What Are You Listening to Now 7.0

Ever like a song, the music, the tune, the melody of the vocals, but not the lyrics?

Great question. I find lyrics are the last focal point if ever for me. Back in the seventies and eighties I would often sing a long. Not so much any more. I love bands (Dream Theater, Nightwish, Teramaze, and Magenta to name a few) who release instrumental versions of their albums, and I almost always get them.

I usually don't mind the singing or the words but as you've pointed out, unnecessary repetition can get real annoying.

The song that prompted that was Spock's Beard -- She Is Everything.

Great tune, but the lyrics are too 'relationshippy'. It's not so much that I'd like a truly instrumental version, but I'd like one where an instrument replaces the vocal track.

Most of Chicago's tracks are the same way. Let another horn replace the vocal track.

All Jarreau, Michael Franks and a few others did what some call scat where the voice is more like an instrument --- making musical noises, but not singing lyrics.

I've got one track called Incoherent Blues and another called Mumbles by different jazz artists that do it also.

I've got quite a few tracks where the voice is so subdued, it almost seems like an afterthought ... you really have to listen for it.

I love jazz in all it's myriad forms - love it.

Now I love Neal Morse (original composer for Spock's Beard) but as an atheist his very, very Christian lyrics totally bounce off me. However, my favorite song is a Morse composition and I admit the words are incredibly powerful - "Stranger in Your Soul.". Two thirds through the song is a multi singer call response where the last word leads to a hominym first word of the next line. and then the ending. Brilliant.

Romeo and Juliet - Indigo Girls (Dire Straits cover; it's good but as you seem to, I prefer the Dire Straits original. Great song.)

Going back to the Split Enz now.

The Sounds. Swedish band. Haven't listened to anything new from them in the past 15 years, but now here I am. Crossing The Rubicon seems good, through five songs. Yeah, I'll listen to their later stuff, too.

[Edit: Oh dear, it's good. If you like powerful rock-y pop with good guitar and keyboard and femvox. Like me.]
