in the main our lives haven't changed much.

Not being afraid is not the same as not being vigilant. One of the things terrorism has done here is that has made people notice suspicious activity more, and they are more likely to report it. Also, the police are more likely to take such reports seriously.

1)It didn't actually ban any guns.....

2) Even if it did it would have only banned less than 1% of them so I don't see how that could have possibly measured out in crime reports.
