Most memorable negative story comment you've received

"I gave it 4 stars due to the cool illustrations but the story is not great, poorly written and totally unrealistic."

Sounds like a good description of my bad writing

I'd read that you got Stacnashed, and got savaged. She was one of the strangest uninvited critics, if not the strangest, to wander through the AH.

One of my Ruby and Adam stories got a Nashcritique too, an 78/100 what's more. Her quibbles were odd - half a dozen "cunts" and you'd think I'd set fire to the American flag, but several dozen asses, not a problem. I think she dug anal sex.

I still don't know who she thought she was, ranking us on her NashHundred meter, however the fuck that worked. Odd.

This one was fairly odd. I'm not sure that it was even necessarily a piece of negative feedback about the story - it reads more like a rather abstract exclamation...

"fucking fuck"

A review I received on another site
"Why did you waste 5 minutes of your time writing this drivel for me to waste 4 hours of mine reading it"

Either I'm a really fast writer or they read really really slowly 🐌 🤷

The HORRIBLE ... HORRIBLE... HORRIBLE... 5 stars above really make me laugh.

This was the first comment I got on my first story ever. I think it was harsh, because it never explained what was wrong.

What a miserable story. Have an urge to vomit. 1* of course.

I cannot remember the precise details, but let's say my story was in BDSM. One comment was something along the lines of: Great plot, good characters, wonderful descriptions, but I don't like BDSM, so only a 3.

Um, okay? :unsure:

Mind you, I do enjoy getting complaints about a story 'lacking detail' when it clearly starts out with "This is my entry for the 750-word contest..."

They are deleted now, but I got a pair of comments from a fellow vet about my open-marriage military couple story that was posted in LW. Apparently the thought of a wife fucking other men while her husbands was deployed, triggered him big time. I can understand his viewpoint but he really got vicious.

Yup. The amazing thing is that somebody spent hours reading something they really hated. 😫

My favorite negative comment was posted on the third story in a 47k-word trilogy:

comment.png

I like to imagine this is how that comment came to be:

<Commenter reads part 1>
"Ugh! Banal and pretentious. Now, where's part 2?"
<13k words later>
"Yuck, still so banal and pretentious! Can't believe I wasted my ... oh, look. Part 3."
<21k words later>
"Fuck me! Is this even MORE banal and pretentious? Better read them all again to be sure."

Two come to mind for different reasons.

For The Gauntlet: “What the hell is this disgusting crap?” Love this one because like others have mentioned it gives no explanation.

For one of my The Collector stories: “I loved all the sex scenes and hated the story, mainly because I hate him. No point reading any further for me, it's almost like a collection of sex scenes with no real development.”

I remember this one because it’s legitimate feedback. The main character isn’t a good person overall. It reminded me that readers may be turned off by an unlikable character even if their motivations are solidly established.

But sometimes you get an awful character and you can't stop yourself reading anyway. Inquisitor Glokta in Joe Abercrombie's "The Blade Itself", and Jorg Ancrath in Mark Lawrence's "Broken Empire" series, for example. Those are gold.

Like many others here, I don't delete negative feedback/comments unless they are just threatening/insulting me personally. I got one a day or so after one of my stories had posted that read, "Rubbish. Belongs in The Beano." The story in question was my first foray into the I/T category, and while I'm not British, I'm reasonably certain that this isn't the type of thing one would see Dennis the Menace and Gnasher confront.

Though please correct me if lesbian incest is a regular feature of The Beano, so I can get a subscription. :)

I left it up because it made me laugh (and because several other commenters fired back at the anon who left it, which is always a nice feeling). Several years later, someone must have reported it because it vanished without a trace. Nevertheless, I remember it well. :)

So, one comment that comes to mind was, "Garbage."

Another was, "You're one fucked up bitch."

I don’t go near Omenainen’s feedback thread anymore. No disrespect. They work hard and sometimes even seem to mean well.

But they snapped at me back when I was still new. Yes, I deserved it. But that shit felt like it bled for days, and left a stink that took weeks to air out of my mind. I do not tread there anymore. Where I go now is to myself for feedback. He’s a bully, too, but he believes in me a little.

I thank Omen and Awk, though. Sincerely. They wanted better of me, and gave me a crystal clear direction to get started improving in. It hurts to feel dumb, but I’ll be gol’ danged if my shit don’t stink so bad no more.

I had posted an NC lesbian story in the Lesbian section.

One of the readers gave a review that was specific in what they didn't like, including the usual grammar-Nazi stuff, but seemed the most upset by how the story ended and I got the sense that she was really rattled by it.

In hindsight, I probably should have posted it as a lesbian story in the Non-Consensual/Reluctance category instead.

Then the flak would have been coming from the anti-NC crowd.

The moral is that you cannot please everybody, so go ahead and please yourself.
