🎡 Monthly Song Challenge 🎡

This is a great song, and really typifies. Mojos approach to all things. πŸ˜‚

He had a pretty good show on outlaw country on Sirius before his passing.
Last time I saw him live, on the Otis tour, he crowd-surfed and I ended up with his butt on my head. He kept laughing and apologizing as we passed him around. Great live show.

Day 18: A song that mentions a food

Fuck, I fucking love Meat Loaf, in everything he did. Has anyone ever watched a little-known show called Masters of Horror? It was an anthology series where each episode was created by a legendary horror-director.

Loaf was in one episode, from the first season, called Pelts. He played a sleazy, greasy, disgusting fur-salesman. And I knew I loved him! Wish he'd spent more time making movies and TV... He was a fantastic actor.

Poi Dog Pondering - Postcard From A Dream (Toast and Jelly)
Another favourite band that i can't remember using in this thread
I keep forgetting Poi Dog Pondering exists! And I love them when I remember them. I have a couple of their CDs round here someplace. Thank you for reminding me!

Day 18: A song that mentions a food

I’ll admit, sometimes I write a prompt so I can post a specific songβ€”perks of being the HBIC.

I just saw Olive live this weekend and they were incredible. Voice of an angel. Also face of an angel. Also… okay, yes, I have a little crush.

Their lyrics strike me, over and over again. This one felt particularly relatable in the way that kind of hurts. But, if you know me, that’s my favorite kind of music.

β€œBut I don't wanna tell you why I don't cry anymore
How many nights I've spent clutching my knees against the floor
I buy precooked rice
And I'm not that nice to myself

I don't wanna show you what it's like behind my smile
So I'll just keep my thoughts at bay and kiss you for a while
Let's keep our lips busy, get a little dizzier
Blurring this illusion that I've built for you
Don't shatter it now
”

Olive Klug - Precooked Rice (blurry illusions)

Oh, I am so glad you got to see Olive! (I remember your crush.) They are soooooo good. Their live show out here was fantastic, and in a tiny venue so there were only about thirty of us there, which was perfect for just them. They are a great iteration of the next generation of singer-songwriter. (One of the great things about indy shows is the odd merch. I bought the farmer's market bag with her album art on it, and they signed it for me. Olive stood back and talked to everyone as they left. I keep it hanging by my desk because I love the title.)

I am so happy for you!

She is a slut but ex thinks it's sexy
Sex reminds her of eating spaghetti

Since someone came in and stole my pick I’m just gonna leave this

The Presidents of the United States of America - Peaches

I definitely almost picked this given its proximity to some core teenage memories, but went a different direction. Fun fact, Chris, the singer and lead here, has a relatively fruitful career as a children's music act πŸ™ƒ

Day 19: A cover song by the opposite gender of the original

it's not better, but it is definitely an excellent rendition...

I love the "Punk Goes..." series -- you can blame @morelikeasong for reminding me of Punk Goes Crunk here last week. But a lot of the covers on those albums have their tongues firmly in cheeks -- a screamcore band covering Adele, for example. Not parody, but definitely taking the piss out of some huge artists. But occasionally you get a band that takes the idea more seriously, taking a familiar song in a different direction. It shouldn't work, but it does.

This is I Prevail, a Michigan band, covering one of the most popular artists ever, Taylor Swift, and one of her biggest hits, "Blank Space," from Punk Goes Pop #6. The lyrics are already brutal--probably Swift's most honest song, wrapped in her sweet vocals. I Prevail just supplies a more appropriate soundspace for them.

I've posted a while ago about Australian phenoms King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, the absolute maniacs who put out 7 albums of different genres in a single year. They're up to 26 albums now, in a decade. And it's all fucking fantastic.

I was literally squeeeeee'ing when I found this vid.
Ellie taking my favorite Gizzard song and turning it into this... masterpiece.
