What Are You Nosey About Today?? 🦝

I'm curious about the movie I just watched. The Duff.
Designated Ugly Fat Friend (good movie btw)

It made me wonder if any of you had this within your group? Were you one? Did you feel like one?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-o-C21COWIQ
This isn't something I recognise in this form, but then I went to an all boys school.

But I suppose having a designated scapegoat is common in friendship and social groups of all kinds. I guess teenage boys just have different criteria from teenage girls in identifying who it's going to be.

I am curious on your take, and or position on the pandemic? What's happening In your location? Are you following guidelines if any? Or is the whole thing so 20 min ago?
I know this can be a hard topic to discuss for some, and people I am guessing have strong opinions on the matter. But what are you thinking about it?

I might not have been the prettiest or skinnier but I also didn't hang out with people who would have even fathomed the idea of a DUFF. People who think this way don't deserve friends.

Right?!

I wasn't a duff. I was slim and celebrated for my looks. But I would never have thought about my friends in that way, regardless of how they looked. Awful.

I have a lot to say about this.

I spent four years of my residency in the Army preparing for chemical, biological and nuclear warfare. I was one of the officers who spent a majority of their time in task forces tabletopping scenarios, including pandemic warfare and our response.

1. The previous administration did a horrific job reacting to this situation. It was obvious to many of us in the medical field in January 2020 that there was an endemic/pandemic risk. Knowing what I know about the previous administration's playbook, there were some critical judgement errors that caused America to be too slow to respond. There were factors out of our control that fucked us hard, like losing manufacturing centers in Wuhan and Lombardy. These regions supplied a huge amount of our PPE and testing disposables and because they were locked down we lost valuable time.
And our stockpile was not managed until we needed it and it was too late.

2. I am following guidelines very strictly. I am completely vaccinated. My children are not. I wear a KN95 mask on public. My children will not reenter society until three weeks after their final vaccination.

3. I am not as concerned about covid as I am about the fragility of our hospital systems. My reasoning for keeping my kids home is that there are zero pediatric beds available within 500 miles of where I live. We're reducing the risk of all disease for the moment, knowing that there are other kids who NEED those beds.

4. The misinformation and disinformation circulating is alarming. The lack of scientific literacy in this country needs to be discussed.

As my current favorite song goes:

The pandemic isn't over just because you're over it

I know this can be a hard topic to discuss for some, and people I am guessing have strong opinions on the matter. But what are you thinking about it?

In my location (Berlin), things are open but often require proof of vaccination and/or test (although not all - I went to a museum last weekend that only required people to wear FPP2/medical masks, but it also limited numbers). Most people follow guidelines to say, mask up on transport, although there's always one person who doesn't, or dick-noses their mask. My city state has 64.6% full vaccination. The country is lagging behind other EU nations in vaccinating children in the 12-17 range, and presently the plan is under 12s should start being vaccinated in the first quarter of 2022.

Yes, I am following guidelines, and I'll get my booster when it's offered. I may be vaccinated but not everyone is or can be (the few with genuine medical reasons they can't, and kids under 12). I've got zero patience for people who could be but choose not to be. Covid's still out there, it's still fucking people up.

Watching people complain about having to show proof of vax, or weirder still even wear a mask, is... absolutely wild to me. Fuck those people. Actually don't. No good things for them.

Broadly, things have been handled OK here. Not amazingly, but not awfully. However, there's a not insignificant group of querdenkers ('lateral-thinkers' who are anti-mask, anti-vax, were anti-lockdown, basically assholes) around.

Couldn't love this more.

And again

I suspect the whole DUFF thing probably happened, somewhere, to someone. Probably one of the writers or someone a writer knew. I don't think it was common at all. And I doubt they'd admit that it was the social milieu they grew up in and valued.

There are people who want to (and do) label other people and toss them into a box in one form or another. You see that tendency rise up here now and then (I'm thinking of the BDSM forum, which seems to have a lot of labeling and categorizing going on (also of course the GB and the Politics Board).

I didn't feel this as much in school, as I did in other areas of life. Job/even on here at times.
Not totally the Ugly Fat friend. So much as people wanting to get to know me to ask about my friends. (which maybe was a little about the UFF part. I was never really the designated person. I think lack of confidence helped put me there, or made me feel it.

I think the women on BDSM support each other more than any other place on the boards. Self labeling is different than being labeled by your “friends.”
Like PLP said, no. It wasn’t like that in my friend group.

I think it has been a good experience for you. But I remember years ago (and yes, I haven't been in a while) it was not so welcoming. That is why I asked you and Necro to answer a lot of my questions. (and eventually found more private ways to ask questions) There was a lot of eye rolls and virtual sighs for those with little to no knowledge.
I do think this happens all over the board though.

Fuck the pandemic.

I can’t even discuss this shit anymore it’s consumed my whole life.

Yeah I'm a little bitter. Not because I don't want to follow the rules (because I do, and have) but the level of care I've had this year because of it, has sucked ass.

It’s okay. Honestly it’s all I actually talk (bitch and moan) about. I’m just trying not to anymore. There is no point no one understands unless they’re in this thing here. Like I can’t understand how you’re all so free.

We were locked down for 18 months.
We know it. It's the hardest fucking thing in the world.

I've personally made peace with it because like you, it consumed me too.

Hang in there 🧡

Oooo exciting to see who I can add to ignore when they answer this one!

I have a kid, and since society as a whole has decided that kids don’t matter, in terms of keeping healthy or keeping in school, we follow very strict protocols. We don’t really do anything and my kid always wears a mask. Fewer (unvaccinated) kids are wearing them and it’s very frustrating. The kids do sports and go to different schools, so I try to keep him away. My entire life revolves around making sure my kid isn’t exposed to covid or even gets a cold because a cold means missing a week of school. Our kids are all so fucking screwed in terms of school and emotional well-being, school consistency is the one thing I can aim for to keep him (and us) sane. I am am so angry about the lack of concern for kids and working parents (let’s face it, mostly moms). I can’t believe this country is so full of ignorant garbage people. I mean, I can, but it’s just asinine.

In TX it's a motherfucking horrorshow. Our governor has basically decided this pandemic isn't a problem anymore. Yet numbers rise, and people are fucked. I'm vaxxed and getting my booster as soon as I can. Working from home and all that. I'm disgusted and horrified by the antivaxxers, anti-science idiots, and the Trump-cult. They're directly causing this nightmare to continue. My life plans got viciously fucked last year because these life-ruining cancer polyps couldn't stay home and wait this out, or perform the stupidly simple act of wearing a mask. I'm angry and bitter towards these motherfuckers. They have no critical thinking skills and they're actively doing everything they can to burn it all down. If they were on the Titanic they'd have set the lifeboats on fire and started jerking off. I hate this shit, and I'm doing everything I can to work through it safely and responsibly.

I am forever grateful that I left Texas when I did.

We had an academic conference scheduled for Austin next week. Every single respectable person in the field cancelled when the abortion ban passed. But watching businesses generally not GAF about women’s rights but do whatever marketing thing they could for BLM is just amazing. Intersectionality says what?

WTF is wrong with some people? Why don't they have the decency to make the smallest of sacrifices to help protect others? Freedom? Bullshit. Religious reasons? Bullshit. Too hard? BS!

I just got my third Pfizer shot and I'm still not going out without a mask, less for myself now than to be a good example for others. I'm in northern California where the rate of infection is among the lowest in the U.S. due largely to mask mandates. Our county just had its first pediatric covid death, the average age of other recent covid deaths has been under fifty.

My Trump-supporting father-in-law and brother-in-law went out to watch a football game at a bar and both came down with symptoms of Covid and immediately got themselves to a clinic for monoclonal antibody therapy. Now they're complaining about having to wait for a quarantine period before they can go out again. They now think they are invincible and that Covid is no big deal and have zero concern that they are part of the problem.

These two said everything I could say about my take on the pandemic... along with Aussiegeekygal's giant reminder that it's not over.

Right?!?

America does two things really well: sexism and racism. 🤷

I'm astounded how persuasive the counter narrative for universal healthcare, subsidized childcare and social infrastructure is. Somehow the population has decided that corporate profit is more important than collective good. And as someone who grew up elsewhere: I don't get it. Life is so much better when those around you aren't competing for resources. When those around you are healthy and don't have to carry the stress of financial ruin they tend to treat you better. I feel like America is a race to the bottom sometimes.

I do hope this past year and a half has opened more American eyes to the gross injustice and inequity that exists in this country. It's disgusting that the richest country in the world can have such systemic poverty. (And that's probably why the country is so freaking rich...)

It's time to do better and be better.

I'm nosey about things you try to do yourself but really need two to do right.

Sexual or otherwise. Have you tried smacking your own butt with a wooden spoon? Tried to build the IKEA wardrobe yourself and found yourself holding a ton and a half of chipboard and needing a third hand to reach the bolts (J) and locking nuts (Q)?
