Day 24: A song from the 80s about friendship

My favorite David Lee Roth song, with the incomparable Steve Vai on the 12-string guitar. Quiet, introspective, and honestly incredibly sweet.

"Man, we was happy
In our restless hearts
It was heaven Right here on earth
Yeah, we were laughin'
As we reached for the stars
And we had some
For what it was worth..."

"Damn Good," David Lee Roth (1988)

Day 24: a song from the 80's - Family

When my son was maybe.. 9.. he started playing burnout paradise on the Xbox. He loved hot wheels and marble runs. We'd watch YouTubers comparing toy cars (I wish I could find that man's channel again) on different tracks and we would make guesses on which colour marble would win a race down a wild track (another YouTuber who had a great positive impact on my son that I can no longer find). He built tracks for both and we'd adjust until we got them to do exactly what he wanted, I have potato phone video still saved somewhere deep in the cloud. We watched Okay Go videos and we made a few simple Rube Goldberg devices. Then he started playing Xbox and his favourite game was burnout paradise. He stopped playing with hot wheels and marbles soon after.

I was cautious with the music I played around my kids, maybe that was a disservice, idk. They grew up listening to music I felt was good for them (Not my whiny goth crap), that I hope taught them and nurtured creativity and humanity. Music that I felt was complex and nuanced but still at a level they could understand. Classical to modern artists playing lullabies and folk stories, a variety of cultures. I tried to give them words and sounds to describe the best parts of what I'd learned in my then 30 years.

To this day, he's now a teen, my son's favourite song is Paradise City by Guns N Roses. Why? I don't know. That song is the start of the game burnout paradise. Why is it core to him?

I have no moral lesson or reason for this story. This song for me means family. I don't care what the song is actually about or how awful it is or isn't. I don't even know all the lyrics- I refuse to dig into it.

So yeah.. my 80s choice for a song that relates to family.. a probably cheesy rock/metal song that will forever hold a deep place in my heart.

Day 22 Song from the 60s
Double Stop of Your Love by The Swinging Medallions
For whatever reason, this is STILL one of of my daughters favorite songs. I used to β€œtorture” her with my garage rock compilations, but she loved this one.

She’s 23 now and once in a while w send me a pic if it’s on in her car.

Day 24: a song from the 80's - theme (no) friends.

This song kind of sums up the early 80s for me. I had plenty of friends, but there was something about the Nihilistics that did it for me. They had a different attiditde and swagger that none of the other NYC hardcore bands had. And they were just different. They truly didn’t give a fuck. Their shows were always a whirlwind of fighting (with themselves or the audience) and drinking.

They were outsiders. From the Island. Even tho we were all outsiders, the Nihilistics were on a different wavelength.

I had been to CBGB Sunday hardcore matinees before with my sisters, but had never done it by myself. I followed my sisters lead: Took the bus from Clinton NJ to midtown; then the 1 train downtown and walked from the west side to the east side. I was nervous but determined. Had a great time! I still remember the bill. Letch Patrol, Antidote and the Nihilistics. Five bucks! Was winter of 1983 and I was 15.

I hav since become an optimistic nihilist.

RIP Mike Nicolosi.

Day 24: A song about Family from the 80s

Woo! This song's the reason I picked Family as my theme this week! I'm not gonna dive into the origins of swedish punk again, anybody who reads my posts (cough @SalaciousMonkey22 cough) has read it all before.

But seriously, come on. Saxophone punk?? I FUCKING LOVE IT!! The lyrics are pretty grim though, diving into poor dysfunctional family lives of the 80s. Failed heating, nothing to eat, parental neglect, et cetera...

Ebba GrΓΆn - Mamma Pappa Barn

(Mom, dad, child, the swedish name for the kids game Playing House)
