Say Something

Thank you to everyone for your kindness about my Spanish and my Dutch.

And thank you, too, to everyone who's already participated and to everyone who's going to in the near future :)

See, that's what I should have done too or at least think of exactly what to say. Now you're stuck with lots of "uh"-ing and "um"-ing and some very, very bad, very slow Spanish. I couldn't even manage more than two sentences. To my defence, it's been close to 6 years since I last spoke Spanish, but I still do manage to write it and understand it pretty well.

This is really scary for some reason, so no stupid comments, please. And yes, I'm more than aware of the mistakes, both in grammar and pronunciation.

Oh, these are wonderful! Thank you so much! Your Spanish is fine, by the way. I sound a lot worse than that if I'm improvising off the top of my head. I kinda cheated with mine. :p

And you're right, your voice is definitely highest in Polish!

Also, I'm a little surprised by how much of the Swedish one I could...well, not understand, but get the gist of, maybe? More so than the German one, even. Who knew Dutch would make Swedish (sorta) comprehensible?

Anyway, as always, you sound lovely, and I'm in awe of your ability to language. :rose:

This is Gianbattista, ciao a tutti. We haven't played this back yet, I hope it is ok.

Not quite sure how to post this link, here's hoping one of these works, Elle wants to do another one in English.

Edit: this is Elle,....I am obviously very calm....my speaking voice is rarely so low, because it gets higher with excitement or nervousness. You know......the kind of things I am most of the time, :D

Gah, G. and Elle, y'all sound adorable. I was sitting there the whole time thinking "I wish I knew more Italian, so I could catch more than a word or two here and there" because...GAH. SO CUTE.

I liked hearing Elle in English, too. You sound wonderful! And singing with the dogs was nice as well! :rose:

So, yeah, thanks again to everybody who's participating! I hope some more of you can post, too. English, other languages, doesn't matter. :)

I LOVE EVERYONE IN THIS BAR, OK?

Thanks Elle and G for joining! It's so great to hear everybody's voices. :)

I think one reason why my Swedish is easier for you to understand is that I speak it much slower than I speak German. I feel comfortable speaking German, whereas I feel very uncomfortable speaking Swedish. I've practically never spoken any considerable amount of Swedish, so it feels "wrong" in my mouth. I also speak Finnish Swedish (with a Finnish accent on top), that's often a little easier for foreigners to understand than Swedish Swedish. Finnish Swedish and Swedish Swedish sound very different.

German is and probably always will be the language that I feel the most comfortable speaking. My English is better than my German, no doubt about that, but German sounds fit me better and I feel a lot less self conscious speaking German than speaking English, phonetically I mean.

Yep, that's probably it. I have a hard time comprehending what's being spoken, even in languages I do understand (English aside, obvs). So the slower rate of speech definitely helped because I got a good bit of the Swedish and understood all the Spanish (which never happens). See? You don't speak them badly at all. You were just trying to do me a favor. ;)

Still, the next time I decide to try to add another one, which I hope will not be for quite some time, I may go with Swedish. :D

I thought the singing would get people laughing .....you both have been incredibly calm about it!

Noooo, it was adorable! Giggling because it's so cute, yes. But definitely not genuine laughing material. :)

Yes, go with Swedish. Swedish really is one of the easiest languages to learn. My opinion may be a little biased because I've grown up hearing and seeing Swedish regularly, but certainly not enough to make me learn it, but I think for an English speaker it should be really simple to pick up. There's lots of overlap in the vocabulary, the grammar is simple and it's fairly regular.

Recently I ran into someone saying the writing to pronunciation is very unintuitive in Swedish, but I've never thought so. It's certainly not any more unintuitive than English or French. Another thing an English speaking learner has commented on is that using the definite article is odd, because it's placed at the end of the word, "en bil (a car), bilen (the car), bilar (cars), bilarna (the cars)", but from my point of view that's not any stranger than the idea of even needing a definite article in the first place. :p

See, I'm doing this again. Trying to lure people into learning obscure languages they'll probably never need.

Thank you!

And I really enjoyed all the recordings. The cat looked strangely at me when I listened to the dog song though.

We use to joke here that if you know som Swedish, som German and some English, you only need to add a bad cough to speak Dutch. :D

Joke aside, I did understand your Dutch pretty well.

That is a 100% accurate description of the Dutch language. If you don't sound like you have a really bad case of post-nasal drip, you're apparently doing it wrong. :p

Joke aside, I did understand your Dutch pretty well.

And I got some of your Swedish, too!
