And like most other things, Jarts were perefectly safe when used as intended. Horseshoes could do a lot of damage too if they hit you in the wrong place, but only fools stood in their path.

Horseshoes are rough on the hands,I used to get huge gashes on the thumb and a couple other fingers until I got calluses.What also hurts is when you hit your leg when throwing one lol.
