Day 22: 60s Friends
I’m making this fit somehow…

This song from the movie “Riot on Sunset Strip” has every 60 cheesy cliché. Hanging out with friends at the club, a fist fight on the dance floor, the fucking ace-est band of the 60s (the Chocolate Watchband) and hilariously dated dialogue.

“Your either cool or get out!”
“ this place is a drag, they got their own gestapo!”
Tells his gf; “make like a bird and fly away, birdie.”
And the end: “ what’s the scene?” “ hey, Donnie’s got a place figured out for a freak out! “A freak out?! Let’s go!”

It’s a movie that’s so bad that it’s great. The scene is a tiny slice of it… acid, cops, teenage disenfranchisement….

Day 21: A song from a musical

I love musicals, and could do a whole thread about them, so picking one is hard. I chose one for how well it was done considering the writer not only had never written one before, he learned to play guitar just to make this.

"Once More With Feeling" is one of the first, and absolutely one of the finest, musical episodes on television. (I went to the sing-a-long showings, before Fox got pissy and closed them all down.) All of the songs are sung by the cast, move the whole narrative of the season forward, work within the genre, and are incredibly well written. And it was Joss's first musical. Say what you will about the man --and I have-- he was a talented sonofabitch.

This song is complicated. It uses the entire cast (and Hinton Battle as the Big Bad! I love him), and is full of counterpoints, series-long leitmotifs, calls back to early songs in the episode, and even a joke about Allison Hannigan not wanting to sing (her only bit in the entire episode is "I think this line's mostly filler.") And Sarah really shines.

"I touch the fire and it freezes me
I look into it and it's black
Why can't I feel
My skin should crack and peel
I want the fire back."

That connects.

"Walk Through the Fire," Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Once More with Feeling."

(Joss also said the scene with the fire trucks racing behind the cast was the most perfect thing he ever shot.)
She was so damn sexy!!!

Day 21: A song from a musical

I love musicals. Looooove them. Hard to pick. I decided to go obvious instead of niche. Hamilton is so fucking good and this is the best song in the show. Leslie Odom Jr. goddamnnnn.

I fucking blast this song and belt it out.

“I AM THE ONE THING IN LIFE I CAN CONTROOOOOOL
I AM INIMITABLE I AM AN ORIGINAAAAL
I’M NOT FALLING BEHIND OR RUNNING LAATE
I’M NOT STANDING STILL, I AM LYING IN WAAAAAAIT”

Leslie Odom Jr - Wait For It

(This video cuts off the first verse. It was posted in two parts.. must be a copyright thing but I wanted to post the live instead of the studio recording)

Day 21: A song from a musical
As an ex-Navy squid, I think this covers it.

Day 21: A song from a musical

As the parent of a musical theater enthusiast, I have a great deal more options to choose from in my brain than I did five years ago even.

So I picked this one, from a relatively new musical that we saw performed locally not that long ago by a teen theater group that absolutely crushed it.

Day 22: A song from the 60's about friendship
Friends (1968) -- A little too obvious, but it definitely works.

"We've been friends now for so many years
We've been together through the good times and the tears"

If you aren't careful, it can kill you. But I've had it and survived. It reminds me of kale. 😁
Now I want to try pokeweed but I don't know how to get my hands on any.
