Day 23:A song from the 70's about friendship

Queen: You're my best friend

This was on my list. This is a John Deacon song, and he is my favorite member of Queen. And it is such a perfect song -- real, honest, pure, and for everybody. Brian's love songs can get skeevy. Freddie is bombastic and over the top, then over that. Roger...loves his car. But Deacy has a lovely and uncomplicated view - love is beautiful, no matter who or how you love. If you listen to the album through, it is this marvelous beacon of light and joy amidst drama -- just fucking wonderful.

Day 21: A song from a musical

I love musicals. Looooove them. Hard to pick. I decided to go obvious instead of niche. Hamilton is so fucking good and this is the best song in the show. Leslie Odom Jr. goddamnnnn.

I fucking blast this song and belt it out.

“I AM THE ONE THING IN LIFE I CAN CONTROOOOOOL
I AM INIMITABLE I AM AN ORIGINAAAAL
I’M NOT FALLING BEHIND OR RUNNING LAATE
I’M NOT STANDING STILL, I AM LYING IN WAAAAAAIT”

Leslie Odom Jr - Wait For It

(This video cuts off the first verse. It was posted in two parts.. must be a copyright thing but I wanted to post the live instead of the studio recording)

Day 21 - A song from a musical

This play gave me unrealistic expectations. Imagine my disappointment during Fleet Week when none of the Sailors broke into song 🤷‍♀️

Ain't Nothing Like a Dame-South Pacific
One of my favorite musicals. A very long time ago, I was fortunate enough to play Emile De Becque. Oh, some enchanted evening, indeed.

Day 23: A song from the 70s about friendship

I've technically used this song before, which infringes on my personal rules. But also technically, I was specifically talking about the live version, and the crowd singing it, and I am living in that technicality. And I am the only one who cares, so here we go.

Though never confirmed or denied, this song is about the love of Freddie Mercury's life, Mary Austin. She was his constant star. What they were specifically to each other was complicated. She had been his lover, an affair lasting seven years, but it was far more than that. In an interview, Freddie said, “all my lovers asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary, but it’s simply impossible. The only friend I’ve got is Mary and I don’t want anybody else. ... We believe in each other; that’s enough for me.”

"We believe in each other; that's good enough for me." To have someone believe in you, completely in you. That is friendship. That is love. That is life affirming. That is everything.

This is also a painful song, about a break in that relationship. But the singer is not just hopeful, he has absolute, rock solid faith that this is not how their song will end.

"You will remember
When this is blown over
And everything's all by the way
When I grow older
I will be there at your side to remind you
How I still love you"

It breaks my heart that Freddie was never able to hold to this promise.

This is an incredible song live, what it grew to be. But looking back at the original recording is just as heart swelling. It is a lovely, lovely song.
