Every story I post gets 1 star’d

A simple question that's bothering me. What are the ethics behind sampling someones work here without permission? I get what you're all talking about but still.
Do you mean in a forum post or in a story?

The latter is a definite no-no, and I would be uncomfortable doing the former without approval.

Two samples were put in this thread above. Didn't sound like they were written by the OP, now we're debating the 'virtues' of the writing from an author who isn't even in the thread?

I think it'd be a crappy thing to do if the purpose was to dunk on an author who hadn't made themselves part of the conversation, but I think quoting a short passage (as here) for purposes of discussion, in a way that's not likely to direct unwelcome attention to the author, is fair enough for this kind of discussion.

No, definitely not. The passages are from different authors, posted within the last week.

As to the ethics of it, they've chosen to post their work in public with open ratings and open comments. I see no issue here.

Exactly...

There are literature classes, book clubs, and so forth all over the world reading and talking about stories. I've never once heard it suggested that it was rude to not ask an author's permission.
Sure, but I think it is rude, especially on a public platform like this.

I don't know @Writer61, but it's not necessarily outrage. I do know I wouldn't be happy if this happened to me, and that should be fine. Disagreeing on arguable things shouldn't be a problem. I know I'm not a good writer and definitely do not need other writers saying so.

I also regret bringing it up to begin with. Apologies.

Peace

But you allow comments on your stories. Fundamentally, what's the difference?

Grow up

There's enough childish fake outrage in the world, it's not necessary in AH.
I am not outraged, I simply have a different opinion. But, I am now pissed off by your stupid comment telling me to grow up.

And, if you can roll your eyes enough to see your arse, you should share that talent with the world. Or, was it just a stupid childish claim?

Fuck off

I think the difference is that an author can choose whether to allow comments and, if they do, delete those they don't like. They don't have those powers if their work is quoted here.
There. That. Perfectly stated. And like you, however others feel about it, I do disagree with it. And we've all seen how blood thirsty AH can be, it's not always nice and pleasant here.
