Valentines Day Contest Support Thread.

Under different categories give you different results, I have a unique insight until that. On Monday the first two stories on the site were “Our Special Night” by Dalton402 and my story “Slingshot”.

Because of an error, the text of my story was published under “Our Special Night”. Dalton402 was credited as the author and linked to his stories. And it was posted under “Loving Wives” whereas “Slingshot” was under Sci-fi/Fantasy. It was just duplicated text. It stayed this was for approximately 12 hours when the incorrect version of “Our Special Night” was removed. It’s since been reposted with the correct text.

But while it was live, here are the numbers for the exact same story.

Views (approx)
OSN - 25,000
Slingshot - 2500

Comments
OSN - 38
Slingshot - 9
(Note: many of the comments were wondering about the duplicated story and why it was in Loving Wives. But they mostly posted those questions on OSN)

Rating
OSN - 4.73
Slingshot - 4.93

So if you want lots of page reads and comments, Loving Wives is the way to go. But the readers will come down harder on ratings. Also, unbeknownst to me, Sci-fi/fantasy is not one of the more popular categories. Ooops

One last thing. A number of people told me they never would have read Slingshot if it hadn’t been accidentally posted in Loving Wives, but they’re glad they did because they liked it. So that’s cool….

I'm telling you, I was totally gobsmacked. He cited William Shatner's long-forgotten literary masterpiece TekWar, too.

I began to wonder what he thought he'd clicked on.
I was interested, then I saw the TekWar reference and now I need to read it. Which story?

Nevermind, found it.

Submitted. I was beginning to worry I'd have to hold it for next year!

Just submitted my second entry...a gay prison romance... something very different for me! Had a really great time writing it! 💘

My story is racking up the Views, 9.8k so far, but hasn't had a vote in the last 4 days - when it had a couple swept then two new ones (making 20). It's no longer marked New. I'm guessing the GM readers aren't searching for Valentine's stuff, and the Valentine's readers aren't reading GM.

C'est la vie.

As it's quite, mine has hit 14.6 k and gaining about 800 a day, but 4.42 at 145 votes it's not going to be hot, let alone get any prizes. But nice anyway.

Hi MellisaBaby. (I did see you had publised on my My Home page)
Out of educational interest, what did they bounce it on? (BTW it is showing on their list of entries! Entries)
My original was on the basis that it was part of a series, so I editied it down and changed the names to confuse the innocent. But the full version will see the light of day sometime. However, I was surprised to see another one which was part six or a series!

It was not bounced, it will be included in the contest list, but I am not eligible to win a prize because I won the Christmas contest. Lit rules are that you can’t win two in a row.

MellisaBaby, thanks for the clarification... not a problem I am likely to encounter, or winning.

Nice story. I encourage everyone to read it.

Finally published Seward Valentine Trifecta after adding it to my idea list for the 2021 Valentine contest. 8-D.
It was nice to see a bunch of Favorited entries when I went to check if it had been published. The funny math is, 14 favorites, but a score of 3.38 on 16 votes.
Stranger though, is that even though I saw votes and scores on my Works list, I don't see any on the actual story. Ah, the mysteries.

Sams, seems to show now. I have noticed that a story needs to have been published for a day before the story list, viewable by everyone updates from (x.xx) to (3.38).

From a very long negative review of my VD story Holly’s Secret: “I will dock 1 point for those issues, and 1 more point because I genuinely hate Valentine's day (ironically, unlike the MC, for no particular traumatic reason - I just hate the idea), 3 stars in the end.”

I won’t debate the other issues as he has a right to his opinions (obviously male from the various comments), but why read a story if you know you hate the underlying theme?

I know it's very late, but a few days ago I started working on an entry, and I just wanted to clarify: to get it on the list of entrants it just has to be submitted before February 7 11:59 PM, right? If it doesn't go live for a few days after that, it doesn't matter as far as getting added to the big list?

I wouldn't be sure as they warn that submissions can take 72 hours to go live. Now that might be because you will lose voting time, but I think it is because the 'list of entries' is closed on 7th Feb. I wouldn't risk it and save it for next year. Note:- I reserve the right to be (proved) wrong.

In the past, I've submitted with minutes to spare and the stories always made it into the contests. If your story is ready to go on time, I would go ahead and submit it. Unless you're hoping for more views, then maybe you should save it for next year. But if it does well, the number of views doesn't really matter.

Hi all -- I just submitted my first story! It's for the Valentine's Day contest. Submitted later than I'd wanted, I hope it gets the required views and votes in time.
